  1. My new favorite...

I started my 55g about four or five weeks ago with 100 pounds of LR from ReefSplendor. I went to pick it up and I watched Dan take the rock, not from his rock curing tanks, but from the tanks he keeps some of his clams and corals in. Needless to say the rock did not need to be cured. Anyway...
  2. small anemone in sand

Could you possibly suck them out of the sand with a siphon? It might not get rid of them completely, but it may thin them out and give yer snails a break for a while...
  3. Southdown in westchester, NY....

Does ANYBODY know where I can get Southdown close to the Westchester area? I've called all the Home Depots in the area and they all say that they have "playsand" but nobody can tell me whether or not it's Southdown. The last time I was there, they had "QuikKrete", it's playsand but I'm not...
  4. wattage per gallon...

Hhhmmm, I see. I was looking into the Prizm Pro, I like it because it's got a media basket, and a drain outlet... but I like the media basket because I like activated carbon, carbon is my friend. I like water changes too, water changes make me happy. Happy fish make me happy...
  5. wattage per gallon...

Thanks everyone, and my question was answered, although it started out as a lighting question. But then again, I've always loved a good tangent... And I'm going with the skimmer. Is it possible to "overdo it" with a skimmer? Or could you run it for periods of time and then turn it off for a while?
  6. wattage per gallon...

I just read Bob Fenner's new book, and he also mentions using high circulation and efficient protein skimming while omiting the "multi-stage filtration". It seems like a sound theory to me after thinking about it for a while. You all have been really helpful, thank you so much.
  7. wattage per gallon...

How exactly would I set up a refugium if my tank is not drilled? I haven't heard very good things about siphon overflows, and I'm reluctant to use them... I would love to have a sump.... I think I'm going to go with the Prizm Pro skimmer... What exactly would removing the canister filter do to...
  8. wattage per gallon...

For filtration, I was thinking of the Magnum 350 canister filter (no bio-wheel), and either the Red-Sea Turbo or the Prizm Pro. Circulation from 2 Maxi-Jet 1200's. Any opinions on skimming options would be great as well...
  9. wattage per gallon...

Lights will be three or four inches off the water and reflectors will be had. Anyone recommend parabolic? Does the whole tank scheme sound okay? Any and all opinions will be taken into account. Thanks everybody!
  10. wattage per gallon...

Sorry for being hasty, I was on my way out... Anyway, tank is standard 55 gallon AGA. 48" long by 13" wide by 21" high. 4-5" deep sand bed, 90 pounds of live rock, 2 ocellaris clowns, 1 royal gramma, 1 neon cleaner goby, and the usual cast of hermits and snails. Lights would be about 3 or 4"...
  11. wattage per gallon...

I was planning on setting up a tank with DSB, live rock, and just a few fish. Would 8 watts per gallon be suitable for adding a few low light corals later on, after it's been established? Thanks to all.
  12. Is this setup okay? SW Newbie help...

Thank you for your info, Seamaiden. I love wetwebmedia.com, spend at least two hours there every night and I never seem to run out of interesting things to read... I went to the bookstore to get Bob Fenner's book, but it was more expensive($50) than I thought it would be and I didn't have...
  13. Is this setup okay? SW Newbie help...

Actually, no one has advised me on the use of a sump, so I'm going to go look it up. I had not thought of adding a refugium, what are the benefits of them other than increased surface area of water? Something to do with nitrites, I think...
  14. Is this setup okay? SW Newbie help...

I'm new to saltwater and I would like some opinions from any who would care to share... Tank will be 70 gallon 50"x18"x18" (DIY). Filter: Magnum 350 canister filter. Skimmer: Bak-Pac 2. Powerheads: 3 Maxi-Jet 1200's. Heater: Ebo Jager 250 watts. Lights: 4 bulb VHO ballast with 48" tubes of...
