I agree, but I will add testing for PO4 to the list for what to test for in a new bucket of salt. hey you never know...

I might be switching from IO due to the low amounts of MG that were in this present bucket. It was below 1100, by the time I buffered it up to 1300 with ESV MG it would have cost less to buy one of the balanced reef salts :arg:
I like how the Red Sea Pro is looking, it got some good comments in Nate's tropic marin thread.

Low MG. That's no good. Better than high po4 imo, but still...
I guess I'll be ordering some IO, Reef crystals, and Red Sea pro and experiment. I'm surprised there isn't more analysis done on this already.

Nate, there has been analysis done over the years and all of it has been inconclusive for a variety of reasons. I have used IO pretty much exclusively for 15 years, through all of their formula changes etc. and have not had any problems. I have never checked the salt directly for anything either, nor do I intend to unless there are NOTICEABLE indications that affect the well being of my tank's inhabitants. IMO too much testing will drive you crazy and not yield much in the way of a healthier system, thus lessening the enjoyment of the hobby... unless of course you enjoy all the testing and that's a completely different story:)

Nates a more compulsive tester than I am

I do think it's important to test, I don't always do it. I've started making larger water changes, about 50G's, so I feel better knowing that the new water matches the old water in all the important levels. If one level is off that could create problems for me.

Randy,

If you dont mind me asking, where are you getting the bulk di from? Was it from Resindepot as well. If any one is willing to split some I would be interested. I'm just not sure how much I would need. According to the website:

"1 ft3 (one cubic foot) bags can make roughly 30 to 35 refillable cartridges in a
10 inch refillable filter shell."

BC,

Do you know if that means there are 3 bags? How was it shipped to you in the past? I guess how easy would it be to split up the order?

OK, last question. How do you store it so that it last longer and doesn't expire as fast?

any open bags of resin need to be kept in air tight containers.

I used one of those jars with the lid that snaps closed with a rubber seal between the top and the jar. it's the best thing I had in the house.

Vance,
Yes that is the site. It comes as 1 huge box with the resin inside double extra thick plastic bags. It is a lot of resin!!!! I make up water for 4 + systems so I use quite a bit, but for the average hobbyist, I would suggest splitting it up as it does have somewhat of a limited shelf life. I keep it in the double bags, twist tied and place the whole package in a resealable salt bucket. ( I need 2 for the 3ft lot). Keeping it moist is very important.

My guess would be a package that is 12"x12"x12". I'm just not sure how fast I would use it all. If 1 refill is good for about 200 gallons and we split the whole thing in half (about 15 refills) then thats 3000 gallons. I use less than 200 gal per month. Would the resin last over a year if stored properly?

The last batch I bought I sat on the couch and filled a refillable DI cartridge. beer in one hand, cartridge in the other. I filled the cartridge, then dumped it in a ziplock. I put 2-3 ziplocks in a large ziplock and put them away. I got 40 refills, but I didn't pack them too tightly. You're supposed to fill the cartridge and then tamp it down. I only pushed it down with my hand.
