Rich.

That 3ft of line before hte pump will defiantly cut flow big time.

Wanna try drilling a hole in your skimmer box and make this thing a recirculating beckett?

Pierce, if I have to removed the sump and redrill it...I'm getting that new skimmer ;)

Ok, so I emailed Andy and threw a big stink!!! Long story short, I am getting a new style injector free of charge. I will still have to upgrade pumps for peak performance....

I did find one major, but easy to fix problem with my sump. My Micron bag was getting sucked into my skimmer intake bulkhead. There were so many bubbles in that chamber that I didn't notice it before. I sectioned off the bulkhead with a few pieces of live rock and the skimmer seems to be producing a better foam so far.

Pierce, I am not quite ready to drop the cash on a Deltec, but when I am I'll take a ride with you over to Pat's shop. If you want to check out his store, he's pretty close to me. LMK we'll meet up.

Thanks BC!

Came home tonight, skimmer flooded my stand, my GRI pump was submerged in water, GFCI tripped.
Thank God Pierce told me to silicone the insde of the stand or I would have flodded the neighbors below me.

The GRI pump is fried. I'm ready to take a sledge hammer to the MRC.....This is very frustrating

Rich, how did this happen? I have always thought of that question.. What happen if the skimmer over filled and you draining the sump... That is frustrating indeed. I had to redo my drain pipe today because it was leaking.. :(

Well, after all the hassle I should be back up and running tonight ;) and I made some changes to make sure this will NEVER happen again. I guess you just have to learn the hard way :D

EDIT....Now my Pan world skimmer pump is tripping my GFI....I guess the water got inside there as well. Does anyone know if Premium Aquatics or Champion lighting will replace the pumps since they are less than 1 month old?

I hope so or this is a $500 setback :(

Rich

If PA or CL doesn't take them back the pump probably has a manufactor warranty. If your going to go that route just check it and see if it covers water damage. If it doesn't let it dry out and then return it to them, telling them it just all of sudden doesn't work anymore. Play dumb about the water as they mayn't honor the warranty.

Rich,

I don't think they will take them back if they know you soaked them in water. Won't hurt to ask but don't try to open up the pump before you call them(if you think you can get away with it).

I am pretty sure I can fix them if the capacitor is not fried, most likely is just the residual water inside the armature and brush that is causing the GFI to trip. I fixed electric motors for a few month as my first job at Pan Am:), it is becoming handy now. I will be at NERAC most of the day but should be home by 5 pm if you want to bring them over. I also have a few spare Iwaki and mak 4?s if you need pumps for a while until you get these fixed.

I was just telling Warren I like to smash the MRC skimmer with a hammer after I get a new skimmer. I will be posting pictures of that on RC for everyone to see my OPINION of Andy?s work.

Pierce, I want in on those pics!!! I picture a scene like from the movie Office Space where they're kicking the crap out of a printer (only with an MRC :D )

If they wont take back these pumps I'll gladly bring them over. I have to show you what I did to the GRI pump :(

Sad too hear about what happened especially when you had everything set up properly. Your waste collector should have shut down the skimmer.

I hope you could get things up and running with out any extra costs.

If I could help out in anyway just let me know.

Rich, don't spend any money on a new skimmer.
After we have the DIY nights someone should be able to make you the mac daddy skimmer.

then we can kick the crap out of your old one and send the company the pieces.
that scene in office space is crazy, by the end of it I feel bad for that copier.

Well I figured out what happened to you Rich....

I was studying for a test and fell asleep when I heard the tank hissing and gurgling 45 minutes later. I looked at the collection cup and it was full and the skimmer had shut down like it was supposed to ....

I stepped onto the floor and guess what happened!! I was standing in the middle of a puddle. I noticed that the sump water level was also low and the return pump was sucking in air and that was the sound that awakened me. The sump was drained by at least 4 gallons of water.

Ok ok.. Here's what happened. When the collection cup was full and pressurised the skimmer so that the air doesn't enter, the water was forced up and out of the "T" that relieves the back pressure when the skimmer is working. Hence the flaw in both of our plumbing designs.. ;)

I looked at the collection cup and the floor was dry where it was and worked perfectly. I never had the "T relief" on the skimmer before and so it never had any place to drain out to. Remember that the water follows the path of least resistance. I checked the "T" and the water was coming out from there.

Hence the problem is now solved. I am going to cap my "T" and lose the problem.

Rich, give me a call today. I will let you know how it looks to have a pool under your bed at 4:30am and have to get up at 8am after studying and watching your kid all day long. My eyes are stop lights right now.
