MLB is international sports right now. This isn't just American sports. Players from all over the world playing this game and they are dreamed to come to MLB. As a baseball fan, who care he car speak english or not. He played great and he deserved to win MVP last night. It didn't bother me anything.

It bothers me....you want to play in America...learn the language. Even the latin players i laugh all the time cause they in this country for soooo long and their english sucks...but congrats to Ichiro anyway...arent you supposed to know some type of english to get your citizenship...then again the MLB probably just buys the citizenships for the players...

I think he does speak little english. I do remember hearing him speaking english but I think he isn't too comfortable speaking front of so many people.

Don't badmouth ichiro.. He's one of the smartest (and nicest) players in baseball and contributes a lot to the community in seattle. He speaks english but when he speaks in public he uses a translator because he wants to make sure he isnt misunderstood or doesn't say something unintentionally.

And thank god the NFL has remained american so it is not tarnished by the Ichiros of the world! Dogfights anyone?

BTW, I really believe Ichiro will be signed by Yankees next year. I doubt anyone can afford him. And Yankees desperately need a good throwing arm in their outfield, I believe Ichiro has one of the strongest arm in MLB right now. And he will be great leading hitter for Yankees.

I would think that after 5 or so years playing ball in America he could show a little respect by learning our language. Apparently some people think that is too much to ask.

I can guarantee that he understands the exchange rate between the yen and dollar.

Um... he did learn our language. He just uses a translator when he speaks in public so that he doesn't accidentally say something detrimental to his team.

Why is that a sign of disrespect? Why is the concept so difficult for you to grasp?

I really don't think he disrespect American. And for your information, when he decided to come to MLB, his Japanese team actually offered him more money to stay. So when you are staying something like exchange rate, he actually took less money to get here. And there's few Japanese players did same.

Obviously he is going to get much more money after this year. But that's only because he earned it.
