The NY public aquarium in Coney Island is mediocre at best, but might be worth your while simply because it is in Coney Island. If you have access to a car and can afford pretty much a full day, the @2 hour trip out to Atlantis Marine World on Long Island is well worth it. The 20,000g. captive reef exhibit is the equal ( and arguably better) of any live coral display in the country. The rest of the aquarium is very nice too.

If you ask nicely, many of our members will invite you to see their systems and that is well worth it IMO.

atlantis does look pretty nice, but we weren't planning on renting a car, and I'm not sure I can convince the wife to give up a day.

Are there any nice saltwater shops that I can get to via the subway system?

Thanks for the tours link too, those are cheaper than i expected.

Have you been to NYC before?

If not, some good things that are all within walking distance down town are:

Federal Hall Week Days only
Wall Street
The Staten Island Ferry
WTC site
Lunch on Stone Street
Lunch at the South Street Sea Port (go to a side street for better restaurants)
Governers Island (not sure if this is still open but the prison is kind of cool)
Statue of Liberty ferry landing and tickets
Circle line ferry tour landing

Hope that is helpful,
Leslie

Reef related.

Greenwich Aquaria

is an absolute must see for the avid hobbiest. Jason, Rob, and Joe are always there and love to chat. Its a bit of a haul out there but then you could say you went to Greenwich, CT one of the richest neighborhoods in America. Seriously though Jason's display tank is worth the visit; its truely unique.

Sorry but I don't see the WTC site ad being a good thing to see. It's not a tourist attraction.

I guess the concept of crossing state boundaries is pretty normal over there. I've seen pictures of that store on Marshreef before. That's one nice store.

But I was wondering if there was anything within walking distance of midtown manhattan, etc.

Sorry Chief,

I did hesitate before adding it. As I live a few blocks away, I used to get annoyed or angry when tourists asked where it was and how to get there. Now, I try to understand that this was an event that rocked the entire nation, and people treat it almost as a pilgrimage. For people who are not from here, it is a way to connect with something they anguished over from far away.

That's all I have to say.

Back to topic.

avoid the touristy stuff and get to know the newyork people that live here love.

Google "DIP and Midtown"

I was recommended this place. It's a high end restuarant that specialized in fondoos (i think i spelled that right)

About 15 bucks a person and u can get a romantic dinner for two.

New World is also pretty close (walking distance) to the Empire State Building. Going up is a touristy thing worth doing. I second going out to Pratt (Brooklyn) and seeing Randy's tanks. Plus I'm sure you can find a good restaurant near there.

If it is in Midtown, you could take a trip to New World (the aquarium store) on the way! It is between 2nd and 3rd avenues.
