DENVER -- Alex Rodriguez opted out of his $252 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees on Sunday in what appears to be the end of his career with New York.

Rodriguez's decision, announced by agent Scott Boras during Game 4 of the World Series, makes him eligible to become a free agent.
Rodriguez loses the final $72 million in guaranteed salary in the contract, of which $21.3 million was to be covered by payments from the Texas Rangers to the Yankees. New York had said it would not attempt to re-sign A-Rod if he opted out.
Boras said during a telephone interview Rodriguez made his choice because he was uncertain whether Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte would return to the Yankees.
"Alex's decision was one based on not knowing what his closer, his catcher and one of his statured pitchers was going to do," Boras said. "He really didn't want to make any decisions until he knew what they were doing."

aw man, this is going to be some off season

I wish it were going to be limited to the off season. My expectations.....they are a fallin'.

Torre gone.
A-Rod - most likely gone.
Pettitte - who knows
Posada - who knows
Mo - who knows

I think all the teams in MLB should form an alliance and agree not to sign any player represented by Scott Boras. He said A-Rod didn't know what Pettitte, Posada & Mo were gonna do and didn't want to be there without them. BS!!!!!

Argh, I'm NOT happy about this fall already. First round out and now all this crap.

:sad2:

as i said LETS GO METS.anyway thats what happens when you have a egotistical player like arod on your team.waaaaaaah im only going to make 1,000,000,000,000,000.99.i want 10,000,000.99 more.give me a break.who is going to take him for that type of money.he didnt take the mariners anywhere he didnt take texas anywhere he didnt take the yanks anywhere.its all about a team working as 1.all that another team will want him for is to bring attendance up.yanks are better off without him and put more spotlight on a player who deserves it and that derreck jeter.and thats coming from a met fan

Although I thought it was disrespectful of A-Rod and Boras letting the news "leak" out during game 4 of the WS, I think his excuse is a valid one. Who knows where the Yankees are going? Playing the worst case scenario that Pettitte, Posada & Mo leave; who's left? I wouldn't want to be stuck on a team that doesn't have a sense of direction.

Don't forget that the Yankees reportedly made him an offer, five year extension at $30 million a year. So for him to walk away, he's got to have something else to walk into.

What kind of legacy ARod has for all his baseball career? I think this is it,

But now it appears he will leave, with the Yankees joining the Seattle Mariners and Texas as former teams for a player who outperformed all others during the regular season but flopped regularly in the postseason.
A-Rod went 4-for-15 (.267) with one RBI against in the Yankees' first-round playoff loss to Cleveland and is in an 8-for-59 (.136) postseason funk dating to 2004. Even worse has been his postseason hitting in the clutch. He is hitless in his past 18 playoff at-bats with runners in scoring position.

I really don't think Arod fits in any teams that have a potential to go to the world series, like Yankees or Boston. He needs to go to the team where he is the only superstar in the team and the team to have him to sell the tickets. That's why I think ARod fits very well in SF Giants. SF will sell their tickets for next several years if they got Arod and just to show if ARod breaks the HR record.

It is definitely today's news, but I don't think that'll be his legacy. There are plenty of players in the Hall of Fame recognized as baseball's greatest who never even played in the playoffs or won a World Championship. It may be something that will always hang over his head though. He has several years of baseball ahead of him, assuming no injury.

i will answer the question why now? its simple. boras knows that boston was going to sildify the series it was a smart tactic on his. it brings more pressure on the yanks to make up for boston winning the series, it also draws boston maybe into the whole fray of things. it was smart timing on his part. teh yankees should not resign him. i would take my chances elsewhere. we can rebuild this team without him. yes he was instrumental in us making the playoffs this year while in the past he was not.

now as faras where he goes--
the bosox will not want him after the crap he supposedly pulled when they had a trade all set in place. they also will see a finacially better decision in keeping lowell. so forget him. the cubs with there new ownership will be a problem in getting him signed to the numbers that he wants. MLBwill not let cuban go nuts in his 1st year. the yanks are backing out of it. watch i bet he winds up with either the san fran giants or mets. here is why: the giants have let bonds go. they will need a impact player. they know what 1 player can bring to them. now that they have the tittle of having the home run king in there park, they have the very next guy who holds the possibility of breaking that tittle. i also suspect his wife hates new york after the post article. boras is also based out of california. now the mets. the mets will get approximately 20 mila year from citbank for the rights of the name of the new ballpark. they take that add 10 to 12 mila year and offer a 30-32 mil a year contract to arod. arod has always liked the mets since he was a kid. remember back in the day when the mets were courting him. and they have opened up there new network and new stadium. they will have new revenue to spend.
again for all the above reasons , this is the reasons why it was a smart move on boras part to declare it now.
angels yes they can afford him but art moreno i do not think will pay out that kind of money.

as far as the yanks are concerned.
stick to the main course. forget him right now they have to rebuild from within. or trade out to get better players. or you can stay with betemit. either way its ok. i sitll say if we trade we should only get pitchers, ideally a new yankee team would consist of cabrera at 3rd, and texiera at 1st and rowand in center. again ideally, is it likely? no its not. have patience like the kids said and we will rebuild

Mets can get Santana by sending Reyes. And signed Arod for the shortstop. However, I doubt Mets can pay 30+mil on Arod and close to 25mil on Santana. That's little too much money to spend. I really think Arod fits much better in SF Giants stadium.

BTW, if Arod goes to other team, he won't stay on 3rd base. Arod only plays on 3rd base because of Jeter. Who else out there that Arod is willing to give up shortstop position other than Jeter?
