Sean:
Actually, I am going for a wild, jungle like look in this tank. It was an established tank with all plastic plants for the longest time, and I neglected it(but not the fish) while I was setting up and improving my SW tanks. I started putting plants in and replacing the plastic a little at a time, then yesterday did a re-scape. There are some things in there that don't show up in the pics, small cuttings, etc. When it grows in it will look a lot better. Now I'm eyeing my 46 bow for my next project, I'll probably combine the corals in that one with the nano in a new tank, maybe 30g cube.
THEN I'll do a complete artistic layout. Just think of all the cuttings I'll have with this tank!

Maybe it looks like there's enough interest here to create another forum/lounge for freshwater plantings just among our members. :groupflip

um, that probably won't happen, but you can moderate a fresh water thread if you want :) APC seems to have the plant thing covered, that's a big site.

i started a forum back in last summer that has sort of died off but anyone who's interested in reviving it, for freshwater interest or whatever, as it covers all sorts of discussions including salt, fresh, ponds, reptiles, everything, just PM me and you can be a moderator or whatever.

It's good that you have a plan.
I'm going through the same thing with the discus tank at the shop just sitting waiting for plants to grow. But it's better then waiting for corals to grow.

Yeah Sean. I was at your shop yesterday for some of the plants! And some nice harlequin rasboras.
I'm trying to figure out what kind of moss to use to cover my branches with other than Java moss. That spreads out more than I want, and I have it elsewhere in the tank. I need something that will spread along the branches yet stay compact. Any ideas?

riccia or if you want I could sell you some of the moss I have in my display tank. Riccia is a little tricky to get to stay underwater but you could always give it a try.

Nice tank, Ming! You said "was" ?

Yup, "was" because I have since taken it down when I moved. It was a 29 gallon tank. Now I upgraded to a 75 gallon planted tank but its currently low light and no co2 so its not really doing much. I've been too busy and lazy to upgrade the lights and add co2 so far. But it'll come within time.

Ok, I picked up some Riccia moss tonight from Sean. I did a little tweaking with the plantings, and then I tied the riccia and java mosses on to the stick branches, using thread in a spiral pattern.
Pics of my progress:

Here it is after I placed it in the tank. You may be able to see the threads now, but as it grows in they'll dissappear. I had some left over riccia, and it's floating on the surface. A little bit of the moss came loose, and joined the pile. As I understand it, the riccia is fast-growing, and expensive too. So, the clump on the surface should grow like Chaeto. Good for later placement!

Yeah, Riccia is a fast grower and expensive (i dont know why cause it grows so fast) but my only thing against riccia is that it doesn't root. After they grow too big, the part underneath starts to die cause lack of light. And then you have the whole thing just break off and float to the top because the bottom part which is tied to the wood died. I had my fun with riccia, but its too much maintainance to look pretty.
