I havent dove with a BC since 86 I dive dry and the type of diving we did in and around NYC made a BC or any other buoyancy device a hindrance

havent been in the water diving since 7/02

I dive dry as well, but love the backplate. It usually adds just enough weight that I can dive with no weight belt. Not an issue with steel doubles, but nice with a single tank.

I hear what you're saying though... I've done a lot of marina dives for commercial purposes and extra equipment is annoying. Then again, so is the 6" visability (on a good day) at the piers.

I'm so used to no visibility it isnt funny my definition of visibility is much different than most I do have to say I was in the Hudson around the statue for a small plane crash I guess around 2000? and vis was awesome plane was in about 12 feet of water and I saw it as soon as I broke the surface.
there is some good diving around city there is a nice pile of rocks in about 15 feet of water right off bay parkway that is loaded with tropicals last week in July

I would strongly suggest a dive a Dutch Springs to get everyone used to Northeast conditions. It's not a bad road trip, and makes for an easy refresher dive.

I may be in for a trip out there since it's been awhile for me. Need to get my gear tested and serviced first.

very good place and good idea, water real cold but real nice to see a school bus and plane when diving. Lets think about this one

In another month or two, the water isn't too bad. The first thermocline is possible in a heavy wetsuit during most of the summer. The second thermocline I won't dive below even in a drysuit.

The cesna is a great place to practice basic skills and run a reel. The helicopter is great practice for bouyancy control, and a quick stop on the platforms can get everyone comfortable with basic skills.

I see a lot of people asking where they can get certified in our area. I currently work for a dive shop. It's on city island. The name of the shop is Captain Mike's. If anyone is interested in outing a group together let me know. I'm sure i could get you guys a good group rate. I'm just about at my master certification.

Well in my experience the weight like you said and I find it harder to get buoyant for new divers. But then again if they are going to dutch as there very first dives then they would have nothing to compair it to lol.

I find that if you're properly weighted, bouyancy isn't an issue. I've also found that probably 90% of divers use way too much weight. Once you're under the water, weight is less of an issue. If a diver is trained properly on how to decend, they can drop a ton of weight off their belt and enjoy their dive a lot more. I've dove in saltwater and fresh water with my backplate as my only weight.

Most instructors will overweight their students to make things easier in the beginning, but never explain that they need to make their own determination about weight later on. I've seen guys my size and build with 20lbs of weight more than I use.

Well I was thinking not to go with people who are not certifeid but at least with people with 20 dives so we dont have problem finding a spot,
Dutch is all around good place and if some nebbies wanted to come its might be good for all. What you guys think?
What spots you know that is good in NY camanuch? Any in city Island??

There are a couple of spots I have for lobster dives. More rock formations and places to see fluke, big striped bass pass by, blue fish, etc. But I think dutch is a good spot to get a feel for everyone's comfort level.

The offer was just put out there so that people can get certified.. ill get a price from my boss for everyone.
