J, the wall was open with seconds of them seeing the "glow" behind it.

It could have spread to the second floor, but since there are fire stops in older houses, it, well, stopped and they were able to contain it locally -

Kathy, yeah, glad we decided to have a Wii blowing competition with my 5yr old son. He was bummed as he was bowling 184 in the 9th frame

The Fire Chief said it's a chicken egg thing - the wire started the fire in the wall, but there is speculation that the heat from the fireplace (or lose or missing mortar inside the firebox) that comprimised the wire. Either way, the fire is deemed electrical in nature and gladly covered by the insurance. Another good thing (and these things never cross the mind of the innocent), was that I was release of any wrong-doing. I was like WHAT? Seriously, though - after thinking at length about it, peopl are having a nard time paying their mortgage and who know what they'd be willing to do to avoid foreclosure.

Good that everyone made it out well.
Just pick up the peices and put things back into place.
Things will work out for you and you family.
You also have friends on MR that will be there if you need it.

Just think, it could have been worse.
Thankfully it wasnt.

I've spoken to Jim a few times today. The one thing I can readily say is that he is the man you want in case of an emergency. From the beginning he immediately took charge of getting the family car started for warmth and to remove everyone from harms way.

He still had a bit of time to reassess the situation and begin an attempt to extinguish the fire. Not something I'd recommend to everyone, but he had his head on straight and probably saved further damage with his calm, cool, and collected efforts to save the rest of the house. BTW, for those of you that don't know, all his bedrooms, kids included are DIRECTLY above that fireplace. Any further spreading of that fire most certainly would have ended in a tragedy that would be unrepairable. Thank god for Jim and Joan's organized, collective efforts to save family first and still be able to save the home from more extensive damages.

Jim and Joan, you both deserve that emotional release from the thoughts of what COULD have occurred more than you give yourselves credit for. Take those moments and release them. It'll help. Take it from one who knows.

You know I'd be there in a NY freakin' minute bro. You've been on my mind and in my heart and prayers ALL DAMN DAY. I'm thanking god and saying prayers for saving my buddy and his family.

Now go out to a nice 5 star restaurant and chow down. Then hit that 5 star hotel and get your asses pampered.

Talk later,
Russ

Jim,

Glad to here everything is OK and everyone is OK as well. I was in a similar situation at my sisters house a couple summers back, entire back of the house on the outside was gone, the back deck, and the first floor. Not a fun situation to be a part of, thank g-d me and my dad were awake or we would have all been sound asleep :(.

Again I'm glad to hear that all is well :).
