Jenn,

BTW we're not talking about fishing for food, so try not to spin the topic. We are discussing the unethical treatment of ornamental fish by PetCo and by the industry in general. It's funny how you don't even address the huge number of fish killed by the trade.
Actually, we are talking about the food trade, Their are 83 million people to feed in the Philippines .......and 68% of each one of these people diet consists of fish. Its actually much easyer to collect food fish with cyanide then to collect pet fish . You can over cyanide and kill the food fish and still sell them . Not so with pet fish .....There is not really that much pet fish cyanide collection taking place. The last test results found 8% in 1997 18% in 98 and 29% in 2000 . Thats with out MAC and other anti Cyanide groups observing and watching over the reefs as is the case today in 2004. The food food export industry is the main user of cyanide in PI.Second is the local use of cyanide to feed the 83 million locals................. Fish food is a multi billion dollar industry for the Philippines. The Aquarium industry currently only ships out about 4 million fish per year from PI........ and keep in mind that the average price per fish FOB is less then one dollar. Thats works out to about a two to three million dollar industry. Or about one 50th that of the live food fish and grouper exports. The bribes are because of the food fish , not the tiny pet trade.

http://www.icriforum.org/docs/indonesian_cr.pdf and most importantly.... http://cgi.didit.force9.co.uk/marksfish ... arine5.htm The last link shows how important the concentration of cyande used in the collection of fish is . Fishing for food fish involves using much more cyanide per fish. The food fish target fish are for the most part larger and can still be used if overstunned .......dead fish are still able to be sold . The amount and concentration of cyanide used in the collection of aquarium fish is very tiny . Thats the only way collectors can collect the fish alive . The food fish industry is so large and important to the Philippino people that the reefs in the region dont stand a chance. This industry needs to get out of PI and stop the blame game. Ninty percent of the cyanide damage is from the food fishermen ....not pet fish collectors .

While food fishing is a problem, it's not what we started discussing.

I simply mentioned that if the MO trade is shut down, that the fishers currently fishing for MO fish, may likely switch to food fishing, which is also destructive... and the thread got hijacked.

Any updates on the superstore in question and how things are looking this week?

I have not been there since the G.O., but if you like I'll stop by there and snap some photos.

Just realized that myself when I used a different browser. Oh well, it helped. Thank you!

I will stick with the small shops. As a former small art and craft shop owner done in by WalMart selling simular but shodier materials at well below my costs, I prefer to stay away from the superstores. The knowledge and service available with the small retailer can not be matched by these large impersonel wharehouses.

I love my LFS....they've got *way* more variety than Petco's in our area and the fish are def. in better shape (never seen 1 dead/sick fish in any of their tanks)
Hell, I'm actually thinking of applying there PT!

Petco does have cheaper prices, but at the risk of diseased/starving fish.
So I save some $$, if the fish dies I haven't saved a thing....

The pics of the new petco look nice. I have however, been able to get pre-mixed RO-DI saltwater at my LFS from some time. The owner put it in as soon as the Marine Fish became more of a money-maker than FW. They have only added small section for corals, anemones, and such. Still, I get good advice and nice service when I go in. I have to wait for quite a while in the small Petco near me.

as most of you state that the conditions of fish are poor at your neighborhood petco what you dont see is that is how most of theyre fish are received from their wholesalers. Im in no way defending them but the industry itself is where the problem stems from. Ive been to these wholesalers and if you think the conditions at petco are brutal try a holding area 4inx4in for an angel/trigger/tang. you cannot condemn without knowing everything that goes on.

the 'industry', or the wholesalers specific to petco ?

big difference

I went to my local Petco today and found out that they are starting to sell saltwater fish. I was appalled at the condition of the tanks and the fish. Ich was everywhere and just about everything was either dieing or already dead. They had a long nose butterfly as well as tangs and clowns just trying to stay afloat. Several fish were totally vertical in the water trying to get their mouth out in the air and others were floating upside down.

I don't understand why large retailers think it is a good (or even profitable) plan to sell saltwater when they only hire kids to take care of them. If they treated the dogs and cats like they do the fish then they would probably be out of business.

Fish lovers...ban together !!!
