Again kimoyo, they said they're currently trying to find a place for the shark which could mean they're setting up a tank. We can call and email and they can say that "we're trying our best." The bottom line is that they look like the good guys helping out a customer and taking better care of a shark than that customer can. I thank kimoyo for your rightiousness but Herman is right, they're a business and they're not require to go to greater lengths. It'll be nice if they did but the public can't condemn them if they don't. That blow in the face knocked the wind out of my sails and the best thing I...we can do is respond to them with the Aquarium's contact info. :sigh1:  :happysad: :tired: Thanks everyone for giving a damn like me in the first place.
I wouldn't have even taken the time to write them in the first place or protest because I have other things to worry about. But I do think the response they gave you is bs. Whether or not you decide to continue in your campaign is up to you.

Plus I had a dream the other night i was getting chased by a shark.

lol...i do want to continue but just guaging what to do/say. Like you, i wish i have the luxury to be an activist but we all have school/work/family. In addition, after Herman's comment, I'm rethinking this entire approach.

Call the CACC or the ASPCA tell them the animal is not in a suitable environment and maybe they will go check it out. 311 can fwd you to the 2 organizations.

i have taken oscars to petland for credit. they gave me $90 store credit for 5 oscars that i had that had outgrown my tank, then turned around and made a profit off of them selling them for $59.99 each. so i am sure if someone asked how much they would sell it. even if the person that dropped it off got nothing. as for setting up a larger tank, yeah right, i took the picture 5 days before i posted it. my carrier was having upload problems on it's photo page and then i forgot about it. they were not settign up a larger tank the next time i went in lookng for a price. i bet they are lying to cover their asses. the manager could have just said that someone brought it in, and then maybe could have asked, you know where it could be sent?

While I do feel activism is a good thing. I personally would feel hypocritcal in this situation considering I'm happily collecting corals and fish which is another discussion I don't want to be a part off :).

Paul,

The way I see you is that you are part of a small group of people in this hobby that actually care. Although I have not met you Id like to believe that you dont go out and blatantly buy stuff that you know you cant keep alive. The act of propagating a coral by means of fragging it and distributing, whether for profit or not is a type of conservation.

Also judging by your past posts you are ae knowledgable person. Just the act of posting the information and debating certain issues creates awareness. Creating awareness in my books is the start for conservation.

The point with all of my ranting is this. If you see something that you dont like, think of a solution and try to provide it.

Placing blame and making other businesses look bad is just wrong considering that it is us (myself included) that is fueling the supply side of the equation.

Chances are that the guys at that particular LFS dont even care.

The only thing that we can do is try to educate, others from buying more than they can handle or buying something that is beyond the scope of their level of experience in this hobby.

I have to give a big shoutout to my peeps on manhattanreefs now . I've gotten multiple $80-$100 frags for about $10-$20 from about 3-4 different members. I told one of them the other day that when my tank grows out its going to be the $15 tank. Because I'm really starting to believe that what goes around comes around. But if I wasn't a member on this site, I'm sure I would have brought several wild colonies by now.

Well Im trying but to no avail

Ive gotten 5 replies from various groups. This is the one from seaworld who has quite a few affiliates. Its not looking good for the shark.

Dear Mr. Gareis,

I am sorry to hear about the shark's predicament. Although far from ideal,

depending on the species, some sharks do OK in small tanks, given good water
quality. I hope it doesn't stay there too long. As for finding a home for this
animal, the local institutions, like the New York Aquarium or some of the zoos
with aquariums, might be able to help with this. Knowing the species and any
other information on the animal will be helpful. Even if they aren't willing to
take this animal, they may be able to find a home for it through their contacts
or, possibly, assist in shipping the shark to another facility.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any groups that find homes for orphan sharks or
are looking for sharks at this time. Releasing an animal like this is generally
a bad idea. Most likely it's a tropical species and would not survive in local
waters. Even if it could survive, exotic species are causing trouble all over
the world and many governments, local and federal, have restrictions against any
kind of releases. Transporting it to its native habitat also has many problems.
Even native animals that have been in captivity have the potential of bringing
exotic diseases or parasites into the native populations that could wreak havoc.

Even responsible pet owners sometimes experience circumstances that force them
to give up pets that they would otherwise have kept indefinitely. Maybe that's
what happened here. I appreciate your concern and efforts to find a home for
this animal and hope you are successful.

Sincerely,

Carl Jantsch

Thanks Herman for giving me the hand in this...more like taking over as torch bearer :). You are the man. I replied to Petland as you suggested and I'm waiting for their response on how to make the transfer.
