I am currently treating my 55 with it. I am only on my second dose. Over the last few days, it seems like there are less spots at night and more in the morning.

That often happens with ich, as it is part of its life cycle, and prolly has nothing to do with the medication :D.

Agreed. Then they come back with a vengance.

Dawn, give it a shot and let us know how it works out for you. From what I can gather, some people say it works, some people say it does not, and some people report some bad consequences from using this product. It seems like a toss up to me. With due respect, I think you want it to work and are dismissing data and arguments against the product.

I just finished a 2 plus week dosing of kick-ich on my 650 gallon reef tank. I've got LPS, SPS, Magnificent Anemone, Shrimp, Clams, Snails, Fish, etc. My powder blue and my hippo tang came down with it, and I dosed Kick-Ich every other day for 2+ weeks. The ich is mostly gone, but did keep coming back during the period.

None of the other items in the tank were effected by Kick-ich.

The ich took my royal gramma and a little green banded goby, but not the hippo or the powder blue tang. They slowly got better (i.e. fewer and fewer spots over the 2-3 weeks). My guesstimate on why is because of the following:

1) Kick-ich probably irritates ich, but doesn't really keep it from its reproductive cycle. I'd think of it as an ich pest, reducing its effectiveness.
2) My 6-line wrasse loves to pick the ich parasites off the tangs, and I think that the combination of the removal of the parasites with the kick-ich helped keep the fish from succumbing.

I guess I'd recommend a 6-line in your tank first and foremost, and then see if any ich picks up. Kick-ich, in my opinion, likely only helps if the fish is healthy enough to fight off the infection.

Hope this helps.

I don't know who brought the ich in, as no one had visible signs of ich when they went in. I'm not a quarantine tank person (mainly because I haven't set one up yet), and I paid for my mistake with the ich. Could have been any of the fish. The reality of the parasite is that it could come in with a few drops of LFS water, or on a fish that's immune to it, etc.

There is no product that I've ever seen to prevent or stop ich beside QT, copper, hypo. If there was a TRUE product that killed it, they would be extremely rich and they would know it :). I would invest in their stock.

To me, the following is just as better if you don't plan on pulling the fish to QT. Feed with garlic and provide a very stress free enviroment. The larger the tank the better change it has to get better. I would also feed several times a day so they can get the energy to fight the parasite.

There is also only conjecture as to garlic doing anything for ich. :D It is possible that it might do something, but this is far from being shown. I have seen ich go away with garlic soaked food and I have seen it go away with just plain old food. I think it has more to do with giving the fish enough food to boost its own immune system rather than anything to do with the garlic.

The reasoning behind ich being treatable by so many things is post hoc ergo proptor hoc - it happened after, so was caused by. I fed my fish garlic, ginger, cornflakes (changed my light bulbs, did a water change, rearranged my rock, etc) and the ich went away, so its going away must have been caused by what I fed.

That said keep us posted. :D

True Garlic is speculative at the best but it is known for it's properties. However it can't hurt. Plus it is super cheap :)
I still say a stress free or QT or hypo or copper is the only TRUE proven method.

I guess thats my point - we don't know if it works and there are real questions as to the possibility of it working through ingestion for fish. Since we don't know, and it costs money (garlic extreme is not cheap), and people report the same success failure rates with or without it I have a real hard time justifying its use.

I totally understand wanting to use it because if makes us feel like we are doing something. It turned out for me that paying the same attention to feeding without the garlic as I did when using the garlic got me to feed more and make sure the fish with ich was eating enough.

There are lots of additives that we could add to our tanks that 'don't hurt', but is it really worth adding them? Doesn't seem like it to me because it seems like a way to just spend money I would rather save or spend on animals.

Good discussion guys! Thanks!

If you make your own fish food (I use a fresh seafood mix from my store) you can add fresh whole garlic cloves to the blender. The fish love it and the only complaints I have heard are from the scarlett hermits...

"Man those bluelegged hermys need some tic-tacs or mentos! "

Ick is present for the most part in every fish in the hobby ( fresh and salt).
It isnt somthing that is brought in persay. It is cause by stress.
When they stress it causes them to sluff off thier slime coat and makes them vulnerable to other diseases as well. Think of ick as kanchor sores.
treat the break out solve the stress problem no more breakouts.
There are MANY articles that support this. I am just taking information from those articles.

There is much disagreement to the idea that ich is always present in tanks, and it is possible to have an ich free tank. :D

I know, but if stress causes it then where does it come from if you have a uv filter and an out break? ( like I did on my FOWLR) :)
