I think having a whistle is a good think too. Chief, I never thought about yelling Fire, but that actually sounds like a really good thing to remember if you're even attacked.
Your keys are your most useful hand held weapon but your voice is your most valuable self defense.
Here's a tip, If someone is bothering you and you need help scream "FIRE" as loud as you can.
Why?
Statistics prove that when people scream police very few if any people pay attention because it is called out too often and people don't take it seriously for the most part.
But by yelling fire 98% of people will stop what they are doing and turn to look and most often times will help and call for help.

Tru that. Whenever I come home late, and living in the Bronx, I walk with a fist-full of keys, one sticking out from between each finger. Incase I get attacked, someone is going to get a pretty bloody punch to the face.
When I lived in Harlem, I used to get my keys out and ready in the subway, before my walk home.
Funny though - since I moved out of Harlem and onto the upper east side, I've met a lot more people who have been attacked. There was a lot more drug crime than violent crime in my old neighborhood (and 95% of the violent crime seemed to be drug related).
