I was going to phone the FAN this afternoon to talk to Mike and Chris. I've got the deal. When Boras exhausts all offers from everyone else, and then as a last ditch effort to extort (j/k) more money from the Yanks, who won't even negotiate, the Yanks should say, yes, we're willing to talk.

They should then offer A-Rod a $5 million raise (which is what they would have offered if he didn't opt out). Leave it at that for a moment. Hear what Boras and A-Rod say, then explain to them the terms. The $5 million raise is based on the salary that the Yanks were paying him this past year. $25 million less the subsidy of $7 million from Texas. So the Yanks were paying him $18 million per. Add $5 million to that and now they'll pay him $23 million.............a loss of $2 million per year. His loss for not even giving the Yanks an opportunity to sign him pre-opting out. Then slam the door in his face and tell him to move on.

What a$$'s Boras and A-Rod are. I hope he has a respectful career, elsewhere. i've lost my respect. A-Rod should have opted out of his contract..............with Boras!

whoever offer him 10 yr, $300 mil is crazy. he'll reach the 800 HR but would never have a ring

he'll get more than that....I have a feeling the world is going to stop for a minute when the details of A-Rod's next contract is released. It's going to be an assinine amount of money.

I'm not exactly happy about A-Rod leaving, but on the bright side, The Yanks plan to sign Gerardi as manager. Mattingly is leaving!!!
Gerardi is a lifetime .220 hitter at best. But he is a champion. Just like Scott Brosis can't hold a candle to the skill of A-Rod, Brosis is a champion. A-Rod and Mattingly (both of which have great personal stats, but never earned a ring) are gone!
The number 23 never should have been retired by the Yankees. He'll never see the Hall of Fame and he'll never see a ring in pinstripes. I'm glad A-Rod has some garbage to pack in his bags.

Chris, some of my sentiments exactly. Not happy to see A-Rod leave, but the way his moron agent is, it makes it easier to see him pack his bags.

I'm very sorry to see Mattingly leave though. I think he should have remained bench coach for Girardi. Next year is going to be a tough one IMO. I think the incoming manager (Girardi) is almost a sacrificial lamb and Mattingly would have been the one to take the reins after the boss and son's can his rear when they go on a major schnide.

Just some thoughts behind the disappointment of the past few days and weeks (since elimination).

Guys,

Why the big deal that he opted out? I would say that he's moron if he didn't opt out. I hope he gets the most money he can, this is capitalism at it's best.

What does he owe to NY? Nothing! If I had the opportunity to keep the next several generations of my family financially stable, I would take all the money I could.

Oh and Duke, bring him to the METS!!!!

someone i work with thinks there is a Mattingly Curse...

Yanks win WS in '82...Mattingly starts playing for the yanks in '83....

Mattingly leaves Yankees after '95 Yanks win World Series in '96...Mattingly comes back to bench coach for 2004....So maybe 2008 world series for the Yankees now that Mattingly is leaving again...

It's the curse of the mullet.

Actually it's curse of Giambino. I think Giambi got one more year left with Yankees, so NY Yankees got a chance to win WS on 2009.

u r right he is right for opting out. but just to give you an idea on how he is. politically he is getting an a$$beating for announcing it during the world series. even MLB is bashing him. let the truth out. all i know is that the yanks should just trade for santana, sign aaron rowand, mo, posada, take pettites contract away and offer him a 2 year one, sign carlos silva, francisco cordero, and keery wood for bullpen help. all that with arods contract being gone sounds a lot better to me.
outfield: damon, rowand, abreu and matsui. infield, cano 3rd base, jeter ss, eckstien 2b, 1b sean casey to a 2 year deal. so pave the way for texiera next year.

The Curse of Donnie Baseball

Less widely known than the Curse of the Bambino, the Curse of the Billy Goat and other baseball jinxes is The Curse of Donnie Baseball. The New York Yankees won the American League pennant in 1981. In 1982, the team called up first baseman Don Mattingly from the minor leagues. His last season as an active player was 1995. The Yankees won the World Series in 1996. Despite such achievements as the American League's batting title in 1984, its Most Valuable Player Award in 1985, and a team record for most hits in a season in 1986, with 238, Mattingly never appeared on a pennant-winning team.

The Yankees never even reached the postseason until his last season with them, 1995, when they lost the Division Series to the Seattle Mariners (after being up two games to none in the best-of-five series), despite Mattingly batting .417 in the series. Aside from that, the closest the Yankees came during Mattingly's tenure was in 1985 (two games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Eastern Division) and 1988 (three and a half games behind the Boston Red Sox). The Yankees led the division by six and a half games over the Baltimore Orioles on August 12, 1994, when the Major League Baseball Players Association went on strike. Bud Selig, then acting commissioner of Major League Baseball and owner of the Milwaukee Brewers, would later cancel the remainder of the season, ending what may have been Mattingly's best chance at playing in the World Series.

In 1997, the Yankees retired Mattingly's uniform number 23 and dedicated a plaque in his honor that would rest in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. That season, the Yankees finished second in the American League Eastern Division to the Orioles, and it remains the last season (through 2005) in which the Yankees did not win the division title. The next season, 1998, the Yankees began a run of five American League pennants in six seasons, ending with the 2003 World Series. With all this talk about curses, it should be noted that notoriously superspicious Red Sox fans began discussing a new "Curse of the B's" after Aaron Boone's dramatic ALCS winning home run put their team to bed in 2003. Before Boone, the names Bucky Dent and Babe Ruth were synonimous with Boston futility. In 2004, Mattingly was hired as the team's hitting instructor. The Yankees were one game away from winning the American League pennant, when they had a historic meltdown, being the first team in Major League history to lose a 7-game series after being up three games to none on the Boston Red Sox, thus temporarily ending all childish talk of curses in "Red Sox Nation". In the next season on the job, the Yankees again failed to win the pennant despite winning their division and having the highest payroll in baseball.

This has led to the suggestion that the Yankees will never win a pennant as long as Mattingly is in uniform. Between their first pennant in 1921 and 1981, and again from 1996 to 2003, a total of 69 seasons, the Yankees won 39 American League pennants, or 56 percent of the available pennants. In the 16 seasons in which Mattingly has been in a Yankee uniform (1982 to 1995 and 2004 to 2005), the Yankees have never won. Unless, of course, you count in the 2000 season, when Mattingly returned to Yankee Stadium to play in his first Old Timer's day.

If you are a Yankee fan, you should blame on Giambi more than Arod. I believe because Texas was paying big portion of Arod paycheck, Yankee was paying Arod much less than Giambi. But atleast ARod had amazing regular season and never got hurt during he was member of Yankees. Big fat loser Giambi was just taking money and got hurt all freaking time. And he got caught for using steroid as well. Giambi should've retired atleast 3 years ago.

BTW, Arod coming to Yankees was like god send for Giambi. If Arod didn't come to Yankees, Giambi should've been the most hated Yankees player beside Pavano. Everyone was focusing on ARod on every move, Yankee fans just forgot about Giambi all together.
