Dis u ever put the Vegas on yet I'm thinking about getting a set for my 120 gallon but I am gling to be upgrading soon to a 300 gallon deep dimension which is 6 ft x36w x27 high .I'm wondering if I could get away with 3 vega units on the 300 gal

I installed two Vegas on my 120 gallon reef tank. Love them so far! I would say 3 Vegas are not enough for a 300 gallon tank. Hope this helps.

depends what coral you have but 3 is definatly underpowered for a reef (300g)(vega)

rule of thumb is 3watts per gallon even once you pull out the par meter you will be upset

Does anyone have LED's long enough to experience any growth with SPS.? Color and features seem to be great with regard to LED's, but I am a big fan of SPS and hesitant to go with an LED fixture. I at first was attracted to the Radion's, but then a friend told me to look at Orphek's Atlantik model (good coverage and par it seems). Came across this thread with the AI Vegas and I don't know who to trust/believe.

I teach science so to me PAR should dictate growth. The problem is the data I find. If you have a 24" tank do you really want the lights sitting on top of the water or do you want them raised up 8" to 10" to access the tank?

Just my $.02, tagging along...

There are TONS of people out there who have shown growth with LEDs. It's been proven time and time again. IMO, the non-money related issue with LEDs (at least the commercially available units and not DIY) has been matching the color of T5 and Halide systems. Although we are getting closer, we are still not there. Companies like AI and Ecotech need to look at adding the warm and neutral white LEDs (and violet) instead of relying on the cool whites. The Maxspect Razr has done so, and I've heard the colors are excellent with these fixtures (I have not seen them in person, yet).

You also have to remember.. With LEDs it's very difficult to measure PAR using a PAR meter. Estimates (even by companies that make the PAR meters) are up to a 30% discrepancy between actual values and readings.

On a final note; I have seen many people with water quality problems blame lighting for their coral growth and color issues. I think LEDs (and any new lighting type for that matter) are often getting blamed for lack of coral growth and color when it's really an alk, pH, or phosphate issue.
