We moved and came back. We went to Florida, a small town called Citra.. near Ocala. Beautiful area, horse country.. though something just wasn't right. The grass isn't always greener elsewhere. Before they poured the foundation on the home we planned to build, we moved back.

The only trouble about leaving NY is that most people that leave and don't like it are more likely to be unable to come back because of finances. We were very quick to come back so we were actually able to.

I am happy to say that Long Island is pulsing through my veins. Love it and hate it all the same but wouldn't want to live anyplace else. We have many friends and family elsewhere. My father is in NC near Huntersville. Very nice place to visit... but I don't want to live there.

if money wasnt an issue and not that i would need as much as i do to survive here, and i grew up in indiana, lived all around it, lived in columbus ohio, i would say if i could retire somewhere it would be down in good ole kentucky, nothing as pretty as driving through horse country looking at 1000's of acres of kentucky blue grass, it seems most people leaving ny are all going to south carolina, nice as well but alot move because someone else moved there, the mid west has alot of jobs if you arent far from one of the bigger cities, plus if you open the door for someone they will say thank you, or they bump into you , you'll get i am sorry, not watch the f*%k where your going :irked:

WAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Remember you only pay tolls to come into the city. To leave is free.

When I retire I'm moving back into the city.:tongue1:

BTW I love how you guys refer to your marriages as a prison sentence.

lol Intercourse PA, there is also a town named Bird in hand PA.
Wifeys parents live in Lancaster PA. Her mom is a minister at Lancaster theological, we visit 4-5 times a year. Its a nice place but I cant get over the smell of cow manure and the occasional run over skunk wafting in the air :(

Well, its comforting to know I'm not alone in my desire to leave the city. My fears are that having lived in a big city so long I would be uncomfortable living some place else. It is not as much a cost of living issue but more of a quality of life issue that I find myself thinking of the most and its impact on my 2yo and 5yo boys.

That's why I raised my kids an hour north of the city. I still get the benefits of NYC with a lot more comfort, safety and quality of life IMO. FYI, we not only get loads of dead smelly skunks on the roads around here, but we get them live too ;) We've also got fox, coyote, black bear, turkey, deer, rattle snakes, and a whole host of other game I'm forgetting about......only one hour north of NYC.

Born and raised in northern Westchester I agree with Russ, I have seen alive and dead of most of the animals listed and a few others especially reptiles. Oh and Steven, I don't pay any tolls to go to the city yet, this side of the river the trip is free!

I would move if I was actually married and didn't really need friends anymore. As someone that has moved around a bit for work, I like NY the most. I've been to Boston (Stuff closes WAY to early), Dallas (People have no clue how to drive at all), Silicon Valley (Everything is super spread out, quite a jog to get across the street, transportation is a mess), Bergen County NJ (Just ugh). These are all comfortable places in their own way but every place has their own little annoyances.
I definitely don't want to live in Manhattan, as I don't make that much to blow away on rent. But LI or upstate NY would be best, far away from the crowds and close enough drive to not be totally bored.

I moved out here from California six years ago. I really recommend moving out of your element at least once or twice. It's such a great learning experience. I will eventually make another major move. Not sure where to though. I'm thinking Hawaii. Cost of living isn't much cheaper, but at least its cheaper.

Funny, I grew up on LI, went to college in rural upstate, lived in Hawaii and California and traveled most of the country. There is no where I would rather raise my kid or live than Brooklyn where I live now. The culture , the art, the food , the exposure to other cultures and the community is unrivaled IME. Admittedly, I have a relatively cushy NYC academic life, but if its up to me, I ain't goin' nowhere.

I'm sure everybody has thought about this (including me) but I guarantee you this no matter where ever you chose to move to at some point or another you will find something that will bother you about that place too.
It's HUMAN nature to worry and complain and nobody is truly 100% happy.
We all want something and when we get it the want another thing, there's no end.:lol2:

I think everyone finds their happy place in this world, although you might trip and fall many times, I think it is possible to find a place that makes you happy enough that little things don't even catch your attention. Plus, I think it comes to the person more than the place. How willing are you to put up with the little things that can drive some mad and others love it.(ie people who cannot function outside the city vs those who just be miserable by the noise alone the city produces)

-I would also like to throw in there the nature vs nurture argument.

I am on the younger side to say these things, but I know I will find my "happy place" eventually.

You and I are alike :lol2: Almost..

Moved to Alaska, back to NYC in 2 years.

Moved to Taipei, back after 3 years..

Lived short terms in Miami, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Amsterdam, none of these are like NYC.

Moved to LA, backed after 6 years..

Moved to Seattle.. Back after ??

Not sure if I want my kid(s) to grow up in the city, or LI for that matter.. I guess I'll have to wait until they are in college before moving back again.

BTW, Deers ate all the flowers my wife planted in the front yard, back yard, side yard... I need a gun now.
