Im a easy going person but sponge..ya need to give it a rest.

Darren..this is a new tank setup right? I have a new tank set up too and was worried about PH and calcium and all the other stuff.

Then a guy at the fishstore told me thi:
"Its a new system give it 6 months before you worry about crap like that. Do your 10% monthly water changes, add a few powerheads and filters to keep the water moving real good and enjoy watching the fish till the 6 months is up"

Sounds real good to me. Keep reading and asking questions, but dont worry too much about numbers till the tank is 2 or 3 months old and your ready to start spending big money on a really pretty fish or two.

In the mean time buy a smallish cheap fish like a chromis or a damsel and enjoy watching things grow on the rocks.

Thats actually not a bad piece of advice!

It will take a while for everything to stabilize.

But it is also very good to learn the chemistry and gain from the experienced aquarists here as early as possible, so when you are ready to go to the next level, you have a good understanding already.

Bu Omni is right....dont fret too much about having the perfect numbers...in time, it will all fall into place...take your time.

I'm prepared to wait, always have been In essence i was just wondering why i got 2 readings from the same water.

It turned into a **** fight and I stayed away.

My tank is still cycling and settling down, so I wasnt too worried.

But in trying to understand felt the size of a pod!

but you get that!

Thanks to all those who helped, appreciate it greatly.

I do not appreciate you suggesting I or others have a "serious problem of logic." This is the type of insults that is unnecessary (explain how this statement is constructive in the least bit). I also do not appreciate you suggesting I have a poor reading comprehension.

Gas mixture levels differ from location to location. The ambient gas levels of, say, the rainforest versus the Himalayans, is vastly dissimiliar, and yet people can survive in both environments. The point I'm tring to make is people's anatomies are adaptive and tolerant. Just because it does not effect our mortality does not mean it does not effect other functions or organisms.

I don't know what race or nationality you are, but I think it is grossly unfair to categorize your people group based on how you have behaved. You have been extremely antagonistic, rude, and condescending to me and others :( Perhaps it's not a problem of us being sensitive but you lacking sensitivity. You seem just as easily peeved (e.g. you got disturbed by someone calling you "dude"!)
Well Len, you did not seem to have read my post correctly since you did not quote me right. Now, it's not my fault, so don't blame me.

I'm Canadian... yeah, a crazy cannuck like you guys like to call us. If that can make you happier. On the other hand, most people here are not really ... how should I put it... fond of you guys and your ways. Different people, different strokes I guess. But don't get me wrong here. Not all americans are self-centered and easily offended. Not all Canadians are as out spoken as I am either.

Anyway,, I'm here to help people, not talk politics. People that step on my shoes will be stepped back on. That's the way I am. I think I can bring a good contribution to this board if some people would open their mind a bit. I try to do the same and I have let go some sh*t in the past. But I draw the line here. Respect is a 2 way street.

Some people might not like the way I express myself. Sorry, that's the way I write. I'm not english, I'm french, so english is a second language to me. Being of a different culture, I lack the "ways" you people chat together. The only thing I can say is that I finmd you guys to be rather thin-skinned and easily offended.

That being said, may we move on?

Sponge, the way I see one of your problems is: you not only are comfortable stereotyping but you also unescapably view the world through your preconceptions. Show me where any of us have been easily ticked off and I will show you one of your post where you have done the same. We are not as different or bad as you have prejudged us to be.

Respect is a two way street, but you've demonstrated very little respect to your fellow hobbyists in the threads you've recently partipated in. It is usually you who starts the thread going in the wrong direction. A lot of the things you say you aren't or that you dislike about others .... it would serve you well to reflect on your own actions.

Anyways, I've addressed some relevant points regarding the thread's topic; feel free to address them at your leisure.

See what I mean... you are not even consequent with the theories you say are valid. In case you didn't know, CO2 has a greater molecular attraction for water than O2. That is why we need surface agitation to make the CO2 go away. Now, you are saying that injecting air from the room is a great way of aerating the system... yet you suspect that the air is deprived of O2 and contains a lot of CO2 due to lack of aeration of the house as stated and maintain that it's a valid theory. Aren't you shooting yourself in the foot here?
Nope, you're just not following. Often in-tank CO2 levels can be lower than ambient CO2 levels (in the room). The skimmer can help blow-off the excess CO2 in the tank thus correcting/stabilizing a low pH situation in that case.

If the cause of the problem is excessive ambient CO2 levels (in the home), the skimmer won't be much help unless the air intake is plumbed outside (or maybe to a better ventilated area of the house).

If you read the article Guy referenced a few pages back by Randy Holmes-Farley you'll get a better understanding of common causes/cures for low pH problems.

Hi Sponge,

Can you show me where anyone suggested that the air is deprived of O2?

Darren

I agree with ctgretzky99 & Omni2226

Having never kept any fish prior to my first 180 gal reef i found this forum to be a great value, and would have dropped several clangers if it wasn't for this board.
It's a new setup so don't worry, enjoy the ease and shallow dent in the wallet, because if you get as big a case of tank envy as i did watching Louey's new system unfold.
Read, Read and Read some more, ask opinions and for advice, all this you know to do already, we love to give our advice be it good or bad depending on your situation/setup then apply the way you would like to go with your system.
The wealth of knowledge from people on this board is massive, Len, Guy, ChrisRD, to name but a few, their tanks speak for themselves and their advice is given never forced.

Hope this helps

Anton

G'day,

it would not allow me to PM him, when I tried it took me to the forum index, tried 3 times, wondering if he has switched it of?

ok as for ph, placed a small powerhead near the surface should have excellent gas transfer now , ph still the same, however its been stable at 7.9 and thats a good thing in a new tank i guess, will see how it goes in the next few days :)
