Check this out, a few growing in a patch of zoas. has the same base structure as a zoa, but not connected to the rest of the colony. And doesn't seem to be bothering "stinging" the zoa's around it, so figure it is some sort of paly.

I personally would run the quiet one in the sump, they are not really designed for external use. They actually run cooler in the water. Also, why not drop the skimmer into the sump? Get it out of site!
