LOL the tire should last. The rest I just want to see them go crazy shakin them like they're hunting them hehe.

I am going to get a few kongs- the tennis ball lookin thing and the monkey are kongs though. Well made by Kong- but they will be killed probably in a week or less.

BUUUUT that's the fun- gives you reasons to do PETCO runs!

You are going to be an excellent daddy!:flower:

My gals & guys went through a few "Kongs" until I bought them the black ones.:) They haven't been able to chew through those.:)

Congrats on retirement & the pups!!!

I love getting young pups. The earlier, the better for an amazingly strong bond. I give a lot of respect to people who rescue dogs (I've done it myself ) but I just can't do it anymore. I have to know where my dog came from so I have a better idea of what he/she is going to be & behave like when they're grown.

There are a few tricks to testing a pup's temperment and if you have kids/grandkids in the family you should perform them to be sure that these are the right picks for your family. Feel free to PM or call me and I'd be happy to tell you about them if you're not familiar with them. It's so easy to fall inlove with a pup and miss certain behaviors (because they're so damn cute) that could be issues down the line.

There are 2 very important times in a pup's life that are crucial to bonding. It is best to get a pup by 8 weeks or 10 weeks at the latest. The 10th-12th week is an important time and if all goes well, you will build a stronger bond with that pup than if you were to miss it and get it later. That time period is also important in making sure that all experiences are positive ones and can be potentially cause permanent damage if it has bad experiences in that time frame. It happens again at around 6 months of age as well (been a while, I'd have to double check to be sure).

A book that is a good reference (I don't agree with certain training methods but that being said, these guys have it down to a science as to the timeline that goes hand in hand with raising a stable pup) is written by "The Monks of New Skete" (which is in upstate NY) and titled "The Art of Raising a Puppy"

Another good reference (but again I don't agree with all of her methods) is Carol Benjamin's "Mother Knows Best". She has 10 rules that are incredibly helpful IMO and anyone with a dog should know them. They can make training so much more pleasant for both us and our dogs.

I know it isn't kosher with a lot of people but I prefer a pup by 5-6 weeks old. At 6 weeks they can start to learn bad habits from their siblings so I try to avoid that if possible. I usually visit them at 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks and pick them up on the 5th or 6th week. The temperment test is usually always the deciding factor tho in determining which one is coming home with me.

I learned the hard way that not every dog can be taught to behave and can become a serious issue in a household but because of him, I learned all the tell tale signs in being able to decifer what parents I will take a pup from. Sometimes I'll come home with the cutest pup and sometimes not; it comes down to which one has the best temperment for my lifestyle.

With Boxers.... the parents hips should be X-rayed and proven to not have HD at the least. If a Boxer breeder does not have these on hand, they usually are just backyard breeders and no matter how loving of an enviroment that they provide, it still won't "will" the pups into having good hips or to be cancer free. If they don't have them, they should at least be willing to take them to a vet and have them X-rayed for future reference so that they know if their Stud and Brood females are worthy of being bred in the first place.

It's a shame that a lot of German dogs are susceptable to HD. That was a big reason for me staying with a sporting dog as opposed to a protection dog. I've known too many people to put down dogs at too young of an age because the dog was basicaly crippled from bad hips and cancer is huge with many of these guys too.

Hope I don't come off as raining on your parade, but I wish I knew what I know now before I got my first pup. I've had the priviledge of being around around a lot of pups, Sires & Dams and I've learned to respect how important of a role genetics play in whether bringing a dog into our families can be a great one or a horrible one. Pups make it hard to think logically sometimes & all I want to hear down the road is that your experience with these pups in the long term is a great one.

Thanks on the retirement

I've had dogs all my life, and have owned a boxer before so I'm far from going into it blind.

If you look at my breeders page they are a VERY, VERY responsible breeder http://www.dunnfordboxers.com/ - they breed once a year sometimes skip a year and don't pop litter after litter out of a girl throughout her life.

They are EXTREMELY choosy with who they breed with sire wise. This is where the 2 sires for these litters came from- http://www.dracoboxers.com/

They do all the health testing on heart, lung and all other aspects of all of their females. The only reason they're breeding again this year is that they wer breeding to get a lighter brindle and another fawn show dogs and because if the c section with Brooke the fawn mom they lost 95% of the puppies from her litter due to the anastesia.

I went there a month and a half ago and met the moms and the breeders. Saw the Mom's temperment both which were stellar....

Went there on the weekend of the 28/29/30th of April and met the pups. They are all sweethearts. I picked my 2 in person, not over the net.

I have looked at the pedigrees of the litters all the way back to the great, great grandparents of both pups litters. In both lines combined there may be 5 or 6 that werent champions, all the others were/are going to be in the next couple of months and the ones that all have their titles 3 out of 4 were champions in multiple countries for each- some were/are American champions only, but most had titles in the US, Mexico, Canada and Venezuala.

I was shown not only just the pedigree sire/dam info but also each ones markings, as well as the records of which passed away with what conditions or if it was just old age and natural causes.

The breeder also doesnt sell puppies to ANYONE that they know will fall out of contact with them. They do that for 2 reasons 1) they love to watch their babies progress, Sandi and Chris become like family with those they deal with and 2) so they can keep track of any conditions(cancers, displasia, etc.) that pup develops to help them not breed pups in the future if any of those conditions come to be a hereditary condition in that pups lines.

They not only had an application, but they had to talk to a couple of my friends(which they stayed on the phone for over an hour with them) and talk to my vet before ever approving the pup going to me.

It's also an agreement that is in the contract you sign that if at anytime throughout the life of the dog you can not keep it because you can't support it financially or for whatever reason the dog goes back to them NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

They prefer to have everyone come to meet them along the process and see their home and the dams on premise and the puppies never spend a day outside in a kennel.

In fact none of their dogs spend nights outside either- they're out during the day but come in for the nights and are in and out all day. They treat them all like gold and treat the people they choose to home their puppies with like gold also.

Another reason I volunteered to pick up daisy the bulldog for motortrendz friends- I'll spend more time with my girls AND bring a great dog to a great new life-win,win.

Please understand I have plenty of experience and didnt go half cocked into this and you honestly can't find a better breeder than Sandi and Chris.

I also didnt get another after I had lost my last boxer Bailey until I was going to be there 100% of the time to properly train them and provide proper structure for them.

I decided to get 2 because I know every one of my friends that had 2 did much better never being separated from all of their brothers and sisters than my friends that only had 1. So I have the time and I'm not going back to work until after they are well past the extreme puppy stages. Probably not for another year and a half or so.

I'm also hiring a professional trainer to aid in training 2 of them at once so ALL of the proper procedures will be done 100% of the way of their development.

Sorry about the novel but I wanted you to see that I think ALL bases were properly covered. I'd like to think that I'm old/responsible enough to not let puppy love strike hard enough to make any poor decisions.

Please don't think that I was saying that you r making a poor decision by any means. This breed has become one of the most poorly bred breeds on the US market in the past 15 years or so and it is extremely hard to find a great breeder. All breeders think they're bloodline is the best lol. A few breeds that have become popular have been so overbred that it just makes it hard for us to find well bred specimens. I wish u the best of luck with your new additions and I hope they are the best representations of their breed.

So many people just aren't aware of what has been going on with backyard breeders and puppy mills. I wasn't saying that your breeder is either of those because I didn't research them at all.

My breed is a perfect example of a breed that has been destroyed and the beginning of it's fall started in the mid-80's when it gained the reputation as a human aggressive manbiter. Anyone who knows what the breed is supposed to consist of knows that these dogs are one of the most loyal and sweetest dogs on this planet. For a while now, a lot of ignorant people have been breeding them to be protection or attack dogs and they were never intended to be one of those dogs. Yes they have the best tools for it. but any pup/dog that showed human aggression was culled because it was a bad defect just like breeders will cull a birddog if a dog shows now interest in a fowl but now people breed them to be human aggressive when they were only ever bred to be animal aggressive, just like a beagle is bred to be rabbit-aggressive. We all know that APBT's were unfortunately bred for fighting for hundreds of years but animal aggression doesn't equate to human aggression as in the example of a birddog or a beagle. Yet, people now are breeding them to be human aggressive.

There are a few dog breeds that are on the same track and a few of them are the Boxers, German Shephards, Dalmations, Rotties, Golden Retrievers, Chocolate Labs and a few more. I know in my lifetime APBT's will be banned and unless there are better breeding practices for the breeds listed, they may suffer the same consequence down the line. Goldens and Chocolate labs have become one of the number one biters of childeren in the last few years. Crazy right?

Unfortunately, dogs having show titles don't necessarily equate to a model citizen of any breed. Those awards mean that the dog is a good example of the description of what that dog is supposed to look like. If you had a show winning German Shephard that let someone rob your house but bit members of your family, that wouldn't be a good example of the breed. If I had a show winning APBT that was bred to be a huge freak of nature and couldn't run a lap around the block without keeling over, that too would be a bad representation of the breed because it's supposed to be an athlete.

I just like talking shop when it comes to dogs, so please don't think that I'm being critical of your choice. I am a fan of Boxers and I hope they get back to what they are supposed to be.

The best that we can do is meet the parents and in the case of many dogs, we have to see X-rays of their hips.

Yeah I didnt take it anyway but good. My breeder is one of the ones trying to bring the standards back and is why I said so much- no titles dont mean perfect dogs, but the champions they have come from solid, healthy lines is all i was getting at. Anytime I talk to her she hands out a handful of good knowledge so I like to talk to her as much a spossible.

One of the best parts of having a dog is the people u meet along the way. Are u thinking about entertaining the thought of showing them or are they fixing them as part of the contract?

The show circuit or agility trials can be a pretty cool experiences if that's something that interests u. Especially in cases where you're working them out hard for a show or with agility competitions, the time you put into your bitches will pay u back 10 fold with the way they bond to you in that time is well worth the time invested even if you get a few blisters along the way.

I dunno about Boxers (which are part of the mastiff family) but in the case of Cane Corso Mastiffs, my female thought she was my girlfriend and a couple of times I caught her "peeing" on my other half's side of the bed....I knew it was wrong but it was a little hard not to laugh. In her head, she was my wife and was a little jealous I guess. It's happened to a few people that I know with mastiffs.

Her name was "Cha-Cha" (I know but it was between that and Fifi) and when I drove my 5spd convertible, she'd sit in the passenger seat with her right paw draped over my bicep with her head on my shoulder and she would just stare at me all dreamy-eyed the whole time I drove =).

I prefer a ***** over a dog for the most part. IMO they are much more protective and a little more concientious at my side but I don't think she'll let me get another female after those few episodes :):catty females I guess::) and she loves dogs too.

Meet Cha-Cha (this is just a pic from google but it's pretty much what she looked like)

No I'm not going to show them. Bella definately is not show quality. Great pet quality and beautiful but not for show.

Ruby was picked by the owner of the sires who's big into showing out of all of them STRONGLY recommended her for show. Said at 4 weeks she's already perfect, but I just can't make myself put her through ear cropping.

I can't do the agility with them due to injuries from a near death moroncycle accident in August of '08. I cant really run anymore. Broke both my legs and have rods in both and a screw in my left ankle, I tore my shoulder COMPLETELY apart and had a 6 1/2 hour surgery to reattach/rebuild all my shoulder stuff, and had torn my spleen. I have plenty of ways I'm going to excercise and mentally challenge them though.

I'm just looking forward to being blessed with the pups in my life and to take them almost everywhere I go.

I used to have a dog treadmill. I can't say the word "treadmill" around my dog without him flipping completely out. Most are self-powered and some are called carpet mills or slat mills. If introduced properly to a dog, it can be an invaluable tool/toy for excercise. Carpet mills are quieter. All u do is harness up your ***** and clip her harness into a bar that is above her so she can run as fast as she likes. Some have an adjustable height on the front so you can let your ***** run on level ground or raise it as she builds her endurance to more of an incline. It is a great tool for a dog that has a lot of energy but no where to go to release that energy. Just food for thought.

The last one I had got torn to shreds from all of the miles my dog put on it. My next one will be a carpet mill unless they comeout with some other more silent model.

I'm sure there are clubs that are specific to Boxers. I compete in APBT Specific Shows. It's more of a fun experience than it is a real competition. They'll usually be kennel clubs that we've never heard of before but they're legitimate and make for a good time. They're mainly a lot of people that are all in support of the same breed and barbeques. U usuallly meet people that really care about the breed and things that can be done to preserve them.

The sanctioned shows that I go to will usually have a "Fun Show" that is done without scoring any points. They'll do CGC awards, Obedience, fastest or longest time on a treadmill, best conditioned and a few others that I"m sure I'm forgetting about but I'm sure if you're interested at all that you'll find shows sanctioned by a Boxer Kennel Club. Weight pulling contests are an other pretty amazing part of these shows but IMO it's too much strain to put on a dog's body. I saw little 34# APBT's pulling 3400 pounds and up of cinder blocks on a cart. It's amazing how much heart they have and what is even nicer is that they don't do it to get a treat, they do it to get to their owner. Now that's LOVE!!!!

You don't have to run at all and it just makes for a good time whether u win or not.

http://www.nyboxerclub.com/about.html

Show quality or not doesn't always mean anything because some judges interpret a dog's description in different ways. I've seen dogs that I wouldn't have thought to be a good representation win. Plus there are huge differences in a dog judged by different kennel clubs or just the judge within kennel clubs so Bella could still have a shot and if not, it was a good time that you spent with your dog. A true German Boxer from a "working bloodline would almost never win in a UKC, AKC or WKC sanctioned show BUT when it comes to these smaller KC's you may come across a judge who loves an old school look and maybe Bella is just that.

I'm surprised that ear cropping is mandatory still. Europe has banned it at this point but for as far as I thought, it was optional here. I know it's become optional with a lot of breeds......... sounds like a good enough reason for a European Vacation =)

None of the dogs that my friends and I have, come from show bloodlines so when we got into it was just for fun and then we started winning at every show on a local basis (NJ, NY & PA)and the next thing we knew we were making trips of it as far as NC & VA and won there too. The only thing that we took seriously about it was getting our dogs in to great physical condition and all for a $0.50 ribbon, lol. .... or u could just opt to by yourself some $0.50 ribbons and call it a day.

Any boxer show the ears need to be cropped- except agility. The UK has also banned docking as well. The only exception is if it is a civil service or military working dog- Police and miltary K-9's.

I just simply want a couple of beautiful loving pets to spend my time with and spoil majorly. I have plenty of friends with boxers that I'll be getting together with and dloing long, long walks and trips to our place in PA and when I move the house I'll be buying is going to have a couple of acres that I'll fence in and they'll have basically a safe pasture to run around in together and will have a ball launcher to throw it further than I ever can.

one of the coolest things I've ever heard of... that is an amazing workout and a half.

I wish I had a place to let my guy run around like that. I usually take a kayak out to a little island in the middle of a lake and throw sticks and balls into the water. It's the only place that I can safely let my dog run around freely without being worried that someone else's loose dog may bump into mine. 1/2 scary tho 'cause I have no idea how deep the water is.

I like your idea a lot more tho, but no where around here to do that and be a responsible dog owner at the same time. He loves people but not a big fan of other dogs so I never take a chance.

I can understand, hes a powerful breed so if the worst case scenario happens it would be a bad situation.

He doesnt get along with any other dogs at all?

He absolutely does but I only put the time in to make him trustworthy around dogs of friends and family members. There is no reason to chance anything with a dog and a dog owner that I don't know. Not every person who has a dog understands how dogs see things and how a dog may react in a certain set of circumstances.

Some people are beyond the point of thinking rationally when it comes to their dogs. Many people think that all dogs must be friends and I've had people without a clue with a dog that may be dog aggressive or just a dominant individual that they'll let approach a pup that I have and they act like everything is okay and next thing u know their dog is attacking my pup. I've been in that situation before so now I'm a lot more cautious. The same way I wouldn't teach my child to be friends with strangers there is no reason why I will make the mistake of putting my dog or someone else's dog in the position where they are 2 complete strangers.

I also never want my dog to be one of the dogs that people hear about in the news and 9 times out of 10 when we hear about a dog that someone calls an APBT, it is never an APBT. It may be some poorly bred monstrosity of a mixed breed that has some kind of Pit in it but they're always some 100+ LB mutt and true APBT's are usually between 25 and 65 lbs and can go upto 75lbs but they're half a freak of nature so anything beyond that is definitely not an APBT.
So a dog looks like an APBT but it's size is usually from some mastiff and mastiffs are supposed to be human aggressive so now there is a recipe for disaster with the tools of an APBT and the human aggression of a mastiff. One thing about this breed is that even if it is the other dog's fault, it will always be the APBT's fault in the eyes of whom ever is doing the judging. It's a priviledge and a curse at the same time but my buddy is worth it.

Convincing anyone that APBT's are the best breed in the world is something that I'd never claim but it is the best breed for me for so many reasons and eventho they come from an unfortunate past, it's because of that misfortune that I have a dog that has amazing attributes that are an indirect product of a barbaric history. (ie. they are dogs that have the greatest tolerance for pain of any dog in the world and that fact could also be interpreted as there being nothing that a daring child could do to cause it so much pain that it would bite my child and my dog is proof of that but I was lucky to have met one of the best breeders in the world and the only way to get one is by knowing him personally or thru personal recommendations) Like all relationships, you have to accept & respect each other's pasts to have something healthy to build on so I don't mind where they come from. Like u, I did tons of research into the breed before making up my mind.

I have almost always had 2 dogs at the same time and he has loved 3 of them as well as close friends and families dogs. It is something that I and those close to me have worked on to build relationships with theirs and my own on short but good experiences and built it up from their to a point where we no longer have to keep an eye on them.

Most dogs that I am around come from "extreme" working dog bloodlines and are not dogs for beginners so it takes a bit more effort to get them to be trustworthy around eachother as most of them have egos bigger than their appetites. Dominant traits have to be dealt with a healthy level of respect to ensure the best outcomes possible. Being that my dog is bred for having an ego I usually have to have him around dogs more submissive than him.

EDIT:::: unless it's a female. If it's a female, she may be more dominant than him but he won't care 'cause .........well he's a dog!

Seems that way sometimes but u just learn to approach things differently. Rather than put myself or my dog in an awkward position, I just avoid it. I've even put myself between my dog and a loose dog that got away from someone. I yelled at him at the top of my lungs and I guess he believed me 'cause he turned around but he was at full steam before I yelled at him. Some people tell me it was a dumb move but I just didn't want my dog going down that route and luckily it panned out in my favor.

A famous author that is an APBT advocate, wrote about a time he was at some big park and a child was playing in a huge open grass field with no one around and a Great Dane ran in and attacked the child and no one was within a few hundred yards that could help him. He released his APBT and it went into the Great Dane like a hot torpedo and the Great Dane let go out of sheer anquish. He ran over and got his dog off the Dane, the Dane ran off, onlookers got to the kid and he leashed up his APBT and took off running while people were trying to thank him because it is illegal to allow dogs to fight and he was affraid they would scoop his dog up because once anyone hears that an APBT was in a fight with another dog more times than not it will be put down possibly even in an situation like that. I think most would agree with him in that case.... it isn't worth losing a good dog but I think most would have released their dog too if it could save the kid before anyone else... so screw the hero syndrome and save your good dog once the kid is safe. None of my dogs have ever gotten into so much as a squabble with another dog and I plan to keep it that way but the desire is apparent when they see another dog. It's not as insane of a look as some may think. It's more like a birddog getting excited when he sees a duck or when a hot dog truck drives by.lol ......... He cries when he sees kids 'casue he wants to play. I can't drive past parks that are filled with kids without him crying like a little woosie 'cause he wants to play. I can't say my friends' names or their dogs' names without him wanting to see them and he knows who each of them are because he shows different levels of excitement for each of them on a consistent basis. Maybe I'm over cautious but 1 slip up is all it takes.

but anyway... have u decided if Bella & Ruby are going to sleep on the bed or on the floor? =)

Thanks!

I'd like to say the floor, BUT I know myself WAY to well. I'm a big softie and I actually loved Bailey sleepin right next to me. So most likely the bed.LOL

She should have good conformation, her rear legs seem to stack a bit naturally- their handler picked Ruby out of all the pups as show quality. Pictures do her no justice. When you are with her in person there's something about her face especially that literally grabs you and demands your attention.

It's hard to explain. She has a deep soul behind those eyes even as a young pup. But I absolutely fell for Bella also- she was the only one out of 11 that had to be birthed through c section to survive. There's a great story and a very large will behind her.

same here... but it was actually her that let ihm start sleeping with us and I told her it was a bad idea because we've a basketcase dog and I was big on not wanting to have a "part 2" but I put my foot down and the 3 of us it was in our bed. lol

after our kid was born she didn't want him in the bed and since then up til now.... he waits til we're sleeping and even looks at us to make sure we're knocked out and sneaks into bed... the big headed bast@#)d.

I'm guess she's going to look like this (minus the penis of course but plus the ears lol). Let's look back in a few months and see how far off I am.

EDIT: cross that off about the ears... This guy is a Euro FCI specimen so it has it's ears. All breeds and bloodlines would be so much healthier if they abided by FCI (F?d?ration Cynologique Internationale or World Canine Organization) standards.

Yeah the Euros stack with their legs much farther back. In Germany they actually just started letting white compete. They go under the same standards of shoulder height, proper shoulder height, body length, stature andmust have a totally black nose. Right now only whites show against whites but it's a great first step to make it to where whites aren't just put down because they're born white.

By the way, have you ever tried giving your pup DE (diatomaceous earth)?
