one thing that can be great help is to keep simple glass covers for your tank. When the power goes out heat can be a problem.. cover the tank and run air stones on battery!
that is what I do
yes I use ElboJager heaters too with 100% sucess. I have also started playing with a new type of heater called "pro heat".. I think they are great because they have a electronic thirmistat control and are made out of titanium so they can't break!
I have seen entire systems lost due to heater...
hahahah.. I could not help but laugh at that last post.. it is so funny but so true. Basicly you can't stop the diggers.. They will dig dig dig and there is no way to stop them.. but the egg crate will stop the deep bed penatration and you can easily hide it when company comes over.
I have...
the big trend in Japan is to use a exotic lighting system "looks like stage lighting" and aim MH lamps at specific corals. They will have 5-10 low wattage MH lamps all aimed at different parts of the tank.. This may become popular in ths US but the relamping cost would suck! It is bad enough...
center braces on tanks are not decoration! you should of seen the galss bow on my 105 after the center brace poped.. I had to use a clamp! Many sps tanks use parameter bracing "looks like a picture frame of tempered glass" so you don't need the center brace. If you can custom order strips...
it is hard to beat the low cost of a iwasaki 6500 MH lamp and a cheep mv ballast. You can diy one of these things for less than 100/250w lamp
I know HQI is better "I have them" but god Iwasaki 6500 setups are cheep and the corals love them.
heh it gets above .030 in honduras.. I have to use a few extra pounds to dive in Utilla.
I have let my rubbermaid systems climb as high at .035 "was a stupid mistake" and suffered no ill effects. I did notice polyup extension was not normal for a few days so I tested it. Soon after that I...
I run MTC beckett style skimmers.
True they are expensive but OMG the skimmit they pull out of the water. I have a HSA 1k and 2k on my 105g and 120g reef tanks.
heat bad, cool good.
use the heatsink
but if you have no space for it.. you can get by.
I have noticed that the VHO ballasts get hotter than the MH ballasts
>> follow my advice only if you want it to be dead sand again <<
I had a refgum problem several months ago and had to tear out 12" deep sand bed out of my 60g corner tank. I usualy take my sand in 5gal buckets 1/2 full and use a sprayer nozel and power wash the sand with fresh water "from the...
I started out with a small colony with three heads. I now have two larger colonies and 20-30 heads. The bottom heads will push out and find light. They don't need direct light to grow. They like gentle soft current and like calcium.
I would see if something is irritating the heads. A crab...
all my 660's have a heat sink. I would think if you are only running 4 lamps or less you could get away with out using it.
I would use it.. heat kills electronic devices.
I had that same problem. I use AC 120mm fans on my system. FIrst I purchased lows noise ac fans and they all used bushing bearings and would fail after about 8 months. THey would still work but would become loud. The ball bearing fans were just too loud until I made a small modification. I...
