Yep, that's what I use. Always have to have the union, just mentioned about the ball valve, the Captain forgot the union :dead1:

this will be the overflow..

i already bought the 1 inch bulkhead.. should i get the return drilled to.. the same height or should i just let it hang off the back of the tank...

Yes, drill the return too. If you don't, a power outage back siphon will occur there just as it would with the overflow.

If you can put a 90 on your overflow so that the strainer lays half in and half out of the water surface you'll create more surface area for the overflow. This is so that if the overflow clogs from a snail, algae, a piece of Nori that floats away or whatever, the area above the waterline will still be clear and can still allow for the overflow and no flood.

Not sure if that was clear or not. Kinda confused myself! lol

I have the flexible tubing from an overflow box draining into an undrilled sump with no siphon issues.
