Ok, I did some re-scaping today. Mind you, the plants and leaves have to grow in and orient towards the light, but I think this should work out nicely.
Of course it's not on the same level as some of those awesome tanks, but it's a start!

Beautiful FW setup. I've been neglecting my FW tank for years and was just about to get rid of it! It's been up longer than my reef, I actually have a fish that is 15 years old! (pleko).

Maybe I should throw some plants in it.

not much Kris I just read an intro guide on the APC site. the plants don't need too much light, they need CO2, and some nutrients. you could get away with 3 watts / gallon according to the article. YOu can always do more, but simple is easier.

Also the plants become your filter, they suck up the ammonia and nitrates.
they also produce O2, once you add enough CO2.

J, I had a planted tank before. I was looking for the pics I had of it with no luck. It's was a 10g that was heavily planted, not exactly a work of art but it was nice to mess with :D. My sis has the comp with the pictures on it so maybe I can get her to hook it up and email me all those pictures.

I think I'm gonna turn the tank in the kitchen into a mini planted tank, starting in march. Gives me some time to do some homework. That's just one more way to keep my hand out of the reef :D

Kris, just get a cheap incandescent double bulb strip light, and get 2 twisty compact fluorescent bulbs! They come in 13w, 18w, and 25w. That's up to 50w on a 10g for pretty cheap. Although in this pic I have 2 13w bulbs, on another tank and that should be enough.

they still make those???? the funny thing is when they did have only those incandescent hoods, it was so hard to find the flourescent bulbs, now they are 99 cents for flourescent bulbs :(
