Need to vent right now,

I bought two heniochus butterfiles ($35 each) from reef fantasy in staten island about 2 weeks ago

They died a week and a half in, from ich they were carrying (kris noticed the spots 2 days after I got them, i thought I saw something at the store but Im nearsighted)

MY WHOLE FISHSTOCK NOW HAS THE WORST CASE OF ICK ive ever seen, my starkii damsel ($50) died 3 days ago, and my little hippo is absolutely full of this ****.

:irked::irked::irked:

ive just lost $120 in fish and im scared all will suffer the same fate, I already tried to catch the fish to QT, Cant grab not a one! Ive never had this happen from any other store..ever.
The owner is a nice guy, and their corals are priced very reasonably (i bought an acro) but as honest feedback I doubt Ill ever buy another fish there again.

Im so pissed!
from now on QT, thats it

Kris, can it catch hippo tangsor mystery wrasses???

Ive been feeding a lot of garlic, but it doesnt seem to have any lasting effect, do i have to put food inside of the soda bottle?

anybody have any anecdotal reef friendly remedies?

Reefman, so did I bro, so did I

The best remedy is to take the infected fish out ot the tank and treat them in a QT tank with copper and hyposalinity.

Is'nt garlic only good for building up the immunity, not to rid a fish of anything? Thats how I understood it. Can I ask a question without anyone getting mad? If you thought it might have had Ich in the store, why did you still buy them? I don't buy anything if I think it's questionable anymore, I learned my lesson years ago on this. It was learned the hard way of course!

srry to hear that DZRL .
try to use a UV sterilizer ,it will kill any free floating ICH thats in the water colum (if you cant catch the fish that is ) i have one if you need to use it.

I wouldnt use anything in a reef tank ,aside from Garlic which i dont think will kill theich ,only may help the fish fight some off

I had the same problem. During the day the fish look fine but in the morning they are covered. I have a UV sterilizer new bulb. I had not fish in my tank for over a month. I put in a new kole tang and bang ich in the morning. The ich will be in your tank forever. I have no clue how to get it out of the tank. I am taking the substrate out of the tank this weekend and putting in reef base sand.. While i have the water out of the tank I will be wiping the the tank down with paper towels and hoping the air kills the ich. Then I will be putting 80 percent new water in the tank.

a month isn't really enough for the ich cycle to rid, it all depends on the strand of ich some last along time dependin on the temp/sg of the tank.
u should hypo the fish for ATLEAST a month but doesnt mean its gonna be all gone, should try to wait out the wait alil longer mabe 6wks to 2months and it should be all gone it doesnt matter if u change 80% of the water the ich will still be there somewhere and if u buy fish from any fish store the chances of the fish a carrier is like 90% or more so its either u treat them before you put them in or atleast QT them for a month and a half or just throw them in with a couple of cleaner wrasses and cleaner strimp and prey they would keep the ich very very low that it wouldn't outbreak

lol...no worries man..I didnt see it to tell u the truth, it was very fine at that stage im guessing, I wasnt wearing my astigmatism lenses

The garlic the jury's out on that one, theres alot of people who swear n garlic as an immuno booster, not only preventatively but during an outbreak, I gave it a try but 3 fish down, and now ive got worries...what sucks is the aquascape is perfect, i really dont wanna mess it up damn!

Andres, sorry to hear this. If all your fish are showing signs (real bad, as you say) of ich, then removing them at this time would probably just stress them even more. Just make a bad outbreak an even harder case to treat.

I second Ronen's suggestion of getting a UV sterilizer on that tank asap. Also, a hyposalinity treatment could prove helpful.

Good luck,
Russ

1)get the uv from ronen if possible
2)try and catch as many fish as possible w/ the soda bottle trick
3)start feeding w/ garlic
4)i've also heard that in hospital tanks the light is kept on for very long periods of time if not always. problem is that @ night the fish will sleep and this allows the ick to take over. maybe you should keep your lights on longer?

Others here seem to think I am wrong on this ( ;) ), but it has NEVER failed me. Go out and buy yourself a pair of cleaner shrimp. Within two or three days it will clear up the problem. Dont be surprised if the ich returns, it will. (Part of the cycle) But they will control it.

Oh, ich is very common when adding new fish. It basically amounts to the common cold and is brought on my stress. I wouldn't blame the vendor unless they knew the fish were sick.
