Anyone else brew their own beer at home (I know Beerfish does)? I got a kit for my GF last month and we just bottled our first batch last night. It's a small 1 gal kit and we're already thinking of upgrading lol. Just curious how many people on here are into this other hobby?

Jarrett: Yeah she's ok lol. She was asking for it for awhile and it's become a group project. We spilled a little while bottling and the dogs realized they love a good porter before we could get to it.

The current batch is a chocolate maple porter and it smelled awesome while we were bottling it. Next one is a mustard brown ale, but I think after that we're going to try and come up with our own recipe (after we do a little more reading).

Quang: Mine was from Brooklyn Brew Shop and I got it at the Brooklyn Flea. Pretty nice for a 1 gal kit and the instructions are pretty straight forward. Is that the one?

Beerfish: I know about the hops, thanks for looking out. It was literally a small spill on the floor, hardly enough for a "party foul" lol. By the time we looked back the little guy had it cleaned up. I'm pretty sure he liked it too.

Yep that's the one. Their stall at the Christmas market was always packed.

Chocolate is bad for dogs in high quantities too, right?

I'm hungover. :headache:

ooh can you pm me the exact recipe for the dog biscuits? =)

You can use the spent grain to make dog biscuits though. I mix the grain with peanut butter, eggs, flour and water then bake for a long time. The dog goes nuts for them.

is there anyone close to central jersey who does this??? i'd like to learn first before i buy anything... like a group project? i will help! =)

I'll look for the recipe I use for the dog biscuits and post it later.

Beer brewing isn't hard at all as long as you sanitize well. I've had some batches that everything went wrong on and they turned out fine. When something goes wrong on a one gallon batch, it's usually easy to fix quickly. When your mash tun drain clogs on a batch with 9 gallons of water and 20 lbs of grain things get a bit tricky!

It is an addiction though. I went from 5g batches and bottles, to 10g batches on a semi-automated rig, a stainless conical fermentor and a ton of kegs. I have a fridge just for hops, and my actual fridge has a ton of yeast in it (and some hop overflow). I also buy about 200 lbs of grain at a time now.

With the stainless fermenter, the valve that's higher up on the cone is enough to clear the trub and the lower one is for cleaning?

The upper valve is for racking to kegs or bottles and has a rotating arm internally to avoid picking up trub. The lower valve is for dumping trub and collecting yeast.

Tomorrow I'll be cleaning a couple of 30 bbl fermentors. That's not nearly as easy.

I think I'll try the 1 gallon kit to start with... Tripel most likely =)
so the kit has everything I need? I don't need to buy anything extra right?

It's really not that hard, and the kits Quang and I got are pretty nice. Every bag of ingredients has it's own recipe on their website, so it's great for starting out. Plus, they have a bunch of really interesting flavors and types of beer so you should be able to find something you like.
