Not to take sides here, but the rules should be pretty easy to follow, they aren't asking for much. If I understand correctly, since these events are being planned on the site, they are in essence, a function of this group and whether intended to be or not, are affiliated with MR. Which means, they fall under MR guidelines for conduct and if there appears to be a violation of some bylaw or rule, than the thread gets deleted to eliminate any affiliation.
Josh, isn't banning the meets, or not letting them go on. You just can't post about it unless it falls within the above mentioned guidelines, which shouldn't be hard to do.
Also, Rick, if you need an accomplice, I know how to keep my mouth shut and I'll give you a discount on my services :shhh:.

Enough with the "snitch" and "hater" comments. Please keep this thread on topic and useful.
Like I said before, everyone likes get togethers, we are not trying to discourage them. Anyone that has ever been to a meet at my place knows I don't let fellow reefers leave without taking some free frags with them. That is what the site is here for.
But there is a right way to do things and we are going to figure it out, same as we did with the marketplace, group buys, etc. We put some basic rules out there that we thought would work but clearly they did not cover all the bases. We're working on it now and will have the full rules out soon for review.

Events like these meet and greets are great. A few problems I have with them are making sure your speakers know what they are talking about(not saying any of the previous speakers don't at all), vendors taking these as their own private sales, people thinking that these are MR sponsored events, people making money off our members by charging admission, membership dues and having auctions. MR was built on things like this. Hey the original swaps were almost exactly like this. I donate my time, money, and alot of dedication to this site as do many of you and I don't want to see this community hurt by things that are out of our (all of the members) control.

The Westchester Meet N Greet did not have anything to do with the Qns & LI Meet N Greet and should no way shape or form be frowned upon. I'm glad they are doing there own thing and you should all be looking into doing things that are productive for one another. So attend there function aswell if you have a chance!

In light of what Josh has announced on this thread, it might be more productive if suggestions were made here about what type of events YOU - the members - would like to see organized here on Manhattan Reefs?
Obviously we have our 2 huge swaps per year and that will continue
We (MR) would also like to organize an additional couple of events per year to get our members together. These can be purely fun events - like an MR bowling night (during leagues off season), or a swap only event where different levels of reefers can swap corals with each other in a pre-arranged fashion (we know you don't necessarily want a kenya tree in exchange for a Purple Hornet) and sit around and talk and maybe knock back a few :beer:'s- we can provide places in most of the 5 Boroughs LI & around our area for these to happen !!
If it is more about the corals for you, maybe we can arrange for a different vendor each month to head up a Group Buy and offer something at a really good price to ALL of our members. Perhaps that vendor might provide arrange for pick-up at a place you can hang out with fellow reefers for a while? Does that type of thing interest you?
Nothing to say the Group Buy need be for corals either - it could be equipment too!
While we are working on the rules for events that YOU might want to organize - time would be best spent on hearing what you want..or you can tell us you are happy with the way things are and content to be sitting at home in your skivvies and typing away on your computer, saving your money for our new big swap in April
Be patient with us on the rules to come. The current congress has nothing on us when it comes to pounding out details. We work very hard to come up with rules that are easy to deal with for all of our members, but at the same time ones that do no harm to our community!

I like the site and met some great people who are to me no longer just reefers but friends. I do also agree with OzoneParkGuy with "Matter of fact T/Y Josh for creating this Site because without MR these past events could never have even taken place. I've met alot of wonderful people from MR". I did attend a few M&G and learned what others do to there tank that I may use in my tank to make it better. I enjoyed the lecture on dipping corals ( I do have on DVD if any Moderator would like the copy to see if it meets rules and regs) and also like the "round table" talks as some one once called it. The auction was nice and a lot of fun and at ease. I have never went to a swap and from what I have heard is the swap is not a real Swap but more like a vendor day which is also very nice to see a lot of different types of corals in person instead of a picture, but maybe should change the name "Swap". But again the site is great and the M&G are great also alot of thanks to those who help set it up and a lot of luck and good Reefing to those in Westchester I would love to go to this M&G but cant due to family stuff but will try to make the next one and show some support to Reefers and maybe in the proses make some new friends. Good luck with the rules and lets all try to give advice to the Moderators like " Make event names reflect the event" and hope you like the new avatar

+1 on the event name change.
The officially official MR Swap is barely a swap... It's more of a vendor free for all. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I agree that the name of the event should reflect the actual event it self. I'm not that creative so maybe some creative folk can chime in with a fancy shmancy name.
*and please no one point out to me that there is some "swapping" that goes on at the MR "swaps", but the majority of trades are cash transactions..I along with several other members would love to see a true swap system worked out. Like Kathy said no one wants to trade Kenya tree for some rare fancy Zoanthids... But there could be a swap system devised which will allow people with any "caliber" of coral trade.
