Kaozgrunt,

Because it has been attempted Many many many times. Everyone thinks they are the exception to the rule and if they try real hard they can keep a mandarin in a small tank.

The outcome is always the same. Mandarin = dead.

That's about the only thing you could do that's worse than trying to keep him alive in a 6g nano. They are not native to that area and animals should never be dumped back into the ocean in a non-native area.

really?? i had no clue. lmao

WES, BEERFISH
Have you done the experiment? or are you saying or repeating what you have read?
I am not putting your knowledge in question, I just think attacking this guy is not going to solve anything.
Provide him with information and let him make his choice.
Like I said, I want to see the outcome and learn from it.

Ummm...

Alot of threads on mr usually do and very fast.

Anthony, they usually DON'T. A LOT of the other sites have threads that read like this, NOT usually MR. There is usually a strong sense of community here! Hydrozzz does know what he is doing-we have talked for hours. He is NOT a noob. When he started this tank he knew exactly what he was doing weeks before he even bought it-I know because we discussed it and he explained to me in detail what he was planning. I noticed that almost EVERYONE has chimed in on this thread- some of the vets and some noobs and some in between. EVERYONE PLEASE try to keep MR different from the other "Flame War" sites, it is counter-productive and diminishes the community spirit. I made plenty of mistakes when I started, and I am sure most of you folks did too. We all learn from experiences, our own and others, so let's try to stick together and not be negative or divisive.

Well, everyone thought the earth was flat for many years until a "lunatic" said it wasn't and now we have satellite pictures to prove its round. Everyone in the reef community follows what they read from "experienced" or previous reef keepers, the way to improve or find new ways is to experiment, you will always experience loss and gains.

Hydrozzz, do what you have to do but at the end just be truthful and if the fish or anything else dies just be honest about it and let us know.

This thread caught my eye because of the size of the tank, for MANY years I was told you couldn't keep a reef aquarium under 50 gallons, and now a days I see them in 10 Gal. (how would we know that if not by experimenting?)
if he dies i will let u know. i know the odds are stacked against me (seriously)! i have been having a little fun with this argument and im doing some things that have worked before and if i notice that he wont make it i will find a better home for him. but the last 3 days he has thrived and there with no signs of stress

I haven't tried drinking nothing but saltwater, or staring at the sun, and don't plan on experimenting there either. This is a generally accepted fact.

I have made mistakes, and I have learned from them. I have also learned from others mistakes, and not done things that other people have proven are likely to fail.

If he had initially posted that he had cycled the tank for 4 weeks, checking levels as he went, and started breeding pods while he was cycling, it would be a different story. If he knew what he was doing weeks before he started it, why didn't he know that his "spotted goby" was a mandarin?

This isn't a "flame war". It's experienced reefers telling another reefer that this is not the way to do this, and him telling everyone that he knows better.

EXACTLY!! "Generally accepted fact" and that's by the ones who are not willing to risk something to get something else in return.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

By the way did you know that by drinking saltwater you'll remain hydrated for a longer period of time....
(By this statement I don't want people to start drinking saltwater, this is done for survival purposes)

Actually I've been through S.E.R.E. training and you're wrong on the saltwater. It's considered the absolute worst thing you can do in a survival situation.

Ok so we move on to cycling, I'm pretty sure 6 gallons will cycle a lot faster than 72 gallons, especially if you boost it with certain additives.

People are too quick to add tittles, unless someone here has a PhD in marine biology, you are just someone with a tank.

Is this really what this forum has come down to, repeatedly bashing other members. Hey we've all made mistakes in this hobby and we all learn from them. Ive been in the fish business for 10 years and trust me ive seen some stupid sh*t but this is not, by far, the stupidest thing ive heard. Maybe the mandarin will live maybe it wont, its no different from buying a rare fish or coral you live and you learn. And Beerfish knowing latin names doesnt mean you know your stuff, im not calling you out but i think you shouldve taken a different tone at the beginning of this instead imparting your "wisdom" on this situation.

Put this crap in the waaaahhhhh thread and grow a thick skin.

You are calling me out and I don't care. I'm sick and tired of people posting incoherent nonsense on this forum and no one calling them out.

Waaaahhhhh... his tone hurt my feelings. GROW UP!
