Freshwater tanks should be beautiful not some empty tanks full of fish. A really beautiful planted aquarium actually takes more maintenance and required more attention then a reef tank.

Gmandese your tank looks good but try and stay focused on some kind of vision in your head the tank looks very scattered. What I'm trying to say is you have a little of this and a little of that in the tank I don't see the design or vision(unless that?s your vision).

African Cichlid tanks can also become beautiful planted aquariums your just a little limited on the planted selection. Not too many people do this due to either lack of imagination or not being exposed to it.

Too many people don't see how beautiful a FW tank should be. It's easy to make a saltwater tank nice just put a fish in a tank and people will oohh and aahhh. But I think or at lease hope the MR members are more worldly with there research and visions.

Just my 2cents

Some freshwater planted aquariums

Just looked through this thread and it is good to see that the freshwater is getting a little attention. Here are a few pictures from Germany and Italy from a recent trip. These are all taken in Elos Aquastudios except one that was taken at Interzoo 2004.

Ok, I did some re-scaping today. Mind you, the plants and leaves have to grow in and orient towards the light, but I think this should work out nicely.
Of course it's not on the same level as some of those awesome tanks, but it's a start!

The tank looks even better than before!

Also you beat to it when you show them the pics of the light. I am trying to get the 175W PC light from him with 2 x $9 bulbs!!! :joke:

Just take notice that some old strip light does not have the space for regular flourescent blubs. You may need less common tubular size ones.

Hey guys, I am going to start a freshwater planted tank (55 gallons) in a few weeks. For all you freshwater guys out there, what kind of lighiting (money is not an issue) should I go with for these plants? I want the same effect as all those pics, lol.

Jawwad, take a look at the links posted they have all the info.

but if your lazy, like me, then what I read was you do not need as much lighting as a reef tank. you can use NO, VHO, or PC lights. There does not seem to be a set rule for freshwater tanks. 3-4 watts per gallon was mentioned as good lighting. What is more important than the light is the substrate and getting the plants enough CO2. For that your going to have to read the articles ;)

i don't happen to bother with freshwater plants indoors since i've got tons outside. the lilies, anacharis, mermaid, bacopa, umbrella plant, water hyacinth all grow like crazy all summer long. the only thing i bring indoors is the umbrella and hyacinth. everything else seems to survive the chaotic ny winter. they just grow like weeds, so i couldn't possibly justify running lights for and trimming and providing co2 and fertilizer for growth of other species of "weeds" indoors in my case. gotta take some pics this spring and summer. planted tank imo is 1 more tank to slave after. also i don't bother with live plants in my cichlid tank at all since they plow through everything when im not looking, even tough species and a coarse substrate. heck, they even turn over rocks! little monsters.

those elos tanks look serene. whats in the bottles in the background, and do they have displays in the usa?

one thing i adore are madagascar lace plants. i could picture setting up a tank just to grow some of those. but they need a dormant season and all.

I agree, that 2nd tank pictured is well done, thanks for the pics elos :)

By the way I love the design of the stores, it looks like a salon with aquariums in it,

nice and clean, great packaging, no plug intended :P

it would be awesome to have a nice big reef tank and a nice big planted FW tank sitting across from one another- I love those schools of tetras hiding all through the grass in the FW tanks!

I read a book a while back on planted FW tanks- There was a lot of effort going into getting that look. They recommended tying with black thread moss to the branches in the water to get that natural look, etc. I love that zen look too- its really relaxing...
