I'm going to relay the story that was just told to me by a Police Officer in a 7-Eleven. You post your thoughts / reactions.

A 7-Eleven in NJ dished out a lottery ticket to someone that paid out $278,000. Apparently the person who won was apprehensive about buying a ticket and was convinced by the 7-Eleven Cashier to give it a shot. The person won the $278,000 and returned to give the cashier $20 for convincing him to buy the quick pick ticket.

well let's think about it this way...the person buying the ticket was apprehensive of gambling so the money he wagered paid off, otherwise he would have lost. In that view we know the person was "tight" on the money, so what ever the cashier got was a gift, it's better than nothing...but it was chinsey for a thank you, $500-$1000 would have been more appreciated.

It may have been better to give a huge hug and a thank you rather than $20. If cash was the thank you path I chose I also felt $500-$1000 would have been more appropriate.

I told the cashier if she pulls me a $278,000 winning ticket I'll give her $5,000 :)

You know all you guys calling this person cheap is the reason why the majority of people winning the lotto wind up worse off, than they were before, in 5 years. You're forgetting that half of that is going to the tax man, this person peobably has bills to pay, and should pay before doing anything else with this money. And in these uncertain times, where this person may be in an industry that could be getting the axe, it's very wise to save for a rainy day. If it was 278 MILLION then I would consider giving the cashier a bigger tip.

Being a lottery retailer, I have experienced the entire spectrum.... from people who win and dont even say thank you to those that have given me a very nice tip, and the way I see it is that they honestly don't have to give me anything although it is very nice when they do :D
I sincerely believe that beyond 'karma', a person should treat others in the same way in which they would like to be treated themselves ...its the christian thing to do :)

IMO the $20 was an insult. Better off giving nothing or give at least a few hundred. The $20 just shows what a cheap SOB you are.
It's kind of like the few times I was very unhappy with the service at certain restaurants. I left giving absolutely no tip. I would feel cheap giving a 5% or 10% tip. I would rather not leave anything just to let the server know just how bad they sucked :) (normally I tip 20%)

Its very easy to judge a story without knowing all sides. Maybe the cashier was a jerk? Maybe the guy made " cheapo " cracks at the customer because he said he doesnt want to spend $1 on a lotto ticket? Maybe all he had was a $20 and came back later with something more.

booze, enlighten us. We know that the retailer 'wins' when a winning ticket is sold. How much would the retailer get on a $278,000 prize?

I also know the clerk was probably not the retailer, but an employee and received none of the retailers share of the bonus (for lack of knowledge of the proper term).

The winner going back to offer the clerk a thank you could be conceived as cheap on a number of levels. So no matter how much he/she gave, it might not have been accepted as 'enough'. $20 does seem low on my standards though ;)

The guy is so cheap when he walks his socks squeak. Nobody says he had to give the cashier a grand or two, but how about a hundred?

$0 :tongue1:
This is actually a rather sore subject for many NY retailers. The retailer gets nothing as far as a bonus for selling any winning lottery ticket except for the megamillions. For the megamillions(which is a multi-state game) the retailer recieves a $20,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. New York is the only state to do this while other states that belong to the megamillions give the retailer who sells a winning ticket as much as 2% of the prize money. Considering that the jackpot routinely exceeds 100million, that can be quite a nice bonus :tub:

What I'm more concerned about is where the lotto profits end up. The legal rational behind allowing this state operated gambling racket was that the profits would go towards funding education. The only education I could believe its been going to is perhaps teaching politicians children how to make an easy buck. I believe a large part of our current budget deficits can be directly attributed to corrupt politicians - both those who steal directly and those who turn the other eye for other people to steal.

The only "real" input I could provide is the women who was handling the register is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I have been going to that 7-Eleven for 2 years. She has given me breaks on items and even gave me free lunch once when I left my wallet in the office. I returned later that day to pay for the food (a slurpee was included of course) and thanked her but she refused to take a penny.

Knowing her is what makes me think the guy was a cheap bastage. If she didn't convince him to buy a ticket (I'm sure she was super respectful as she always is) he wouldn't have a $1. After taxes he had at least $143,500. Like I said ealier, if he offered nothing more than a huge hug and a sincere thank you I'd be cool with it. Offering $20 (a little more than 1% of the winnings after tax assuming 50% goes to the gvt) is insulting. Poor judgment IMO.

Booze, is it even possibe for her to know who won if he never said a word?

X=wife's age
well, 1 day when he checked, he realized 1st 5 #s hit. the last # missed by 1. the last # was just 1 bigger.
he still won $ but that last 1 made a big diff. n only missed by 1. it was sure hard to handle.
