If I told you what my dogs go thru for a stupid $0.50 ribbon u may be a bit more open to thinking about it. lol
in all honesty, they do it cause they love the challange of the workout and I do it for the bond with my dog
8 weeks total:
weeks 1-2:
Just have fun with them. Take 'em to a lake and throw a stick in for hours and let them fish it out. Have them zip around after a laser pointer for hours. Do what ever u can to let them have fun for long periods of time that get to be increasingly greater with everyday that passes and get their cardio and start to get their muscles loose.
By week three.........
Started him off walking 3 miles a day on day one and everyday up it an extra mile or so;
Come home, get him started on his treadmill for 8 minutes and everyday up him a few more minutes and never let him get tired before you stop. Always take him off before he gives up so he feels like you short changed him having fun. Everyday that you go to pull him off, he'll push harder so you don't take him off because he's having so much fun
After a run, it's outside to play some tug-o-war his way. (any other way will rip by arm off after 10 minutes so this way is better)... under my tall deck I have a garage door spring that hangs with a tug-o-war rope that hangs on it.... start him off at 10 minutes on day one and pull him off before he gets tired....
Everyday increase the work out....
start off with a deep tissue massage because u need to protect his muscles because it's just going to get tougher plus you don't want him to digest properly so it's best to cool him down first.
After every workout increase his amount of food so his reward is something that he looks forward to and because he will need more calories to keep this up
At week 4 we're at 15 miles per day hand walking, 1.5 hours on the treadmill and 1.25 hours on the tug-o-war rope and he never touches the ground and this goes on until week eight. and then a few days later is competition time....
Amino acids keep him hydrated as do electrolytes
High calorie intake is crucial to build muscle tissue and keep up with his calorie consumption
I read that this is how they would get them in great shape and I didn't believe it so a few friends and I decided to put our dogs to the test and not only did they love it, but if I was too lazy or beat up one day and tried to stay in, my dog would go nuts and he is otherwise a couch potato. He'd bark by the door or stand on the treadmill and try to run but it wouldn't move because he wasn't strapped in. lol absolute nutcase when I want him to be.
I dunno too many breeds that have that kind of heart.
