Site down again this morning

I know that we were told that the site was moved to a new server. Obviously that did nothing for the performance of the server and the site going down all the time.

I also got a PM from Trana asking me to donate again to the site. I had donated in the past and got my little DONOR icon by my name. Then it disappeared and when I asked why I was told that I need to donate every year to keep the icon.

Then to get asked in a PM to donate again, that is just not right.

MR is not a non-profit organization. Asking for donations is just outright wrong IMO. If anyone actually calculated the amount that the owners of the site make on vendor forums alone, it is obviously a "for-profit" organization. I am not saying that it cannot be and if someone makes money I am all for that. So I am not saying that the owners cannot make money. But I was also told that there are costs to run the server. Yes there are and even if a dedicated server, the costs of the vendor forums (if they are all actually paying) will have no problem at all covering the costs.

Business is business, and making money is part of it. But to ask for donations and then having the site be down alot is just wrong.

If I didn't get the PM asking for a donation this would never have been posted, since the site is free I really cannot complain! But to ask for a donation????

Oh well if that happens then it happens. But that would be disgraceful. People here say crap all the time and offensive sometimes and nothing happens. If I get booted cause of this, that would be wrong.

You get an email reminding you to donate once a year. If you don't want to donate you just ignore the email. It won't ask you again.

The site is free, and we try to keep any sort of "nuisance" messages to a minimum. In fact we really only send emails a few times a year.

I've played around with EC2 and RDS but at the time RDS was not quite ready for what I wanted to do with it.

You're right, you did, and the system recorded the donation as I inputted it manually. I'll look into why your icon is not showing up because everything is set up properly, it must be a bug.

Not quite as simple as that, but we do use a lot of Amazon resources, specifically S3 for daily backups and CDN (via MaxCDN).

I've played around with EC2 and RDS but at the time RDS was not quite ready for what I wanted to do with it.

You should check it out now. They added the read replicas semi-recently to RDS. Then with caching, oh man.

You could do some EC2 scaling and load balancing with RDS back end to spawn read replicas during peak hours.

Im sure MR is a bandwidth black hole.

Thirty5, very good points you make. I've often think of exactly what you said. If people keep donating, the site should be able to stay active like all the time.

It's expensive to run a site this big and for the amount of information that is given you would have to buy 100 bucks just to get an answer that this site gives you in 5 minutes. Josh is doing a good job on this site and everything that is happening is just tweaks to the site. If 1 hour or even 8 hours of this site being down hurts you that's bad your more addicted to this hobby and in need of a intervention LMAO. Just be patient the kinks will be worked out :biggrin:
