jhale said:wow thanks Russ, that is a HUGE tip to know.
when I bought the saw today they showed me how to use it and gave me some tips, but they never mentioned the fuel thing. they did tell me to use high test fuel only, oh well no more reg for my chain saws.
you really have to keep track of your usage then if you can't have any fuel older than 30 days.
No problem. Glad I could offer you the insight, since I just went through it.
Stihl is very embarassed by this situation. That's probably why they don't make mention of it during their sales pitch (makes sense). However, it is not a Stihl generated issue. It will happen with, Toro, Red Max, Husquavarna, Craftsman, etc. It is totally ethanol in our gasoline mixed with 2 cycle engine oil related.
The tech suggested that if I could find a gas station that sells ethanol free gasoline (regardless of grade of gas) to use that. He said that will basically have a shelf life like the gasoline of 'yore'. These problems never happened before the ethanol infusion.
NY passed a law that requires 12 months of ethanol. Just a couple of years ago, it was only used in the winter months.
I'm afraid to start my string trimmer and my chain saw now. Both of those have been sitting since last summer with the mix in them. :irked:
Anyway, glad I could help avert any potential problems. Good luck with it. It's a beaut.
