  1. A real good question for those who are well read.

I mentioned triggers and wrasses only as a heads up as to the type of fish that I might keep in the future that are critter eaters. The things that make live sand what it is. So you guys think that a DSB is only effective in a reef type tank where the fish load is on the lighter side and that...
  2. Purple and Yellow Tangs Together?

I have two of each in my 250 flat back hex. I plan on adding 4 more Zebrasoma type tangs. Once you have 4 or more Zebrasomas they start to school. You can surely put 2 in a reef, I would go yellow first. Try and get the same size purple later.
  3. A real good question for those who are well read.

Who has used a dentrator? I hear they clog readily, and are nothing more than 50-100 ft of airline tubing. I thank you for the input. If Im not mistaken thay too thrive on anerobic bacteria like a DSB. I would however be avoiding a detritus buildup in the sand.
  4. A real good question for those who are well read.

After 16 years of reef keeping I switched back to a FO(my infant son now has most of my time). I have read pretty much all there is out there, as well as monthly articles. Here is the problem; I got rid of my live rock (and just added a ton of coral skeletons(not the real stuff b/c I care about...
  5. What eats caulerapa.

There are no tropical reefs or tangs in the Mediteranian sea.
  6. What eats caulerapa.

The yellow isnt the best eater, red sea sailfins and purples are better. The other thing is the type os calerpa( however you spell it). The kind that looks like saw blades is to hard to eat, tangs prefer the feathery or grape kind. Unfortunatly they eat it faster than it grows.
  7. SouthDown is down-right filthy!

Well 3 fish died!!!! Adding SD sand unwashed and creating a sand storm is not good. RIP=Annularis, six bar angels, and broomtail wrasse Tangs are ok
  8. SouthDown is down-right filthy!

So where do we get these "sand critters"? Most of the time "live sand" is just bio-activated and not critter activated.
  9. will garlic get rid of ich?

ditto to roach, its a preventative. what happens is the fish digest the garlic soaked food then secrete the garlic through their skin mucus(fish slime). Just like you would smell like garlic after eating it. ich hates bad breath....hahaha
  10. Building canopy for MH: How high for 250s?

How tall is a 135? and what do you want to keep? That should answer your 250 or 400 question. If you go with 400's 12 inches 250's 8-10" from the water. Fans are a must! yes I would keep all bulbs at the same hight. The vho's or PC's are just for spectral balance FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE. 10k...
  11. SouthDown is down-right filthy!

Thanks Katspaw, but I did a small water change yesterday and added a small amount of sand to my tank, 50lb to start. half southdown and half carribsea( to get a mix of grain size). Holly sh-t the southdown made my tank look like milk while the carribsea which went in first did nothing. For the...
  12. 1 foot Queen Trigger needs a home!!!

E SMITH, I dont think he meant locally
  13. SouthDown is down-right filthy!

brad, is the water still cloudy? if not how long to clear up?
  14. SouthDown is down-right filthy!

brad , how long and where did you put the fish when you did this?
  15. Tangs

I would not suggest buying the clown tang. IT WILL DIE, AND YOUR TANK IS TOOOOOOOOOOO SMALL. I have 2 purple and 2 yellows in my 250, and they are doing fine. They actually school. Iplan on adding a scopas and a red sea sailfin. BUT i should be fine. As a general rule you should have either 1 or...
