Just to clarify I am on no way trying to hurt anyone's business. But how do you figure that it costs a lot to run this site? It is a forum....... the only cost would be the web server for the most part and could probably be run on a VPS. But even with a dedicated server this money the site is making I will bet more than covers the cost of the server. And the mods are all unpaid at least that is what we are told. So how do figure that it costs a lot???

Hmm.. lets see producing a quality magazine 4 times a year, and a daily blog ( those world class writers sure like writing for nothing!), app and data base development, yup that all happens for free, booth rentals and fees for national conferences to establish relationships with those world class writers AND make the connections that yield most of those wonderful raffle prizes come swap time --all free!

My point is, server costs are a fraction of what it takes to continually maintain and evolve this site for the membership. While I am not privy to the books, I do know that a miniscule fraction of the membership donates anything at all. And I also know the things I mentioned above do not constitute an exhaustive list of expenses.

And to be clear, in the face of persistent doubts and rumors the mods and admins are not paid for their work on MR.

If the mods and admins don't get paid, then they are donating their time which is their decision to be made. But once again this is a business, yes they need to make apps, and remember it was a paid app at first not free. The magazine is a good thing, but again I would have to bet that the ads in there are NOT free.

This is a business and if you do the calculations it is a decent one, from vendor fees, to ad fees. Businesses have costs to run them that is plain and simple.

First off, the app never made money. It costed much more to produce it than we would get back by people buying it. So we are making it free with some unlockable sections and also advertising in the next version.

The magazine does not make money, there are virtually no banner ads, and we eliminated the ability for people to buy ads directly in the mag (you have to buy the package which includes Reefs.com, the app, and the mag).

So consider it a labor of love.

Josh,
Please don't take offense to anything. It is not a personal thing. I guess it comes down to asking for donations from a "for-profit" company. I know that this site is not a "gold mine". But then again it def without a doubt pays for itself and then some.

I know that it is the end-users decision to make a donation or not. So each person makes a decision if they want to give. I will never tell anyone not to do it.

It is also apparent that some people on the forums are given more leeway than other people. I know of members who have complained about things and nothing is done. Yet I personally have had posts deleted honestly for no reason (IMO). I am sure that you read a lot of posts, and for the most part this is the only thread where I have be out of the realm of actual tank discussions.

I think that Mods need to enforce the rules of the site across the board, that even means to people that the mods call "their friends:. I have even seen some Mods cross the line, but who is going to handle them?

Ultimately enforcing the rules that are made in the "General Discussion" forum, across the board, will just make this site much more beneficial.

I know that this thread it self has evolved from my first post about the site being down. But I don't think that I have seen at least lately any posts where the members have actually complained about things. I normally do not
post like this. But sometimes someone has to do it.

Ultimately it does not come down to how much money the site makes, or what it costs for a magazine, or who gets paid and who does not. It comes down to a GOOD PRODUCT! Which in the most part MR is, but the bull$hit that goes along with some of it is just annoying. For the most part the stupid posts by people or the annoying signatures that people have (either huge long or just plain stupid [off topic]) I can look past that. But a good product IMO needs to work, and the site being down as often as it is, IMO is not a good thing, especially on a Saturday Morning for multiple hours when people are not working. I like to sit down and have my cup of coffee and just read through the threads. I cannot say how much I have learned from just reading through the threads.

OK, I will get off my soap box now.....

Well, thanks for your input, don't worry you won't offend me! :)

Here is the deal. The outage and the issues we are working on are NOT planned. So saying that it shouldn't have happened on a Saturday is a moot point. We didn't pick the date and time for it to break. On a side note, Saturday is NOT an extremely busy day of the week for the site, but it is important nonetheless.

On a totally separate issue, I do not personally do any moderation and you'd be surprised how little I actually have time to read. We have a great group of moderators, but due to their nature, they all make different decisions on how to handle things. They DO talk a LOT in private about how to handle issues on the board. So eventually they reach agreeement on how to handle situations but sometimes they do not reach in the same way. If some people get treated better than others, there isn't too much I can do about that. Quite frankly, some people have a history of being a PITA and some people have a history of being level headed and cooperative. So when a stupid person does something stupid it is probably dealt with a little bit faster than an ordinary person doing it. If a long time member curses, they get a warning in private and the post is edited for them. For people who have caused trouble before, they can get a timeout and the post is deleted.

If you think you've experienced a lot of BS in the forums, imagine all of the things the mods deal with! We have a few new mods which we're going to announce shortly, and I'm sure you will find that they are the natural selection based on their knowledge of the hobby and their commitment to the community. If you have a problem with something on the site you are welcome to talk to a mod or you can ping me directly.

So now that my previous posts have been deleted because I was not on point. I will restate that mods need to treat all equal and even if their buddy has a signature that is offensive they need to respond in a timely fashion. I know they have the ability to delete offensive lines. We all know what people are pushing the enevlope without real purpose. I'm frankly tired of being deleted for pointing this out. Talk about being censured. There is a difference between censorship and enforcing offensive behavior.

Also, to dispel some other rumors, we cannot look at your pm box. We cannot read your rb's. We cannot edit your avatar. We cannot dose your tank. We cannot mow your lawn. We cannot do your water changes and we don't get paid for moderating. As a matter of fact we donate to the site just like the other donors.

It?s so ironic that my post on this thread was deleted for ?being off point? and something to be discussed with a moderator, yet your sarcastic post is not only posted by a moderator but allowed to remain. How awesome it must be to have the power to delete other people?s posts for arbitrary reasons. So you can?t delete a signature? I find that interesting. So anyone can put any comment they want into a signature and it will okay with you? That?s cool. :lol2:
