It's that name calling, immature behavior that really gets me. A long discussion about silliness is still a silly conversation. It's like those threads stimulate a feeding frenzy (pun intended). Why not ignore troublemakers? That used to work. Also, regarding selling, the problem is less about the amount of selling activity on the site and more about the lack of interest in solid, relevant topics. Even threads that begin positively tend to devolve into a ti-t for tat. We would all do well to remember who we are (www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/view.php?pg=who_we_are). Thank you for posting cmantis. I agree with Randy - re-read before posting. You'd be surprised how well you could clean up your own mess.

I hope it can get back to the way it was 5 years ago. What I think MR should do is a minimum of 50 posts to sell or buy, if after your first one hundred posts you are a troll or start to be a nuisance you get a time out where u can't post for 30 days. If it happens again 60 days and after the 3rd time your banned. For any older members starting to be a interruption on MR a 5 day ban from posting next of fence a month and after that 3 months 4th time a ban. Maybe this will keep the nonsense off the boards. People know they can pretty much say and do a thing they want with almost no consequence

Sounds like a good start DUKE you might want to add
if a member verbally threatens another they then get banned.

So you don't create a situation were the person they threatened feels the need to lie in wait util someday when the other least expects it ,
sees them at a swap or LFS to pay them back.

The point is to stop the threatening tones or I think the kids call it computer muscles.

Hey maybe a real photo of each member as a Avitar just so you can get a idea of who your talking to?
Dont know how you would enforce this but its a thought.

Looking forward to a needed improvement and maybe getting some of the old guys back to contributing.

I have a love hate relationship with MR. I would love to hate it at times, but I realize that I get upset only because its the place I come back to often. Like another poster mentioned, its like going back to the old neighborhood. Sure I frequent other forums, but I always come back to MR to see how things are going. Sure sometimes someone piss me off or send me a PM because they thought I was rude (go figure). Sure some members irritate me...but I've since add them to the block/ignore list.
With that said, I truly like the way MR is moderated. Its a relaxed and forgiving atmosphere compared to other sites.
In fact, a thread like this, although it is a call for improvement or suggestions for improvements, will likely get deleted on other sites. So with this type of freedom, we should consider ourselves very fortunate.
Now, I'm not saying to leave things the way they are, I am a firm believer that policies needs to be reviewed regularly and that rules can be updated to better serve the community. Just keep in mind that the very basic rule or freedom that allows us to have such a discussion, also allows others to take advantage.

I for one have called a spade a spade...the mods know who I am, and I don't care less, people have there own thoughts and most never met one another but someone says hes a **** or hes a great guy and people run with it... This site and many others u all think u know everything and most dont know anything , its only what they read or hear...ITS A HOBBY !!!! take it as that..
The thing that bugs the HELL out me is the store bashing !!! I for one had a store and this site didn't help it one bit..and I know for a FACT there was another store on here with many names bashing away, and hiring people to destroy the livestock..Im glad im out of the bis and NEVER will go back,and u all can see why,,Just look at all the BS u people cause the owners......Try opening a real store and tell me how good u do. Bet ya 99% will be out in 3 months...And its not the same as ur one fish tank in ur mothers apartment , that u have 0 overhead and no idea of what ur doing...My rant is done ...u guys can continue ..

there are a lot of good points in this thread. the market place is not a bad place ive bought 90% of my stuff there its who you by from. people are always gonna take advantage of someone else (flipping) but you try to help people out and sometimes you get screwed **** happens. ive meet a lot of great people,traded/bought a lot of coral , and im always learning here. you gotta take the good with the bad. the sad part is when someone makes a good/ interesting thread it always gets of topic and I have a bad temper so I wont say ive never been insulted and retaliated here but im starting to see you gotta just let it go. you can try to point out the trolls/flakers but it wont change anything. people don't change so ignore em and find those people out there that are here with good intention. I think mr is a good community we just have some bad mixed in it, just like the rest of the world.

I'm with the majority of you guys unfortunately! However I have yet to meet quite a few of you. We should set up some meet ups aside from the swap (can't give up football even for a swap). There are quite a few of us who are good people dedicated to the hobby and helping each other. Given the sad state of most LFS and the lack of inventory we need to form a more solid community focused on helping each other rather than turning a profit.

I've always thought that the loud mouths are just angry people with negative attitudes and 99% of the time have very little knowledge regarding our hobby and are just jealous others tanks looks so great while there's looks like a forest with nothing but green hair algae.
It is also easy to tough talk through a computer but really what is the reason for tough talk? We're all here to share experiences and stories related to a hobby that we really enjoy. Why anyone would take something enjoyable and turn it into some BS bashing is obviously just an idiot and I don't have time for idiots! I also have to say that I have sold and bought through this forum many times. I guess I have been lucky but in Every interaction I have had the people I have met through this forum have always been awesome to deal with and are always quick to lend a hand or a piece of equipment if necessary and love to just talk reef!
Definitely a community of good East Coast Reefers in here!

I apologize if I come across as rude, but I have low tolerance for stupidity,,actually for people treating me or a fellow reefer as a sucker,,we all know these posters, grab a freebie or whatever and you see it for sale at ten times the price the next week. I've seen a lot of other people bombing sale posts with no intention to buy anything all they do is deter a potential legitimate deal. Case in point, a dude from idaho or whatever has 2 posts and both of them bash a vendor that is established on this site, I mean i don't know them, but most of ya'll probably do. I like this site. Im on it a lot and love the tank threads, and truthfully I like the trolls sometimes too. You gotta be thick skinned to be on this site I guess because 90% of us have probably fought 1 of our friends then threw back a beer together an hour later.

This site main point is a vast population of reefers in the tristate. Unfortunately, crossing bridges tolls etc plays a role and someone to play host for meetups. 1 great thing about njreefers is their constant meets and greets.

Their too tight knit and a popularity contest goes on there. More of a conservationist group as well. They only allow paid members into their marketplace. I was a previous member but that turned me off and I found MR.

I would try hosting a quarterly meet in different boroughs. Again the main problem is allowing strangers into tour home and New Yorker strangers at that. Hard to accomplish a comraderie or community when there will be trust issues.

I forget the exact guy who posted a thread about a guy he sold something to previously came back and stole things out his backyard not too long ago. I would hate to see a horror story unfold.
