ok i feel like dean here but i did some research. in 1904 when the subway opened a fare was .05 then in 1948 - .10; 1953 - .15; 60's - .20; 70's - .30; 80's - .60; 1986 - 1.00; 1995 - 1.50 then 2003 - 2.00

cpi in our area increased roughly 2139% over this time period (1905-2005)which means that if the .05 was a fare determined by free supply and demand forces, the fare today adjusted at cpi should be 1.07 (this analysis ignores any change in services offered and assumes you are getting the same service in 2005 as you were in 1904. so really, we are paying an extra buck for all the improvements.

see? so $2 is not that unreasonable.
Good work missy!

i would not complain if they could air condition the platforms

you want a $10 fare?

i cant even afford the gas needed to air condition my car!

but i think they are working to improve the 'air quality' on the platforms.

Once prices go up they never go back down to where they were. When we end up paying close to $4 a gallon for gas, who's going to complain when they bring it back down to $3, less than $4 but more than we are paying now.

And I have learned how to fix my own toilet and run my own electrical, can't afford a plumber or electrician.

If our income increased to stay in tune with our expenses I wouldn't complain. But, hubby not having a raise for almost 6 years and every single bill that I have gone up, makes payday to payday to far in between.

I would say the extra buck we pay now is too much.

I bet the condition of the trains\tracks\stations\service in 1904 was way better than what we get today, a lot less crime to speak off too. I got a feeling the 5 cents they charged in 1904 was high for its time because it took 44 years to double the fare.

LoL...we can see you dislike the subway...heheeee.....its really not that bad. I'm on the train almost everyday. Gets me where I wanna go and quick too. No traffic ;)....I only give money to people who look like they have nothing left to do. If a young guy tries getting some money...we share advice...GET A JOB!!!...:joke:..but i dont hand out money like that.

You gotta stop sniffing the peoples on the train...it'll make the ride that much less painful. :joke:...heh

so now we are talking about trains? the only thing that doesnt cost us more now?
ok, well i take it to and from work everyday (luckily i dont need to transfer). I hate the fact that you can get dressed in the morning looking and feeling like a million dollars, but by the time you get off the train, you look and feel like a homeless.

that, or you just GET ON the train looking like a homeless already! :joke:
even if you could afford a car and could afford the tolls and could afford the gas, you'll never be able to afford the parking (unless you give up your reef)

from the cartoons of this week "U.S. News" magazine.

"...news stories about soaring gas prices reached a record high today..."

"...with headlines across the nation up 16$ since monday..."

"...regular unedited stories and photos of SUVs at the pumps rose sharply in august..."

"...while hackneyed cartoons depicting drivers with bags of money on their roofs reached a five-year high..."

"...experts predict the price of a barrel of ink may be showing signs of weakness..."

"...as lengthy features about smug hybrid car owners begin to out-pace reader interest..."

I thought I had to chime in. Its really interesting to see peoples train of thought in this country. Just a bit of backgound on me. I am German. Born in Indonesia, moved to Japan for 8yrs, back to Germany, Kenya schooled in Switzerland then moved to China where I lived for almost 9 years before coming here 4 years ago. I see alot, hear alot. Funny thing to see people complaining about subwayfares of 2 bucks or the "high" gas prices. In Germany people dont earn more than here. I used to get taxed 60% yes that is 60%. I used to spend 20 bux a day on trains and gas prices always in the range od $2 per liter and there are 2.2 liters in a gallon. You calculate.

Its still cheap here compared to many places in the world. The fact of the matter is no matter how high prices become or how much things change people will adapt. Yeah innitially its hard and complaining aint going to help you much.

All of you guys have the perfect train of thought when it comes to your tanks. Something goes wrong - you fix it! Prices go up - you look for alternatives. You come to a board like this one and ask for help.

Apply the same thing to your lives and you will be ok. Take deepwater for example. Youre a plumber. You are someone that will always have work. I just had a suprise in the master bathroom when wanting to retile. Long story short. I need new subflooring so I decided to rip the entire thing out and just get a new bathroom. Its not that I have that kind of money to throw around, but I have an awsome guy that explained to me why I should just go ahead and redo the entire thing - so I did.

The point that I am trying to make is this. If you are good at what you do and you leave a trail of very happy customers and you are honest, there is no reason whatsoever why you dont have work and why you cant charge higher prices. I will pay good money for good work. ALWAYS. There are plenty of people that think the same as me.

If you suck and you are lazy and slacker - well you **** out of luck!!

My 2cents
