Thanks Chief,
2.5 weeks well i am approaching that fast ... we'll see if it lives up to that time frame ...

Mark,
Found an old post after my 65g cleared up, remember what you said, you tried the stuff too!

yup i can vouch for his tank. I couldn't believe my eyes his tank is crystal clear we both tried it and as off today my tank has never been so clearer. I never has the same problem with any algae and I just decided to try it and so far so good i think i will order a couple of boxes of this stuff to use, and just replace it every 2 weeks just for maintenance. Just my opimion! This stuff really works

Mark

As for the ro/di maybe i do need to invest in a new one, or better one, and get a phos reactor but honestly i never had this problem in my first tank setup with strictly tap water, dose random stuff, and used a biowheel with no skimmer (36g) ... never had one problem ... than again i didnt know any better than ... weird :irked:

You could make your own reactor. :scratchch where did I see a DIY thread like that?

With the addition of a phos reactor and some decent sized water changes and media changes and everything else nada on the clear water... My conclusion - being to close to a window (possibly)with just enough sunlight peering through somehow, (even though i made sure my room looked like a dark room these past 3 weeks) still might be adding to the problem.

Also the fact that i have been doing enough research to realize that i could have crazy amounts of phos embedded into my sand bed and rocks, as well as leaching into the water from my carbon could be another reason.. One amazing post i found that was on reefcentral is where they professional tested how phos raises pretty high from the system itself from the (rocks, sand, media) and when a phos reactor was turned on virtually elimanated all these ghosts traces ...

Now im not saying these are the definite causes since most argued that it was phos itself which at this point i am proving not true by eliminating that with no results but its just a strange issue that maybe a combo of alot of things ... the worst part is i did everything more or less like everyone else does when setting and maintaining a tank ... and got some dam good equipment to help run it as well ...

Maybe time to cut my loses and shut her down for good, but no worries here now that the nice weather is among us, and the fact that i am enjoying more this year than ever riding my bike (07 Ninja) seems like the best thing out there. Don't get me wrong love the hobby just not enjoying it anymore with the troubles i am having ... Will do one finally clean up and water change this weekend and see, if not adios Chris5 has left the building

it takes time...you havn't proved it's not true yet.

get someone w/ a hannah meter to measure your phosphate levels. I bet they are alot higher than u think.

you just need to be patient and keep up w/ your maintenance and water changes. It doesn't magically happen in a week.

Just to update and w/o jumping the gun here :

Just picked up a nice UV (thanks Wolverine) and its been running for 10hrs or so ... can now see all of the rocks ... still cloudy but less green ... also running the phos-reactor and carbon, and skimming away ....

At least its not Monster green (fingers crossed) !!!

Chris

I've been reading this thread and just been feeling your situation cause I've pretty much been experiencing this as well. I've recently been using the phos reactor and its been helping a lot but I do have the cloudy white water that just doens't clear up. When i started to use the carbon it cleared the green look but still kept the white water look. I can also see my rocks as well. The only thing I never done which i read through this thred is change my live rocks and live sand that I had for about 2 years. But everything else is pretty much the same scenerio. My RO/I is a 3 stage and I've been really thinking about upgrading it thinking its definitly causing the water to remain white or my salt (reef crystals).

But I do admit the phos reactor and carbon had helped a lot.

Well at least there is someone out there who feels my pain (jk)
Yeah the phos-reactor initially cleared the bad green tint, to a lightly green/white cloudyness .. Didnt do miracles but it helped in a slight way ....
Remember my situation was far worse than i imagined, and it was a repeat of my 65g days (wow was that bad) and i did what you want to do, i swapped out my water completely and sand bed in a single nights work, and guess what it didnt matter one ounce! :irked: :irked:

Fast forward to now, i am really starting to believe its this window the tank sits under .... but the UV now thats its been running for almost 24hrs has cleared the tank to almost 60% better than it was ... i can actually see the entire tank from the front, rocks and all my equipment in the back ... the real test is from the sides and thats not happening just yet, still to cloudy ....
I am figuring at least 3 days with the UV should be it, but i have been wrong before lol .... i guess we will see ..... but i figure if a 18wtt uv can clear a 250g+ pond outside in the baking sun, this has got to do the trick in my room! :splitspin

By the way the UV i got is amazing, submersible with a built in power head, UV light and mechanical filtration (all-in-one) unit ...

I got it on here from a member selling it, just post in the WTB section saying you need a small UV i think some other people may have some they want to get rid of ...

The one I got is the JBJ Submariner Submerisble UV-C .... check out fosters for a spec sheet on it ...

Other good reviews i heard of are on the turbo twists ... but they are more $$

Good luck and i'll keep this thread updated until its 100% again! Hopefully sooner rather than later!

I don't use UV on my reef, but I do run a Turbo Twist on my 150g Loach tank and I like it a lot.

Agreed..the Turbo Twist UV's are great. The design makes a huge difference. I use a 9 w Turbo twist on my pond..almost 2000g..and it keeps it clean..go figure!

Chris.. make sure you wipe off the glass sleeve..maybe over the weekend as it will pick up x amount of crud from the water. Cleaning it will make it easier for it to do it's job ;)

Big News!!! Update !!!

OK BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its been about a month/half to this day...
Had a orange firefish jump, than live, than perish due to the less food i was feeding and competition to eat from my others ....

Nemo weeks later decided to jump, had him halfway to the porcelain god when my GF told me she thought he was still alive ... (Boy was she right)
To this day he is 100% alive and well and eating .... :shhh:

And i am big man so i'll admit this time around Algone did nothing for me....:irked: but the phos-reactor that most thought i would indefinitely need did help but not like the UV ... (in just 2.5 days) .... Here is the way it went down

3 weeks ago - Hooked up Phos-reactor
50% Water change and carbon change, & cleaning of everything else
1 week ago - Noticed rocks were visible again (not by much though)
Also notice cleanup crew basically eliminated all hair algae from everything possible in my tank (it covered my powerheads, back wall etc...)

Bought UV Wednesday Night
Hooked Up UV 10PM -
Thursday Afternoon 60% Better ....

FRIDAY MORNING 95% Clear (the 5% could just be my class is dirty at this point!!!!)

:birthday: :birthday: :birthday: :birthday: :birthday: :birthday: :birthday:

UV do exactly what my issue was and I can't believe I didn't run one sooner...They kill free floating algae/bacteria, in my case the stuff that creates green water ...

Will post pics as soon as i can get my tank somewhat more organize since alot of corals (that still lived) fell behind the rocks ...

Very happy to hear about the 95% clear Chris :)
but...sorry to bring this up...the UV light worked great to get rid of the symptom...but that algae came from somewhere...so your options are continue to run it full time and continue to change out the Phosban every couple of weeks (minimum)..as whatever was feeding the algae may well still be in the tank (rock? sand?), or shut it off and see what happens...
I'd vote to leave it on :)
Turn it off in a couple of months & see if it stays clear...

But mostly for now..I'm really happy for ya! :)
Looking forward to seeing the pics!!

Here is a quick little video to show that the tank is doing well at this point ...
Not planning on adding anything to the tank for awhile, (except for weekly water changes and maintainace ) ...

Thanks to all who have helped with suggestions/comments .... Hopefully the worst is over and i can move on to maintain a nice nano reef .... Wish me luck
