I know this topic was just beat to death. Now that the holiday season is upon us, I'm just wondering if anyone has some new purchases they'd like to share.

I'd prefer to go with 1080p. Not sure which is preferable, LCD or Plasma. All input (hopefully from experience) is welcome.

Thanks,
swimmer

Go with the LCD. The Plasma still has to many issues..The LCD is the same type they use in laptops it's been proven to work even under some bad conditions..plus if you look at the plasma like in a car race or football game you can see trails at times. the plasma also has a much shorter life span from what I've read 5~7 years and it's done.

If you're not in a big hurry, wait till right after the superbowl. Lots o people 'rent' big screens from large electronic stores and then return them the week after. . .

I'm a big fan of the smaller (~20") sharp aquos. We use a bunch of them backstage and they're great.

My personal opinion is that plasma will eventually be going the way of the dinosaur and Betamax. In the past, refresh rates and truer blacks were only found on plasma t.v.'s. The technology has finally caught up to LCD's making it a much better product. I have had my Olevia 37" LCD for over 2 years now and couldn't be happier with it. I just bought my brother the 47" 1080p LCD for ~$1,200. There are many great deals out there, if you need help locating one let me know.
Or you can just wait for this:

Plasma is not the way to go. I have a 52" Plasma going on about 2 years now and messing up. I wish at the time LCD was more into the market. I recently back in July purchased a 42" LCD and it is doing great...

That Plasma "burning out" thing is from the earliest Plasmas and not a factor anymore. I have (2) 42" Panasonic Plasmas, one is a year old, the other 2 years old. Never any problems / issues.

I'm not saying LCD or Plasma is better that the other but I wouldn't discount one over mis-information.

From what I've read LCD's are better suited to rooms that won't get alot of light and Plasmas are a better choice for rooms that can be brightly lit (sunlight) there is also the viewing angle that comes into play as well...

Just my 2 cents here....

If you are looking for picture quality, plasmas still produce better quality pictures with better contrast ratios that LCDs. As Alexxn mentioned, the "burning out" of plasma is really related to the order models, manufacturers are doing a better job to prevent this from happening. Additionally, plasmas are cheaper by the inch right now.

I have owned both Plasmas and LCDs in the past couple of years. There really isn't much of a difference in picture quality between the 2. The only thing I advise is to stay with the more reputable names (Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Pioneer and Phillips) if you are getting displays of 42" or larger. The budget manufacturers don't handle larger displays well and have a tendency of crapping out.

You can check out this, TV Buying Guide for more info.

Hope this helps.

russ, i purchase a 37" panasonic plasma and i like it.

most of the issues concerning plasmas ghosting, or lcd dead pixel is rare and far in between. for the most part, if these things happen than they're beyond your control and/or will occur years and years down the line when you will probably purchase a new tv anyway.

remember to get the HDMI cable to attach to your cable box or any other devices.

IMO, the most important thing about HDTV, especially the bigger ones, is weather you like the picture on the screen, albeit LDC or Plasma. What I'm saying is the best way for you to make a decision is to go out there and see the TVs, and choose the picture you like most. i know that's hard for you with the back and all, but that's the best thing to do when making a TV purchase.

For the record, I really like Sharp and Samsung's LCDs .... and Panasonics's plasmas.

Just to add. You DO NOT need the $150 monster HDMI cable to have good picture quality, unless you are running the wire more than 12 feet from your cable box or DVD player.

You can get HDMI wire for a under 10 bucks and you get the great looking pictures.

Russ--

welcome to my world! ask anyone who has seen my set up and they will tell you. if you are a gamer then 1080p is the way to go. if you like watching the yankee games in HD and you can actually see the grass on the field growing ( j/K) then get 1080p. at present no one broadcasts in 1080p. but dont fret. the more pixels the better the picture and quality. attached to this post is a pic of my 52" lcd 1080p sony xbr3 with motion movement. it was the top of the line. now the xbr5 is. LOL. can never keep up with technology. its quite expensive. LCD is a lot more reliable then plazma. when you buy a plasma they tell you approxiamtely when it will break down. to me a major turn off. so srew that one. try and get 1080p. 720 is fine but 1080 is the best for a reason. plasmas are cheaper in price for a reason. get the LCD. i would be more worried about someone trying to sell you those monster hdmi cables that i bought. personally i have other hdmi's that work just as fine. do not use component cables. these days you can get a regular hdmi for $25. components work fine but studies show that 1 cable is optimal. and for $25 why not? you have to look at the tv itself before you do anything. sony is the cadillac of tvs and will pay more. all parts are made by samsung. i personally like LG. vizio is fine. if i can be any more help let me know
matt

Awesome info everyone. Seems like LCD is coming out on top. I also like the Sharp Aquos........so far.

The room is in the basement. Lighting will be very dim. So LCD appears to be more than adequate as far as ambient lighting.

I will go with the more budget brand of HDMI cable as per the recommendations.

So far the info has been great. I'll be able to read links later. Can't spend too much time online........Dr's orders.

Keep the recommendations coming.

If your looking for a great quality tv and have some extra cash I would go with the sony xbr4

The image is amazing

The newer version xbr5 came out but there is not much of a difffernce between the 4 and the 5 not worth spending the extra few hundred
