I have spent most of my life as a conservationist. I performed Wildlife rehabilitation growing up with my father and shared this pursuit with my girlfriend and now wife Ivy. We also worked together in the Biology field working to preserve endangered species, I worked primarily with Primates and Ivy with Large cats.

In working with Primates one of the key functions was to educate people and governments of how the animals were Legally collected. You see I worked with and gathered a worldwide survey on Howler monkeys. It was also reported by Importers that the monkeys were netted and brought in humanely, and of course that local villagers hunted the monkeys for food. The importers through lobbying performed by many of the pet trade organizations kept supressing reports of the contrary. It was finally brought to light that the monkeys were caught by shooting the mother carrying an infant on her back and then taking the infant knowing it would not run from its dead mother. Only 8 out of 10 baby monkeys survived the fall. This is how the collection was done for many years mostly due to Importers having so much say in how the pet trade was run and also how the animals were captured. Many years before this was how chimps where collected until it became too high profile of an animal. To try to bring about change the importers were not allowed to participate in any legislation of the trade of primates.

I also through my time with conservation groups am aware of many of the same things that happen with other species.

Parrots have always been a big part of the trade and recently one of the most respected importers of Parrots was jailed and severely fined for the smuggling of exotic endangered species. Again Harry Sissen was a leader in psittacine breeding and importing. He became so trusted that he was able to cause some unbelievable damage to nearly extinct birds. Again allowing importers to become too involved in the trade.

Harry Sissen Jailed

Reptiles have become a huge trade and again one of the largest importers who first traded legally and then traded illegally has been jailed. In a conference in Orlando the whole structure of reptile trade is being reviewed and the role importers serve.

Wong Jailed, "This case underscores the tremendous growth in both the legal and illegal live reptile trades"

You see I do not believe that importers should be looked at as bad because most of them are very legitimate business owners who live by a sense of moral right. History has shown that when importers are allowed to be an integral part of the animal trade that they conduct the buying and selling of animals in, sooner or later it will end in a devastating loss of that species of animals.

Reefs.orgs decision to open a forum and have it moderated by an importer is a breach of all that I have spent time in the conservation of endangered animals.

You see Mary Middlebrook may be a swell person but when any animal trade organization begins to structure itself with Importers in a position of influence it may not be Mary but history will repeat itself and I will not be a part of it.

In the Ban Of Wild Harvesting in Australia thread Mary made it very clear that she fully supports the ongoing collection of animals without regulation and has tried to get the support of people to supress legislation that is designed to protect species. I have been through this far too many times to not know the road it leads to.

Although I will not be around to see it, I hope that the moderaters of this board do not close this thread too quickly as I have not mis-stated any facts.

Goodbye to my friends on this board.

This is completely UNTRUE. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has had quotas in place for the collection of animals for the aquarium trade for years. The industry has consistently collected FAR LESS than its quota. (The exact statistics were made available at the time the ban was being proposed, but I don't have them in front of me). The Park Authority was also SUPPORTING the continuation of collection by the aquarium trade. Australia probably has the best and most enforced coral reef management plan in the world. The collection is definitely regulated.

99% of wild birds caught for pets to import die en route.

I'm new to the reef hobby, but am guided by my conscience.

I see countless aquarists that are careless in their purchasing and LFS owners that are dangerous in their sales. From wild animal catchers.

I've seen stingrays, lionfish, massive arawani, rare plecostemi that can only breed in miles-long river runs, and countless other rare, unique, and hard/impossible to care for species bought and sold. I've seen countless dead Mandarin Dragonets, their majesty and life taken by reckless dealers. From reckless catchers.

Stingrays in a fish tank?!?!? Why not a dolphin in the bathtub?

I am only interested in captive bred and raised animals and plants. Because I know I can't provide a healthy home to wild animals that have been torn from nature that I cannot breed and prevent from happening again.

Because... it simply isn't right.

If you love the wild animals, let them live in their homes, not your tank. Find breeders. Breed them yourself.

I like your posts, Fishaholic. I am going to join you in your protest and leave this community. I wish animal catchers hell, but the rest of you well.

PLEASE THINK about what you buy.

David:

I think you are making a BIG HUGE MISTAKE and urge you to reconsider. If you care as much as it appears from what you have written in your other post, you can do much more good arguing with these people than letting them silence you. Resigning in protest is fine if you are head of the UN Aid distribution program for Iraq, but here we are all just friends trying to learn from each other. You will do me and many others a great disservice if you leave. Please reconsider.

Well I for one do not want to see you leave as you have added a conscience to a lot of the threads.
You may not appreciate it right now but many new members parrot what you have preached on this and other boards.
If you continue on this board many new members will walk into the LFS armed with the ethics of importing and keeping very difficult species and refuse to buy them or better yet raise hell.
If you leave the board those who fill their 50s with tangs, keep mandarins in 10s and boast about their success with Moorish Idols, difficult coral and certain anenome will prevail. The new reefer will than think that it is OK to continue this butchery.
So my friend take a bit of time off this board if you choose. I for one fully understand this but as Sir Andrew Barton, an Elizabethan soldier wrote.
"Fight on my man...
I am wounded but I am not slaine.
I'll lay me down and bleed awhile
and then I'll rise and fight againe."

Looking forward to your quick return, eh!

Interesting post David.

The idea of the new forum is about education. It's not a platform for Mary to sing the praises of the aquarium industry.

The proper thing to do would be to stay and make your opinion known. Perhaps a few people here would learn from you. The improper thing to do, in my opinion, is to "take the ball and go home."

You have to ask yourself, what do you want to accomplish? Then, how do you want to do that?

Cheers

fish,
I am going to stick around a little but may be joining you. I don't agree with many of Mary's previous posts and see this as a platform for the industry. I don't have time to post the opposing view as often as it would generally require. Since I work in DC on policy issue maybe I will devote my time to start working on bans and legislative measures.

Like most of the people on this board, I too hope you will reconsider. I am fairly new to this hobby and have only now began to realize that many dealers are not interested in your success, much less the environment. When my tank was only two weeks old a salesperson at a large chain store told me that I could add a mandrin becuase they were hardy and easy to keep. (I ended up not buying one.) At the same store and on the same day another sales person convinced me not to buy a cleaner wrase because in his opinion they were being over collected and hurting the wild population. This shows me that there are some people who do care and are willing to try to educate us. This person is trying to do it at a fish store and likley putting his job on the line to do so. The moderators have let this thread stay and I would assume that they would not edit your future posts (though I realize that this does not address the problem of influence.) If you are intent on leaving I wish you luck and have one request. You seem very knowledgeable and I would ask that you post a list of fish and corals that you consider most at risk from this hobby. I realize that tank-raised is the way to go, but where I live it is very rarely if ever offered, and this list could serve as a guide for myself and others of what to avoid at the fish store. Once again I wish you luck and success for the future.

Maybe I am the naive one here but I see this new forum as yet another way for mature discussion and open dialog. As far as I have been able to ascertain, the people who run this board are more conservation minded than 95% of the people who frequent this board. They are actually trying to make a difference for our hobby and the health of the reefs, how can that be wrong?
I am all for any platform that allows people to get by the "us and them" attitude, and I see this forum as a step in the right direction.

That wich does not kill us will only make us stronger.

Dave you are a very significant limb in the body of Reefs.org. We need you should your wort fears materealise, if only to allert the rest of us.

I have recently decided to become a "conciensous" member. This does not mean that i will refrain from wild collecton, but take up the challenge to lessen the load on mother nature by helping in my limited capacity to provide others with propagated livestock and knowlege in an effort to ensure premeum care and wellbeing. Aquacultured instead of harvested. I dont trust the human race in any capacity. I have become very concerned about the environment in which we live. And i personally find it more likely that we will eventally become the savour of our sea's. After all we are its most avid admirers. And who's going to supply the sea should it crash. Every hobbyest and every LFS, weather they know it or not is a backup for what we all seek to preserve and enjoy. Make your voice heard, and your feelings understood. But please dont turn your back on this board.

Dave, bye!

I'm not going to beg you or anyone to stay. It's a free country, a free web, and a free message board.

I'm honored to have recently had the opportunity to meet James W. I for one am glad he helps run this board. He is a gentleman truly concerned about reefs, collection methods, aquaculture, and the future of this hobby.

I think it is great that we have a NEW forum to discuss the issues that face the future of the hobby. I posted my question about this hobby having a lobby group because I'm concerned for the future of the reefs; want to be responsible in my actions; be accountable for what I buy; and work to SUPPORT AND FURTHER the research and development of aquacultured fish and corals.

I was happy to see that we had an actual importer/wholesaler involved. It gives me and everyone else on this board an ear to tell them we want more responsible collection.

In closing, I would like to thank everyone involved with operating this board and thank all the members who post. You have educated me to be more responsible with my purchases of reef life.

Are you suggesting that the ethics of importing and keeping certain impossible to keep fish and corals is now only to ocurr in the industry forum?

What do you mean by 'these issues"'?
Thank you</strong><hr></blockquote>

FWIW, Mary answered that question in the new forum, and her response follows-

Hope this answers your question:
If you posted a thread in the main forum titled "Mandarin gobies die in captivity" and the focus was "Beware of these fish, they are hard to keep and here's why", that thread should stay in the main forum.

If you posted a thread in the main forum with the same title, but the focus was "These fish should not be collected", it should be put here.

Of course the idea that they shouldn't be collected would probably come up in the first example- whether or not it would be moved would depend on the primary focus of the topic.

The purpose of this forum is to discuss broadbased industry issues- like those presented in the "Not My Fault" and "Lobby" threads...not a specific animal by animal discussion about what is ethical to keep.

"What do you mean by your post? I see you posted it twice. "

Back Button got me.

For the record it was my recommendation for this forum. I guess I can take the blame for Fishaholic to leave.

The reason I suggested this forum was two fold:
1. To inform the reefkeeping community of pending issures facing the hobby (ie Caulerpa Ban in California and Coral Collection Ban in Australia)

2. To have real discourse between the hobbyist and the wholesaler/importer. Where does one have the opportunity to not only ask an importer where/how stuff is collected but also ask why. Most of us wonder why Gonipora is still collected well ask Mary why she thinks it is still collected. A new point of view is never bad.

The reason I approached Mary about moderating this forum and is such a good fit for reefs.org is her involvement in our hobby, not only the industry side, but the hobbyist side also. She is involved in AMDA, MAC, MASLAC (Marine Aquarist Society of Los Angeles) and many other organizations dedicated to helping our hobby.

"To pick up the ball and go home" as James so eloquently put it is probalby opposite of what should be done if you have real concerns with the industry. Voicing your opinion towards the parties you have an opinion of is not only the responsible but mature thing to do. To scream at collecting practices to people that do not collect is futile. To talk about LFS practices to people that don't own a LFS is futile. To discuss industry issues good/bad to non industry people is futile. Voice your opinion to the right source and change may occur.

I think I've written enough.

I'm going to chime in here, too.

First, Dave, you'll be missed. I think you're leaving for the wrong reasons, but it's your decision to make and I won't try to talk you out of it beyond saying that you know the stance I take on the ethics of the hobby, and you should know me well enough by now to know I wouldn't be a part of this if I thought it would further the hobby's unethical practices.

Olgakurt:
I don't agree with many of Mary's previous posts

Neither do I. She and I have different views on the direction the hobby should be moving in. But, nevertheless, she's in a fairly unique position of both being inside the industry and recognizing that reforms -- of some kind -- are needed. Mary's participation provides a very valuable service. Perspective. Providing a window into what the industry as a whole is thinking, what it's views are, what it's doing, what it's regular practices are. Regardless of wether you agree with Mary or not, it's invaluable to be able to ask an industry question and get a straight answer -- even if (especially if) you disagree with the content of that answer. I don't see her forum as an Industry Advocacy Platform, I don't believe she intends it as such, and I don't believe that even if she did that the ethical hobbyiests here would allow it to become so.

SPC wrote:

... and I agree. I welcome Mary's participation. In fact I'm very greatful we have it -- even though I've disagreed with her stance on some issues before and am very likely to continue to do so.

Everytime we get into another discussion on the ethics of the hobby, invariably someone posts that they wish they could make their concerns known to the industry, that they wished they could impress upon what they felt was important and neccessary, what changes they'd want to see. Well, now's the chance. That's one of the big things Mary's bringing with this new forum. It's a positive thing, a wonderful opportunity, and again, I for one am greatful for it.
