A Little Annoyed!

I am just wondering...

Since everyone is saying that it will be packed and the "fire code" and such. What happens if the room fills up? Will people with paying tickets not be allowed in???

I read earlier that children are free and do not need tickets, what is to stop a person bringing their 3 kids. If a bunch of people bring a bunch of kids it will fill up quick. One person posted that they are going to bring about 7 students.

I would be really annoyed if I was told I could not go in because the room has too many people in it..

Just a thought?

The amount of tickets sold is in direct correlation to the fire code occupancy laws. This includes any vendors and staff that are in attendance.

Can't wait. This will be my first swap. Gonna find a suitable cooler and hand warmer packs for the event. Anything else you guys think I will need?

cash....think of a number that you feel comfortable spending and then bring 50% more but do not bring credit cards and do not use pp on credit.
i have seen pp and credit card bills more than 5x of what i thought i would spend.
oh and don't forget gas money to go home.....since you would/should have left all the credit cards at home....lol.

If you buy a ticket you will get in. This is exactly why we don't over-sell the room and why, as Chief said, we also account for vendors, their workers and other VIPs in our numbers.

Thanks Tom. I suppose I have the willpower not to spend too much. I have a little thing called a fiance who will be with me. I can always blame a purchase on my daughter if need be.

Still trying to figure out if I should drive or park by my job in the Bronx and take the subway in.

The vast majority of vendors deal in corals ( there will be literally thousands of frags in the room) and other inverts like clams and shrimp and snails etc. a few will have some fish and on occasion there is even a primarily fish oriented vendor ( doesn't appear to be this time around). A few weeks before the swap you will see members start posting their swap for sale/trade threads where you can pre-arrange deals with other members. In addition, MR has selling tanks at the front of the room where we sell/auction/raffle off livestock that has been donated by members, vendors and other benefactors. If you are looking for something specific, you can always try to pre-arrange something with one the swap vendors. Non-swap vendors even if they are MR vendors are not permitted to sell or drop off goods at the event.

Personally, pre-arranging too much stuff takes a lot of the fun out of the event and I'd MUCH rather trade with fellow members than buy from them. The vendors deserve your $$$$-- they work hard and support the site.

im interested in this event what exactly goes on, is it like a bunch of vendors with tanks setup selling stuff cheap or?

yes and lectures and workshops and raffles and auctions and lots of fellow reefers all in one place. "Cheap" is a relative term, but certainly there is plenty of stuff available in all price ranges.

Perhaps the in the future, the first post announcing a reef swap should be more informative and noob friendly. A few of us are obviously clueless about what to expect at the swap being new to the community... Tips like "bring a cooler" should definitely be included in the first post (glad I picked that up from one of the responses here).

Is there anything else we should consider bringing? Do most or all vendors typically accept credit cards at the swap? Or should we carry cash?

Is it acceptable to do stuff like bring baggies of chaeto to give away for free... or would that be offensive to vendors? I know I had a hard time finding it when I was new to the hobby, so I'd like to help some people out instead of tossing it in the trash all the time...

Most vendors accept credit cards and paypal on site. There is also an ATM machine about 10 steps from the venue :). Free stuff is always welcome and encouraged. You can drop it off at the MR bins at the front of the room.

As we get closer to the event we will post all kinds of useful information for attendees.

i may also be able to get a bunch of mangrove seeds as well that i could also offer, i find a lot of people seem to be looking for them often.

FYI

We will be a vendor at the swap. We accept credit cards and cash. Also, we will be giving away insulated frag totes that will hold at least 6-10 frags or more. We will be taking preorders prior to the swap, this is an advantage for everything we sell especially live rock since we do not charge shipping and box charges on any preorders. As far as what we bring to the swap to sell, we bring clams, designer Clownfish pairs, frags and colonies of every imaginable coral, and more, and they are priced specially for the swap. We will be bringing our Real Reef manmade live rock for folks to hand pick-this is really nice rock and you can see it for yourself and we will be offering it at a special swap price too. We will be bringing more and different stock than we have in the past to this year's swap. If this is your first swap you will be in for a treat. The vendors such as ourselves usually bring their best stock and it is attractively priced at the swap and we bring a huge variety and you can see it all first hand and not have to pay for shipping. Best advice is to get there early because there is usually a mad rush for the choicest pieces, but knowing this we bring enough for everyone even if you decide to come later in the afternoon.
