  1. "New" reefer reefs a reef

I rinsed the heck out of my aragonite and it still created a 72 hour milky calcium storm. Don't freak out ... it'll settle in due time.
  2. update on color loss to corals

Six degree daily swings is pretty large and could definitely effect coral vitality. Good to hear you found the root cause.
  3. Skimmer analysis article

Yeah, it's technical reading. But at least he's thorough and scientific :P
  4. Skimmer analysis article

It finds that there appears to not be very major differences in TOC removal. But different skimmers could effect the tank differently beyond TOC, so I wouldn't rule out a nicer skimmer. What I mean by nicer is one that pulls more air (I do not believe cone shapes, diffuser plates, etc. make a...
  5. Skimmer analysis article

In case you guys didn't read this article yet, it's an interesting follow-up to last February's skimmer analysis. Another skimmate (not skimmer) analysis is coming next month too: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2010/1/aafeature Dr Feldman is reading and responding to the comment section, so...
  6. plastic trim rings FISH TANK NEED BAD PLEASE HELP SOMEONE

Hi dusty, I've moved your post to the main discussion forum. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anyone that sells this type of products. Also, for a tank that size, it's usually a trimless design.
  7. LED Lighting

Excotic has some LED lighting products now that are pretty neat. They aren't bright enough to compete with MH, but they would make interesting options for lower light applications. Plasma lights are promising ... if they can get rid of the heat. Those things are insanely bright (and...
  8. Macroalgae for Sale

Hi! So this will be open to everyone (kind of like frags.org)?
  9. LiterMeter III tubing

Silicone is very flexible. It can stretch to 2 times its original shape and return to form. It should work just fine in your Litermeter. Silicone tubes are used for this purpose. My guess is it's 1/8" ID and 1/4" OD. I don't know for sure. You can try measuring it.
  10. LiterMeter III tubing

Like I said, I think Spectrapure units come with Latex, which is cheaper. But silicone should be the most popular tubing material for medical and lab equipment since it's durable and inert. It's what I'd replace it with too. I realize USplastics is not a cheap solution, but neither is...
  11. LiterMeter III tubing

Silicone has the longest service life and is the most chemically inert (though it sounds like you're just passing water through it).
  12. LiterMeter III tubing

I think (am not 100% sure, so double check) the LiterMeter uses Latex tubing for their pumps. You can get bulk spools of them for like $30 per 50 feet! http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.a ... &catid=623 Usplastics also sells silicone tubing if that's what Spectrapure uses. Silicone is the...
  13. My 52x28x28" 176 gallon (re) build thread

Yeah, I put the rubber feet on. They don't seem very elastic though, so I don't think they absorb too much noise ... just enough to keep the plastic from hitting the glass and prevent the unit from slipping. What I hear is the mechanical whirling sound. I have it on pulse mode, and it makes a...
  14. New lighting?

With 12", MH is very iffy. Heat will be much more of an issue, and there is an increased risk of damage and electrical hazard. I'd stick with T5s like you planned.
  15. New lighting?

Your best bet is two sets of 36" T5s. That will cover your entire tank, but it does increase the cost significantly. You can go with 4' bulbs too, running them staggered to give you more coverage (the center area for higher light corals). T5s will give you a bit more light, save you a little...
  16. My 52x28x28" 176 gallon (re) build thread

I installed the Tunze pumps and Vertex Alpha skimmer over the weekend. All in all, I'm pleased. My goal was to make the tank quieter, and these have definitely worked to that end. The Alpha is as quiet as I can imagine any skimmer can be. The Tunze, make a bit more noise then I was hoping...
  17. Need a new skimmer

He's looking for a HOB :P I'll be impressed seeing a CS6-2 modified as a HOB :D Anyhow, the Octopus has a very nice Sicce pump, but I don't know how the rest of the design is. They're close to your $200 budget, so I'd look at reviews for them as well. The Warner is definitely a nice HOB from...
  18. HI again everyone!

Hey b, good to see you again. My tank is churning nicely. I'll take new pics and post them to my build thread later this month. I just installed a new skimmer and Tunze streams.
  19. Any experience with Odontanthias borbonius?

Yep, their hermaphrodites. I bought two juveniles, and one stayed tiny (<2") while the other grew to 4". I don't agree with that article's comment about aggression. Granted, I have a fairly large tank, but I know others keeping trios in <80g and they behaved well. The caveat is all of the...
  20. Phosphates

Your RO will take out about 98% of phosphates, but that last 2% that gets by could contribute to cyano and algae. When my DI resin is getting old (TDS > 2ppm), I do see more algae growth. Therefore, I would recommend you add a DI stage. It'll take your RO's TDS down from 10-20ppm to 0...
