Actually, we are talking about the food trade, Their are 83 million people to feed in the Philippines .......and 68% of each one of these people diet consists of fish. Its actually much easyer to collect food fish with cyanide then to collect pet fish . You can over cyanide and kill the food fish and still sell them . Not so with pet fish .....There is not really that much pet fish cyanide collection taking place. The last test results found 8% in 1997 18% in 98 and 29% in 2000 . Thats with out MAC and other anti Cyanide groups observing and watching over the reefs as is the case today in 2004. The food food export industry is the main user of cyanide in PI.Second is the local use of cyanide to feed the 83 million locals................. Fish food is a multi billion dollar industry for the Philippines. The Aquarium industry currently only ships out about 4 million fish per year from PI........ and keep in mind that the average price per fish FOB is less then one dollar. Thats works out to about a two to three million dollar industry. Or about one 50th that of the live food fish and grouper exports. The bribes are because of the food fish , not the tiny pet trade.Money Pit":2d84iivx said:Jenn,
BTW we're not talking about fishing for food, so try not to spin the topic. We are discussing the unethical treatment of ornamental fish by PetCo and by the industry in general. It's funny how you don't even address the huge number of fish killed by the trade.
