So wait, if flow is a factor, wouldn't bypassing the membrane increase the flow thru the DI unit? I mean right now it's pretty slow due to the waste water being diverted, but everything running thru the DI chanber will quicken the pace, yes?

I'm interested in knowing how quickly your DI resin saturates NYC residents.

The point I was making about flow is that there needs to be enough contact time between the resin and the water passing through it to remove impurities efficiently. So you can make up something like 35-40 g. per hour as opposed to say 80g.per hour. The former of which is still a far cry from 40- 50 g. per DAY with the RO unit.

For me, in my situation ( I use a ton of water--major hassle and I crank through lots of sediment and carbon filters and I use enough DI resin to make it reasonable to buy in very large quantities, my systems are in my office and floods have far reaching implications, and I can take advantage of low TDS NYC water) I can narrow the cost gap to MY satisfaction when offset with the piece of mind and ease of use it brings me.

I wish I could go "RO Free" My tap is in the 600s. With all new filters and membrane my tds only gets down to 4-6ppm. One canister of DI lasts me about 100 gallons.

Looks like NYC water is $2.02 per 748 gallons + 159% sewer and whatever other gov't surcharges they add.

Section 1. Metered Water Rates

A. The charge for water measured by meter is $2.02 per one hundred cubic feet provided. One hundred cubic feet is approximately seven hundred forty-eight gallons.

so thats $5.23 for 748 gallons after the charges?

that comes out to about $6.99 for 1000gallons

the fun continues,

after changing about 90 gallons with pure DI water I took a po4 reading today. I was all excited to see a nice low number, something like .02. I waited the 3 minutes as the time ticked down on the hanna meter and saw a .17 come up :arg:

I was in disbelief, I have another 50 gallons of mixed DI saltwater ready to go that I so carefully balanced the mg, ca and alk. I tested that to see what the po4 was, .14

I have not tested the out put of the DI water from the filter yet, my main concern was getting the po4 out of my new "fresh" water. I added two tlf reactors, one with some fauna marin po4 remover, and another with carbon. the carbon is to try to remove all the brown crap that the po4 remover put into the water :headache:

the TDS meter is reading .01 now. I ordered a new RO membrane and more DI resin.
I think I should order a few more buckets of salt as well. It's going to take many gallons to get that po4 out of the system. grrr.

good question, I tested the DI output last night, it was at .06, where the rest of the po4 came from in my mixing container I don't know, it has me  maybe the salt?

one thing to note is this was DI resin I got back in april, it might have expired and be letting more PO4 through. It does have me worried.
when I get the new DI resin I'll do the same tests and see what's up.

I should test the PO4 of the tap water and see how much is being pulled out by the DI resin

That's what I need to buy, phosphate test kit. Thanks for reminding me.

Actually, I was pretty astounded that the TDS meter settled in at 31 in
