Looking shiny! One question - is the stand lower than the wall then, or is that my eyes playing tricks on me?

Tom, the stand is on its side for convenience, it will ultimately be flat, the pics are the best I could do with a cellphone in late afternoon light with limited time.... more to follow- the glass is arriving here on Friday- expect some photos with water by next weekend- and with corals, LR etc...

Nah, I can see that Andy. What I meant is that from your pics it looked like the lower edge of the wall built around the viewing pane of your tank was higher than 60cm, but if the stand is 60cm, I assume the wall must be the same height.

Sorry, it may be deceptive with photos, the stand will sit a bit lower than the wall height, near 100mm (4 inches) to accomodate the marine ply and plystyrine that the glass rests on, and the sub-sand level. Its gonna be awesome when its done, I look forward to entertaining you Tom and many other people here over the coming years....

PS Just got the stock list from an importer in Indonesia, and I dont know where to start. 8O This tank will support 160 corals and 50 fish..... any thoughts will be appreciated. I will obviously bounce the list of Dawg and maybe some others, but basically, I can organise my own shipment.....my rock is cycled, and the tank will be ready for livestock in 14 odd days......

When will the rest of the house be ready Andy? Not sure I'd start stocking until you are moved in and can watch things daily.

I can't even begin to conceive of a tank big enough to justify its own shipment. 8O

Oh and Tracy, I think the problem is that Andy's cut back on the rest of the house to pay for the tank. It's more or less done now. He'll be sleeping on a roll mat in front of the tank. :P

I dont know the spelling, and I dont know what it looks like (I'd recognise it if I saw them and probably know them by a colloquial name) there is a highly desireable fish freely available here that is in big demand in the hobby..... its called a jamartin (Spelling is no doubt out). Apparently US hobbyists dont get access to them regularly, if at all, and its freely available here. I will find out more details and someone can fill me in on just how desirable they are....

Still trying to figure out what kind of fish you're describing here. I ran down every species of fish in SA and the closest I could come to a common name, in either English or Afrikaans, was "Tamarin", a type of wrasse.

Great work Andy, things are progressing quickly. 8)

Earlier you'd said that you plan to stock mainly soft corals. Is that still the plan?

Will the silicon support the pressure against the tank walls or will you have a support frame around the top and bottom perimeters?
Can't wait to see the results.

Lets not get into the whole cost overrun of this project, I was in a reasonably good mood..... :( :(

The house is coming along nicely, will post some more pics this weekend when I have the kids ( I cant take callouts when I have them so I have some spare time on my hands.) I am hoping to be in the place in 2 months time. The roof starts on Monday BTW.

As for stocking prior to occupation, as I spend every spare minute I have on site atm, it wont be a problem. I also want the tank running, fully cycled and stocked by the time I move in. While I am patient, I would like the whole settling in process of the new system done in parrallel to the completion of the house. The tank room is getting a door and a coat of waterproofing on the plaster over the rest of the week and construction on the glass can begin on the weekend. Part of the plumbing for the second tank and the main sump is going in trenches today.

Mainly LPS Craig, thats the plan.
I have an uncontaminated source of elegances from Bali and I really want to concentrate on them and LPS corals.

While the tank is designed to be free-standing and is braced accordingly, where it is possible we will drive wooden wedges in between the glass and the wall to further distribute the load. All four corners are capable of being supported in this manner as a suppliment.

Setback no 1: the current stand- while shiny, is useless. The hot galvanizing process has warped the stand and made it useless. We get to start over with the stand now- (read: a week's delay)

Aint life great!

Some more progress is being made, the power is in and wired- just needs to be connected- pics show some of the aquatronica controlled plugpoints, and the distribution board. Also shown is the plumbing going in between the new tank location and the location of where my existing tank is going to be placed.

Why did the galvanizing process warp the steel?

What are you going to do different next time?

BTW, it sure looks like cops is SA make a ton of money.
