don't get roped into spending money on expensive coral now.

keep it simple and enjoy the tank IMO. you have plenty of time to set up tanks full of dendro's in the future :)

ugh ive had a bad day. my zoas are acting weird. half of them are closed up, and streaming brown gunk from their mouths. they have seemed to get better they are all opening now. the perams are fine except the temperature is a little low, but didnt get below 69.5 though.
should i be worried?? water change=tonight or tomorrow depending if its urgent enough not to age the water. should i QT?

i must confess to picking them up to see if that was the case, there was a tiny bristle worm, but the same species as my harmless long guys, right near them. i dont think it was trying to eat them because its mouth is practically microscopic. they were positioned in a little cove of lr, in the case they werent getting enough light, i moved them to the middle of the sandbed a little. ill keep you updated on how they are doing

Don't worry too much ET, your zoas are going to do whatever they want to do..it's just the way they are.
What they are expelling is Zooanthellae (go do a search and learn about it :)) and it is not uncommon for them to do so. If you're sure all of your water parameters are in the good range, just wait it out. No QT necessary.

One thing zoas don't like is to be moved! Leave them where they are now (I read you'd just moved them). They like being in the light on the sandbed. In time, if you see them stretching to get more light you can then move them up a couple of inches per week, and then see how they adapt to the new location.
The bristle worms didn't bother them. I have zillions of bristleworms and if they bothered zoas, trust me, I'd be freaking out.

Here is my big conern..did you really say your tank got down to 69.5 degrees??? Why? Don't you have a heater in there? If not, you need one, and I wouldn't waste anytime getting to the store!

i have a heater, and its on! i have to check what setting its on. my bristleworms crawl over them alot but i know that wasnt the cause. Im sorry about moving them. i did realize that a few were stretched out. that was a bad idea, but i kinda freaked out at the moment. another reason i moved them was because a couple weeks ago i found those invisible slug things with antennae around them so i moved them.
now theyre all open and theyve stopped expelling the zooanthellae, thank god.
thanks for all the help. ive learned alot from this

Let me try this again before another database error...

Yes, check the setting on the heater. If your temp is where you want it now, turn the heater to the point the light just comes on..then back it off a tiny bit so that it will maintain your temp if it falls below where it is now.

You did the right thing in moving the zoas ET. Leave them alone for now and see how they do. If they continue to stretch toward the light move them about 2 or 3" higher up. Do you have a current pic of them?
