The other wrasses have the tendency to jump. I wanted a christmas wrasse, but i don't want a cover on my tank, plus my sand bed is not deep enough.
I also don't have a huge tank either (46 gallon) so the other wrasses might be a bit too big for my tank.

Ah.....46 gal is not that bad.
Thought you had a smaller tank.

The point we're trying to make is that they are not "community" fish, so you'll have to plan out your other live stock / corals around these 2 fish.
Not worth it in my opinion.

My six line wrasse was cute at first, now he is evil and has killed every wrasse in the tank. I have angels and tangs in there with him, but he won't mess with them because they are about 25 times bigger then him, but if I try to put another wrasse or a small fish like a cleaner wrasse, goby, algae blenny, etc he will try to kill it. There are alot of nicer looking wrasses and peaceful ones out there. It is not worth it for a $15 fish. I learned to be picky and now I have to deal with what I have, but in future purchases I will be choosy as to what goes in my tanks...

You could have any of the fairy/flasher wrasses in your tank. You should cover your tank anyway - any fish can jump. My ex-boyfriend lost a clownfish because it jumped. I remember someone having a royal gramma that jumped. covering your tank will be the best thing you ever did.

Great advice; the only fish I haven't had as a jumper yet are tangs. Search for the thread by KathyC on the DIY cover she built, well worth it, or enclose your canopy.

On the fish when I added the flame angel my coral beauty is the only one who cared, a day or 2 later no issues. A few months later added tri-color and high-fin fairy wrasse and no one seemed to care they were in there. This is in my 180 (LPS/softy only) so there is plenty of room for everyone to play nice, I wouldn't try it anything smaller than a 6' wide tank.

I have a six line and flame angel and they get along great. I added the six line first, the angel last. My six line has never shown aggression toward any other fish, I'm curious how so many people say theirs are terrors. As for zoas, my flame angel has been a model citizen, never touching a single zoa. And I have a lot of zoas. But when I started collecting micros, he picked at and ate every one, a couple hundred bucks worth. I'm setting up a fish trap now...

im actually happy the way my 6 line is being towards tankmakes... he established his dominance.. and shows fish who's boss but he only does that once when i put in something new .. i juss feed the fish when i add something new to distract them.. i had 3 sixlines .. and i'll tell you they're all different .. so it's going to be hit or miss

Well for what i'm reading, it's deffinately a hit or miss, especially with the Six Line. Most of the fish i like are too big for my tank, so i really don't want to be stuck with fish that i don't like. The flame angel seems the least of my problems now, when i thought he was going to be the first one. As far as the Six Line is concerned, i guess we will have to see what happens. Joe (jw10604) has a Six Line that he's had for about 2 years, he got it from nyaquatic and it has been a model citizen, and considering all the fish he's got, mine shoudl feel even better in my tank, since there will be only about 5-6 fish. Now, some people on other sites have suggested to quarantine both of them at the same time, would that help?

My plan was to get the six line first, quarantine him for 2 weeks and then place it in my tank with some more rock that i have curing. Then as soon as he's in the tank, get the flame angel and quarantine him for 2 weeks also, and then add him in the tank.

The other plan would be to get them both at the same time, quarantine them together, and introduce them in the tank at the same time along with the new rock. What you guys think would be the best move?

i have lost $400 in trying to have other wrasse's in my tank due to having a 6 line that chased beat and nipped or stressed them to death, as other's have said why waste the money on a chance for a so so looking fish when you can have a fairy or other wrasse, as for the angel you tank hasnt really been set up that long has it ? angels need well established tank's. and any info you read from a online vendor isnt completely correct, i would take the advise of people with real experiance with them. as for having to have your tank covered, well i have had wrasse's for a year and a half { im still new to the hobby } and never covered my tanks and never had one jump. been lucky i guess. why get fish that will limit what you can have in your tank ? if you want i have a lubbock you can have, been with me for a year now, got a pair from same area so the other has to go

Flame angel of mine starts fights with almost all my other fish and he nips at Xenias to the point of killing the coral. It did not bother my other corals. The flame also like to beat on other fishes, He once used his gill cover hook to cut a 0.5" wound on my bullet gobie. My flame was introduced later than other fishes. He is beautiful, but it is way too aggressive. I introduced a six line about 3 weeks ago, he gets picked on a little, but handling himself rather well. He has not shown aggressions to anything yet.

it seems like you're dead set on getting these two fish.

i'd recommend introducing the six-line first and then the angel.

Well, i'm not dead set on getting these two. I AM getting the flame angel for sure, and i guess most likely the Six Line wrasse will end up in my tank. The thing is that there's not that many fish out there that either suit my wants or that i can keep. I love tangs, but my tank is too small. Other angels except the flame angel get too big.
My other options were either a blue/green chromis, maybe another pair of clowns, but as you can tell, there aren't many options out there.
Basically i'm looking for a fish that will roam around the whole aquarium, since the clowns i have just roam around one area, and the cardinal, well, it depends on the day. I also want a vivid colored fish.
I know that the flame angel might nip at corals, especially zoas, but i only have one small colony of zoas, so i'm not too concerned about it. I also doubt that the flame angel will get nasty with my clowns and cardinal.
So i guess, since i'm set on the flame angel, all i have to figure out now is do i want the six line or do i want another fish.
Any help will be more than welcome!!

People have stated their experience and opinions with either fish including me, however bottom line is, what ever makes you happy. It is your tank, money, etc and your the one that has to be happy. If you don't try, you will never know...

I can't wait to get my Six line out Not only will he bully any new introduction but he goes after my peppermint shrimps.. He will be taken out of my tank... as far as an angel ... after you set up your tank aquascaping, and gluing the last thing you want to do is damage some of that. The Flame angel does nip if your not keeping up with his appetite... A similar fish is the Flame Hawk.

Oriol - I also agree with what most everyone else has said about the 6 line. You hadn't mentioned the 6 line to me before and I'm surprised you seem so hell-bent on getting one. They are a rather ho-hum looking fish..IMO.
If you can't live without one - then get a Cryptic 6 line. They are very small and stay that way. The fish max's out at about 1- 1 1/4" and they are very docile. It also won't preclude you from getting any other wrasse.

As we talked about, you have a 50/50 chance of getting an angel that nips. Don't forget they can also be aggressive. Unfortunately, aggressive fish STRESS out other fish, and in a tank that is not large (over about 120g)..the stress level is more pronounced. High stress does cause problems in tanks..one of them being ich...
Since you are going to wait til after your trip to Spain, how about I bring some fish books when I come to visit when you're back home, and we can look at some other fish you may not yet know exist. :)

I'm learning, i still have at least a month before i get the first fish, so i decided to start this thread a bit earlier to get other people's opinion on this, don't you think that if i was set on getting these two, they would be in the tank by now already?
I've done a lot more research on the flame angel than any other fish, and during the research, i never came across anyone that said that the flame would harrass clownfish or a blue streak cardinal. Some people did mention that the flame might nip at some corals, but a couple tanks i have seen with flame angels in them, they have been good. From these tanks, that's where the idea of the six line got into my head. A couple of them had the six line and had no complaints other than the six line being a model citizen. I liked their colors and movement, and i started liking the fish, but from all the reading here, i guess it might be a bad fish to add. I guess i will keep looking for another fish...

Ok, so it's been a while since i posted in this thread, and while i was on the plain to spain today, i took the time to read a book Kathy gave me, "The Conscentious Marine Aquarist" and took all the advice that you guys gave me in here, and i will pass on the Wrasse. I didn't know that they were going to be so fiesty and a pain in the tank, but i know i want a wrasse because of their colors and their movements and everything. I didn't want to cover the tank, but it seems that doing that will be the wisest choice. I looked at the chapter they had on wrasses in the book, and i also did some research online, and i came across a few wrasses that i like. I know some of them are not reef safe, others have to be monitored, and that there are others that you have to be careful with if you have any kind of invertebrate in your tank. So here's the list of the wrasses that for a reason or another i liked, and i hope that with everyone's opinion and insight, i can get the best fish for my needs.
a.Christmas Wrasse (not reef safe?)
b.Lunare Wrasse
c.Orange Collar Wrasse
d.Red Coris Wrasse
e.Yellow Wrasse
f.Barred Thicklip Wrasse
g.Bluehead Wrasse
h.Dusky Wrasse
I'm set on the flame, i know some of you have suggested against getting it, but it's the first fish i wanted in my tank, and i was smart enough not to get it back then, but i feel like now i can finally have it in my tank. It will be the last fish i add there!
