i miss the chats on RG

I think we should bring RG back to the way it used to be on the front page. I know it can be done by going old school, but it's not the same.

OK my 2 cents. RG is important to the community, but part of the lack of activity on RG is due to the inception of the RB where people can communicate one on one as much of the RG chatter was anyway. The fighting was annoying, but the real problem IMO was the frequent inappropriate content appearing on the homepage.

Real world example: I work with my son's elementary school setting up 2 marine tanks in the science lab as part of the 5th grade capstone project. They needed to do real research on setting up tanks and I couldn't even consider referring them here. This strikes me as bizarre as we purport to be about promoting the hobby as our primary goal.... and this was AFTER RG was removed from the homepage.

For a reef board, there is unprecedented freedom of expression and great latitude with non-reef related banter here, but does it need to be the first thing people see when they come here? IMO no.

Randy i agree about the content, it's totally understood. However, most of the time it happens late at night when there should really be no kids on the net at 2am for example. But i do see your point. At times i have felt the same way.

How about having the ability to like dock it so that even if you are browsing the site you can keep track of what's going on? With that option it doesn't have to be on the main page, and the member will have the option of having the content displayed at all times.

I'm just trying to keep the fun on the site, this is what MR is known for.

The reefberry is for one on one, not chatting with friends.

ok if we donot know each other what is the purpose of RB.i find that the more we communicate with the whole community the more we feel trust from one another.example, when i first joined i did not know who to take my advise from,but by being on RG i built up friendship with certain members and took all my advise from those people. there are also many arguments that form on these threads which use language that can be considered by a few racey but we dont change this format.plus all the language that is used here i heard by the time i started grade school.lets keep this site a community and not just another web site

I see no problem with that Pedro if it can be done, or just password protected access? I'm not interested in stifling conversation or fun, but I have real issues with foregrounding these as the face of MR.

What frequent inappropriate content appears on the homepage that 5th graders don't talk about or already know? And if they want to do real research have them read a book or articles. Information given on forums are not always correct as you can see.

And I can care less if RG is on or off the homepage.

The RB is kind of cool but so close to PM that, what's the point? It's a pop-up PM without the 30 sec time limit. What was cool about RG is that you could wander into a conversation that you weren't a part of or even listen in on a conversation that you wouldn't have otherwise seen. For example two people discussing LPS etc. A third party has the ability to jump in with "Hey is it true that.." That kind of behavior is "thread hijacking" but in RG 100% appropriate. Another favorite is when there are two conversations going on in RG and a third random person is talking to themselves. I love that.

Unfortunetly at times inappropriate language is used in heated arguments. Perhaps a "ban clock" for trigging certain words. IE if any of George Carlin's famous "words you can't say" are submitted the user is banned from logging in for an hour or two. That should be enough time to cool off or at least learn a lesson.

Why are we bringing up INK again, get over it already hes gone and so is the RG off the homepage... i havent seen any crazy fights actually i havent seen any fights at all on the site to be weary of, maybe we can get the RG back on the homepage for good behavior ...

whatever the case maybe we should all get to vote for the RG to be on the website homepage... i think it should be a community desicion not only a moderator desicion.. fair is fair. We the community make up the site and we should all have a say in it. it was much more fun when the homepage had the RG right there smack on the left :biggrin:, now its :dead1:

Am I the only one that has multiple pages open when I am online?

Put the little RG screen in the top corner & use it like an AIM chat, while you do other stuff.
I've been doing that even when it was on the Home Page.

Yes, it's not promoted or easy to see...but everyone knows its there.

It's a bit more free since it's not being seen on the front for everybody to see.

Whatever ya'll decide.....it's the same to me.

I say leave it exactly where it is right now, I like being able to post stuff and not having the wall break like it used to :irked:

If you want t on the home page there is an option for it to be there, if not keep 2 tabs or 2 windows open.

if there was a way to make the old school sign in a permanent choice for people that would be fine.
don't forget with the new large page the small RG is going to break every time someone posts a link or a photo.

This is how all the mods feel. We discussed this extensively and all came to the same decision.

This is really a double edged sword. I established a repartee with everyone on RG, there's where I "met" all of you guys. Had I only joined this site post RG move I would not have had that interaction and frankly with the activity in the threads I wouldn't be a regular.

I always thought that RG took away from the site because great conversations and exchange of information wasn't documented. I thought that if RG were gone that those conversations would occur in the threads, but they aren't. What made RG great was that it was on the main page. While refreshing the main page to see if a thread had a reply you would catch another conversation of interest.

Our threads are more of;
a question with 20 wetwebmedia responses
Selling *******
and occasionally a great topic

That's the reality (IMO) of the last few weeks. RG was a way of live brainstorming that in my case usually caused me to think and post a thread about it. Now MR has become more of a "move along, nothing to see here" kind of place. RG kept this site live with conversation and topics to think about.

John, yes people could keep an RG window open but they don't. Often 12 hours go by without a post. I agree with the community feel being less with RG not being so prominent. The nudibar is great but RG is where I got to know many of the members here in a way that doesn't exit otherwise.

By RG not being in your face it is hidden. I come on, go to RG, see no posts in 2 hours and I close the window. If I'm only going to be online for 20 minutes why keep that window open?

Like this is all some epiphany ...the moment it was moved, it died down, I mentioned it many times, but certain people have their own designs on what this site "should" be, not what it was ....thats what initial drew in the core people here...if u noticed THATS what is missing, the people who started all this, that made BBQ's and get togethers (i kno we have get togethers, but there not the same as in the past)...when half the site would come by for a tank "raising". or just stop by, (not needing or buying anything)


..some have moved on to others things, and thats good, remember this is a hobby, not life...

but to loose what made this site special, LIKE REEF GRAFFITI ON THE HOME PAGE...this movemnet transended into alot of areas...
...i wonder if its not worth it..or is it too much work...ill be willing to lend a hand, im sure others would too
it needs to be fixed some how, cause its boring as hell!
