:shhh: some peepS are poSting and tHey dont eVen got a taNk... wHen tHey did, taNk look like the eaSt riVer

yes it's funny, some people without tanks know more than some annoying people who have tanks.

I agree with Wingo, and just because he's one of the cool kids. I'd hope to see such a dumb patent overturned.

In the meantime I hope other LED companies can find a way around the snafu.

Or, we get the kickbutt end all LED DIY thread going on one of the numerous reefkeeping boards out there :D

Then we can tell them all to pound sand...

'cept for you wingo, 'cause your cool :D

am curiouS... how many peopLe on this tHread actuaLLy HAVE LED lighting

NOT "planning to buy"... but actuaLLY OWN one

I have a 6 feet "I" series from Dec. 2007 as shown on the post #56 in this thread, here is another side shot of the thank, I can post more pictures if more people are interested.

I know another member Vinnie K and LFS "Suffolk Fish?" have a 6 feet "G" series which was shipped prior to year 2007.

The big colonies of corals (Green slimer, blue tip acropora, green millie, orange monti cap, pink tip acropora) are all grown from 1" frags after Dec. 2007 under LED lights, some of them are over one foot wide. The members who attended LIRA monthly meeting have witnessed the growth of the corals.

James that tank looks awesome by the way :)

Kamy I was in the middle of planning a small LED array when this news broke.
I was told to check out nano reefs for info. Since we have our own LED expert Wingo here I was going to trouble shoot with him. I'd be happy to make anyone a house plant LED array when I figure out the process

James, that is totally awesome! Doesn't look anything like the east river :p

Please post more pics :)

And that is why I want LEDs over my tank, that kind of display and not a huge power hog.

jhale, I have looked at enough DIY LED projects over the last 7-8 months and my head is still swimming. If you figure out which LED's provide the power and spectrum needed by these critters please post.

Oh yea, also provide where to buy the LED's, circuit boards, how to provide power to them, how many of what color lamps and where to position, if they need heatsinks and how to attach those, ummm and yea, how to solder all those tiny connections :tongueani

Ummm, yea, I should just find a system to buy, thanks Orbitec!

To judge the coral growth under LED, the folliwng picture was taken 6 months prior to the pictures in post #56, #104. The big green polyps toadstoll leather coral in the center was shorter because it was cut and fraged into 8 pieces from the top for LIRA meeting attendees.

For smaller projects, you can buy electronics such as drivers from the places listed in nanoreef and you can also get my 12,000K 3W power LEDs by sending me email which are not available in the general market. If you are just looking for 8,100K to 10,000K <120 lumens LEDs, you can easily get them from ebay. Of course, I can match their prices if you can wait for me to special order them. I stock only the more efficient ones. I enjoy hearing stories about all DIY LED projects.

That is an insane amount of growth from those LEDs. I'm planning my own LED array and hope to have a fraction of your success. Have you had any experience with clams under LEDs yet?

I kept a very small maxima clam in the tank with LED for 6 months, and did not take pictures for comparison.

How did the clam do? Any growth, or at least did it stay healthy? Is it still in there?

I had two ten year's old 10" giant clam in addition to the small maxima in different tanks with the same water system, they all died a month ago with some coral bleaching possibly because of my overdosing of vodka. However the small maxima looked very healthy under LED when it was alive.

I could not tell whether it was healther under LED or MH, but any florecent colors really shows much better under LED than MH or T5.

James, isn't it possible, since you had those beautiful clams for 10 years that they died slowly BECAUSE of the LED's not being sufficient? Remember, they thrived until you installed the LED's at the end of 2007. They lived until 12/08. One year and then suddenly dieing, not uncommon for a clam to die overnight when looking healthy the day before. Maybe they had insufficient lighting with the LED's.

Just a theory.

I think it's unlikely that three clams in different tanks but sharing the same water died due to the LED's. From what I understand he was only keeping the maxima under LEDs I don't know what he was keeping the other two clams under. Also, LEDs have been proven to be able to produce PAR equivalent to MH and be able to produce light in that all important 420nm range.

James may be able to answer better but I think he meant(and I remember from last visit, he has the clams in different tanks under different lights. That is one or some of the clams that died is/are not under LED.
