I got an unusual Cirrhilabrus last night and it is shown here. It has a distinctly shaped dorsal fin that cannot be seen in any other species in the genus. Also it has broad, longer and black pelvic fins. It was once shown as C. joanallenae in Kuiter, 2002 but we cannot see its dorsal fin there.

Jacky showed the same 'species' some time ago and now I am sure that it is a new one. Its size is some 75mm.

Tanaka san,
Dave Palmer of PAF Los Angeles had a specimen a couple of months back.
Another specimen showed in Hong Kong last days of December.

Thanks for the info.

Could you know the locality of capture ?

I just received an email from the Cirrhilabrus expert, Jack Randall and he said that it is a new species.

I tried to take more but it rarely spreads dorsal fin.

The friend-owner of the shop in Miyazaki informed me that it has been collected in Java or Bali.

Many thanks, joetbs.

I received a message from the importer in Himeji, Japan, that it has been shipped from Bali. Perhaps it was once transported to Bali, but I do not know the correct location. Or several specimens from a certain area have been shipped to various exporters in Indonesia.

Also I hope to know the depth range.

Another male would arrive here tomorrow.

I got the second male, some 70mm long.

It was also from Indonesian waters, but any other data in detail is yet to be available. Its dorsal fin is quite similar to that I got before and I am sure that it is a new species.

It is rather aggressive and very active now, swimming around the rocks and going up for foods while I am feeding the fishes. When it is threatened by other Cirrhilabrus or larger fish it spreads all the fins and the tail turns blue against the 'enemy'.

"We" decided to describe it as a new species and I should kill these rare beauties soon for examination. Now I am trying to take photos as many as possible.

Thanks. Yes, its dorsal fin is quite distinct.

Here is the shot of today. They ignore each other but sometimes chase other Cirrhilabrus for a short shole.

It seems closer to joanallenae rather than rubriventralis.

Here are some today's shots.

1 Genicanthus lamarck, 55mm. It does very well, and grew to this stage from 40mm long (last December).

2 G. bellus, juv. 40mm. It eats well, although I got it yesterday.

3 Cirrhilabrus species, male, some 70mm from Indonesia. An aggressive eater. The accurate locality is yet to be known.
