What are the other fish and quantities on the list? multiple tangs should be at least 3 or over. Your tank size certainly can house about 3-4 tangs, depending on the species and the size you want to get. However water quality always comes first when dealing with tangs.

Just to answer your question, yes yellow and purple can co-exist, provided yellow is slightly larger, and yellow is in first. Purple should go in the last and preferably small. We need to know your tank setup, wanted fish list, and equipments, to offer you the order the fishes should go in.

I missed the last part, "school of yellow tang?" Exactly how many do you have in mind? & How many other fishes do you want to put in it too?

I successfully housed 6 yellow tangs and a purple in a 180 for 3 years. No problems..

In a large enough system anything is possible.

I was wondering your opinion on whether or not a purple and yellow tang could co-exist together. We have just ordered our tank and are putting together a list of fish we'd like to get - so we are in the beginning stages of getting a fish stocking plan together. We are also considering a school of yellow tangs.

Our specifications: 260 g reef tank

Your thoughts? Thanks a bunch

How long is the tank? If it is a long tank as opposed to a deep tank I think it'll be ok as the tangs really need the distance. I wouldn't try it in a thick or deep tank.

I kept both in a 170. Funny thing is that the yellow tang was the aggressor. I finally had to remove him after the purple beat him up a few times. He'd only attack when the yellow got aggressive first. Now I have a large sailfin in with him.

Hey Thanks everyone for your input. It has been hard to tell from literature if the yellow and purples can be kept together. It helps that you have been able to do it. Our tank is will be 7 feet long and 30 inches high - so we figure that should be a good long tank for them to move around.

Do you think there is a signigicant benefit to keeping more than one yellow tang? We've read mixed reviews on keeping them. Numbers wise, we were thinking of just one yellow and one tang - but have heard that we should keep at least 3 to 5 yellow tangs if we are to even consider them.

Thanks for all of your responses.

In that size tank you should be able to keep one of each just fine. Be sure to add them at the same time. If you want to go for a school of yellows you have to have one or at least five in my opinion. Anything in the middle and they just fight too much and get stressed out. It seems to take at least five to put them in "school" mode.

Arent purple tangs from the REd sea and yellow tangs for the Pacific. OR is the Yellow tangs found that far west in the Red sea. I just letting you know (if i am right). Didnt know if you are setting up a so to say mixed reef or a region reef. Just wanted you to remember. Cant tell you how many times i have got a fish home and made the mistake of thinking they were from somewhere else. I would then have to catch the fish and take it back to LFS.

I had a purple and a yellow. The purple was in first and he beat the crap out of the yellow. I added a sailfin and they get along fine. The yellow lived in my sump until I found a trade.

I have two of each in my 250 flat back hex. I plan on adding 4 more Zebrasoma type tangs. Once you have 4 or more Zebrasomas they start to school. You can surely put 2 in a reef, I would go yellow first. Try and get the same size purple later.
