Well here goes...

I think that if you live here you should make some attempt to learn basic English. It doesn't have to be perfect and who cares if it has a heavy accent, but at least try.

Both my parents have an accent even after 40 years in the country but you can understand them fine. Now my grandmother on the other hand, can barely speak English. How's that possible after so many years in this country?

Steven

Just to answer the last part of your statement (without actually knowing the age of your granny when she arrived here) I'd say the older you are when you come to the USA the harder it is to learn the language.
But I'm with you. It is up to the individual to better themselves and get in track with the rest here. Learning the language should be first in the list.
Having said this and being a foreign myself let me tell you it took me well over 10 years to feel comfortable and IMHO understandable enough with my language skills to address english speaking people with confidence, heavy accent and all.
Just my 2 cents.

This kind of comment is something i can understand. we have to understand that everyone is not born here and can make English our first language. The older you come here makes it harder to learn the language. But then there's those who make an attempt to learn the language and get ridiculed for not speaking it good enough. Now I'm American because i was born here but come from a Dominican decent and can be the first to tell you that most of the people i know that come from the Dominican Republic find it hard to speak the little they know because were to busy making fun of the little they know.Example : Jose Reyes from the NYM.. He did not live in the USA. And we here they should at least try. So he does. And all you here is people commenting how bad he speaks English in the little time he's been here.. And then we want them to try..... Now were do all these baseball players go to play in the winter to keep in shape? P.R. -D.R. Japan. I would love to see how many of them can speak Spanish or Japanese. But remember, they should all know how to speak the language if they want to play there!

this is some really disturbing comment. this is really bringing us back in time again. I'm not going to get started because i will guarantee you this thread would be closed. But it may just be that AMERICANS are not the best baseball players in the world. and sorry to disappoint you, but scout's are not sitting in our back yards looking for our talent. There sitting in other countries looking for the best players in the world. Take away the minority from this sport and you will probably have a better time watching figure skating. The last time i checked this was the USA. A very diverse country that is put together from all great nationalities. I don't care if they can't speak English. There not here to teach my children in school. there here to play baseball and i don't think you need to speak English for that.... Or do you.

When i went to school half my teachers could barely speak english, and i'm sure you kids teachers cant either...do you know how hard that was....

I don't like stomping on threads but things should be thought out first. You don't know a person's previous situation. Wear the same suit to every party and job interview, Can't drink the water that comes out the faucet, No working toilets, electricity is rationed, so your town might not have lights for a day and a half ... and that's not even half.... and then you have baseball, and if you play all that goes away... Do you stop to learn english or do you go see the hitting coach.

english

what's funny is i am not from ny, only been here about 4 yr's and i get asked where i am from all the time. { i have a country accent } to me almost all nyer's dont speak english very well, especially the people from the city, guess alot of it has to do with the area you grew up in, and if the people around you kept alot of their accent. as my daughter pronounce's alot of word's like i do and it drive's my wife nut's. most of you can't even say coffee right or drawer. i took english comp and lecture in college and my english comp teacher was from boston. and anyone thats been there know they have the worst english there is. someone making million's doesn't need to speak english. he can pay someone to do it for him

what difference does it make if they learn English or not? They are not here to speak to u. They are here to play the sport that they like and make their living with.

this thread made me think of the ESPN commercial, the one with the guy talking out of his ass, after learning from savager and pudge that Ichiro speaks english and the only reason he uses an interpreter is so that he isn't misunderstood. the commercial gets even better when the guy is sitting down and the voice is muffled lol....
