heres another story since we'r on crazy lottory stories:
my ex-boss always buys lottery with the same set of numbers below:
#,#,#,#,#,X
X=wife's age
well, 1 day when he checked, he realized 1st 5 #s hit. the last # missed by 1. the last # was just 1 bigger.
he still won $ but that last 1 made a big diff. n only missed by 1. it was sure hard to handle.
when he told his wife, she hit him over the head. guess y?

he forgot her birthday just passed. :banghead:

LMAO!

IMO the $20 was an insult. Better off giving nothing or give at least a few hundred. The $20 just shows what a cheap SOB you are.
It's kind of like the few times I was very unhappy with the service at certain restaurants. I left giving absolutely no tip. I would feel cheap giving a 5% or 10% tip. I would rather not leave anything just to let the server know just how bad they sucked :) (normally I tip 20%)

I was recently told that if you have bad service, you should leave exactly an 8% tip. Waiters and waitresses are taxed based on a percentage of the gross sales of the restauran. So, if you leave 8%, you're leaving exactly enough to cover what they will be taxed on. Any less, and they're being taxed on money they didn't earn.

IMO, and being in the buisness for 30some years. You should have told the server that the service was terrible, because they still just think your cheap!!! Kinda passive aggressive NO? Plus the bad service may have been beyond the servers controll. JMO

But back to the lotto dude. Kinda Cheap, But at least the thought was there

Lissa,
and what about all of the "cash" sales that aren't reported to the government? The only one getting screwed is the government and not the "poor" waiter. I agree that if the service sucks a waiter doesn't deserve a penny.

They knew I was unhappy with the service, especially when I went to the front desk to ask for my check when I couldn't find the server. You're right though, it would be better to tell the server they suck....I guess :)

Even a bill is paid in cash, there is a still a sales ticket. It's the gross sales of the RESTAURANT that are supposed to be reported - not the credit card slips from the waiter/waitress. If restaurants are doing under the table accounting, that is another story.

Personally, I think servers should get paid a proper wage then a tip would actually be EARNED and not pretty much mandatory.

I am sorry but I have to say that you don't know what's going on in the RESTAURANT business. It's very hard for the government to audit a restaurant. My older firm had many restaurant in NYC owned by very famous people and you have no IDEA of what goes on with cash businesses.

I'm sure you're right. My only point was that there is a way to make a point about bad service without leaving $0.00. Waiters, waitresses and bartenders rely on tips in order to make up their salary.

Well you could still leave them a penny. And you know even if they didn't get enough tip, the restaurant or bar is required by law to make sure the staff get paid at least minimum wage. I.E. minimum wage for people earning tip is i think 3.80 an hour however if after tips is calculated they're only up to 4.80 an hour the restaurant/bar is required to make up/pay the extra 95 cents an hour (If minimum wage is 5.75 an hour, I forget). And I'm sure servers pay a regular w2 like you or me (that is unless they're paid cash). It doesn't depend on how well the restaurant/bar actually does. So it doesn't matter how much you tip them, they still only get taxed at their blended rate on the income earned (23% of the 8% tip you left goes to uncle sam, the rest goes in the waitstaff's pocket).

Umm guys...................................................Lottery?

Yeah back on point it's his money, he needs to look out for himself first. Hey what if he was just laid off and has a massive mortgage to pay off and kids to put through college?

I really don't think calling this guy cheap is really fair, for only a 278 thousand win.

Brendan, I'm going to take this opportunity to go off topic a little :)

I see threads like this one and other on reef related topics that go off topic a little only to have them edited by a moderator. Is this part of the Manhattan Reef rules? IMO threads that go off topic (as long as no bickering is going on) are FINE in a discussion forum. In some situations other good topics of discussion can be raised. I also find it insulting to have posts edited, with no notice, that DO NOT break any rules, just because a mod has a difference of opinion. Just curious what your thoughts are on this issue.

Anyway, don't play lottery :) You have much better odds of winning in the casino.

ONLY! :Yikes:

Yeah in the grand scheme of thing 278 thousand is really not that much. Consider it takes about $1 million over a life time to raise a child (born - 18). Also consider top jobs pay that much in just a couple of months. Another consideration you could hardly buy a single house with that kind of money now.
